Question : what will you do with your old banger if you have to pay a fee to get shut of it ?

Just pay to get rid of it - how much is it to get the scrap man to collect it anyway?

My car is 37 years old, I expect it will live another 37 years.

As I understand, before this war, the price of scrap metal was so low that the authorities were having to pay scrap dealers for the collection fees of dumped vehicles.

Wonder if this has something to do with it?

Maybe a lot of cars will get 'stolen' by someone and end up as burned out shells on common ground ...

Most scrappers have been charging to take them away for ages now.

If it comes to having to pay excessive charges, I would probably angle grind it down, and then go weigh it in. Making myself a bit of cash. Steel prices aren't too bad at the moment.

The interior, electrical items will of course be sold on ebay.

The idea of having to pay for someone to take my old car, then them sell the bits off as salvage and make more profit somehow rattles me.:mad:

You won't be able to grind it down and weigh it in, all car shells ect will have to be depolluted prior to taking it to the weigh bridge.

What you gonna do with all the liquids from it ?:confused:

Exactly the same as I do with them when they are serviced. Its only anti-freeze and oil. Oil goes off to the recycling centre down the road, anti-freeze has no choice but to go over the floor.

How can you depolllute a car shell? Its only steel :confused:

Can we have a new option, break it for parts?

well i had to pay for mine in sheff.

£20 he took it away, i was happy to pay that, and if he managed to get any money from it, fair play cos id of got nothing!

Well you should have rang around, as most take em for free.

I even had someone knocking on the door the other day, with a low loader asking if I wanted one of ours taking away. I politely told him no. But steel prices are good at mo, you shouldn't be paying people to take them away.

Its only Anti-freeze ???? Don't you realise that it a hazadous chemical, Not very responsable in my opinion, letting it run onto the road.:loopy:

I have heard lately that the price of ferrous scrap is going up, there is a demand in China - possibly something to do with some super- huge reinforced dam that is been constructed.....

No a car shell isn't only metal, it has been treated with a variety of chemicals eg rust proofing and underseal.:rolleyes:

I know, but how else are you supposed to do it, once you pull the hose off the bottom of the rad, gush!, it is everywhere, can't really help but get it on the floor :(

Paint, primer, underseal, yup it has. But do you think the steelworks employ someone with a scraper to get rid of it first? I think not! It all gets melted down, then the c*ap is separated.

Thats why my mum banned me from doing repairs on her driveway. I got hold of a large plastic barrel and cut it in half long ways so that it covers a large surface area and yet its low enough to slide under the car, but still doesnt alter the fact of what to do with the coolant once you have caught it though. its also good for catching used engine oil.

The thing to do with used anti-freeze is use it again!

If it is reasonably clean (i.e. not brown mud) then you can filter it through a cloth and pour it back into the radiator. The service manuals for many commercial vehicles (which work a lot more engine hours than a domestic car) suggest this.

Oil can be taken to a recyclers for cleaning. Basically they just take all the dirt out of it and then sell it back as cheap oil. Ok, you may not wnat to run finely tuned engine of a classic sports car on it, but my old Landrover runs on it quite happily.

But what really worries me about these new regs is that vehicles won't hang around in scrapyards for very long in running condition. And having rescued and restorred many a classic from forgotten corners of traditional scrapyards I am worried a significant part of our motoring herritage will be lost. If you want an illustratio of this, take a look at the old London B-Type bus from the early 1900s. Most were destroyed during the first world war, or cut up in scrap metal drives for the second. If you had kept one somewhere, it would now be worth over a quarter of a million pounds!!!!

We collect for FREE dont charge at all, no matter what, We dispose of it at a ATF and our company and the ATF inform DVLA of the car being scrapped

Why do you think legislation was brought out for metal recyclers to have a concrete pad at point of dismantling? Because they used to let all the crap soak into the ground such as anti-freeze & oil! They aren't just doing one, they are doing hundreds of the buggers on each site with all that crap soaking into the ground! Land polluted for ever:rant::rant::rant:

AS for Fluids..........There are loads, Power sterring fluid, anti freeze, oil, battery acid, gearbox oil, windscreen washer fluid, Brake fluid, Thats just a couple, Think about all the grease in the props and hubs,

ATF is the only way as they do it properly

Mine is 16 years old and I have plans for it for the next few years, after that no idea.

None of the above the care manufacture shoul deal with the problem. Just one point who has imposed these restrictions is it the idiots from Europe.

I recently hadto say goodbye to my Peugeot 405 Estate and we took it to a scrap merchant in Staveley who gave me £160 for it not bad for an almost knackered L reg car
