hi Craig Derek on our site gets the manure for us. But if you have a car see if you can travel around some stables they normally give it away free if you can collect it in maybe a trailer.

I have a friend who lives at Grimesthorpe who is interested in talking to other ppl from her area about allotments/gardening, but at the moment she`s having problems registering. Would anyone in here also be interested in having a sort of s4 discussion group?

Many thanks scubz; I'm up and running at last.

Hi craigpugh. I'm at grimesthorpe working 2 allotments. This will be our fourth growing season and life doesn't get much better than eating your own veg, bugs and all, does it?

hooray, good to see a few more people in here. I was getting quite envious of the hag house hill allotments lot.

So, have you seen that at grimesthorpe there's a pklant sale in may. i'm gutted cos i'm away at a wedding in leicester that day.

I've had the allotment since three years i think, this will be the third summer, but last year was the first time we got to grow anything it took so long to tame it, it had been unused for 8 years previously so it was a bramble paradise.

I have just sowed parsnips for the first time, well excited about them.

Any ideas on how to stop plastic compost bins blowing all down my plot, they are empty at the minute.

Craig

Yes, knew about the sale, I am busy growing plants for it, what were you interested in? Sorry you can't make it though. Did you go last year?

We took on a bad plot too, 10-12 years empty, took two of us sept-aprl to clear and dig half. Brambles and willowherb on ours. + another 2 years to round up the stragelers which kept coming up from Austraila!

I've only just cracked the SF site so am going to have a look at the Hag house lot to see what they have happening. Which side of the city are they on?

Try laying your bins on their sides against a hedge and put a couple of bricks in them. Or just leave them at the other end of the plot till you need them. We have 8 in a variety of styles, all producing something, it keeps them in place. I love making compost!

well last year all my brassica seedlings went leggy and never got anywhere.

I wanted to try some unusual things- red/ black kale, red sprouts, coloured or romanscu caul;iflowers.

Arran- where is your plot then?

I have just started tackling the worlds largest and most dilapadtaed greenhouse, I am determined to salvage it.

The branbles on mine are still coming through from the other siede of the earth!

Ha! We managed cabbage shaped brassicas but the sprouts seemed to catch it too; not so much buttons as tiny spring cabbages growing out the sides of the stalks! Better luck this year.

Do be careful in your broken down green house wont you? Lets not have any accidents on the site.

We are down on the bottom left of the site, you do know us, I found out who your were on Sunday, Rob B told me. How about joining the allotment group on the site? The AGM is on the same day as the plant sale but you could just tell someone if you were interested. And do you know about the weekly coffee morning on Saturdays? 10.30-12. Fresh coffee and cake in the meeting room most weeks. Everyone welcome.

Another way to keep your compost bin in place is to sink the bottom into the soil a couple of inches and heap some soil round the outside a couple of inches deep too.

Have you bought the seeds for your plant wish list?

I think i have now sorted the runaway compost bins!

The greenhouse framework is more sound than i'd hoped for, so i will keep plodding gently and cautiously on with that.

BUT... the big secrtet seems to be where do people get their manure delivered from over here??? No-one is letting on. Someone must know, come on, confess!!

Hi Craig!

Not sure myself about manure .... will make enquiries for you.

Glad the GH is stable and the bins are sorted.

Hows the seed growing going? I am running out of window ledges fast.

Been asking around about manure. Not had much luck yet but will continue to hunt out phone numbers for you. We could do with some but it's getting late for this year.

There was a coment in the fed minutes last week about farmers not being aloud to store manure for as long. Some skip companies have been dropping it at allotment sites. We are going to look into it and see if we could have one. I will let you know. It would have to be stored for a few months though. A heap covered over with carpet or tarpaulin would do it.

At the risjk of coming over a very young victor meldrew, i dont ruddy believe it! we are very lucky at gromesthorpe, there has been some new deal for communities money invested in a massive heavy duty security fence and accompanying gate, this is a great advantage over other sites where its more or less open access on some sites.

So how infuruating that some people just cant be bothered padlocking the main gate behind them. I dont know could could be so thoughtless as to put the security of the rest of our plots at risk. I reckon you can bet it wont be any of the 8 or more plotholders who's sheds, greenhouses, hedges, fences etc etc were burnt out last summer in a run of arson attacks.

Despite the risk of this kind of damage, when i arrived today, the gate was left open, i shut it after me. My dog ran off, when i went chasing after, the gate was left open. I locked it. Whejn i left, the gate was... well, you get the picture.

hey, the water is still off. how am i supposed to plant ourt my seedlings. it's about the same cost to pay for water as it costs to pay for the actual plot. what a rip off. Someone on another thread said they've been chasing the allotment officer, and was told on 14th april that the water on grimesthorpe will be turned on 'tomorrow'- 15th, i was there yesterday and no sign.

Roe woods doesnt have water yet either apparently,. yet hag house and meersbrook have so obviously it is post code preferential treatment as per.
