Even when I was a regular churchgoer two decades ago I never heard of anyone giving up anything for lent.

I've been to many different sorts of churches in the past 30 years - traditional and very non-traditional and all kinds of people give up things for Lent. I even know non-churchgoers who do it.

On a personal note, I might make another attempt at stopping biting my nails. If I don't have to tolerate trolls and imbeciles, it should be easier. :)

I've given up being pleasant to people like gas meter readers who think it would be a good idea to knock on my door at 7.30 as one bloke found out about an hour ago. It's been ages since I've told somebody to eff off and slamed the door in their face.

I don't think any religion tells you you should, it's up to you whether you want to or not. You can take it as an opportunity to see if you have a bit of willpower and self-discipline and do without something you like for a while or you can just go on giving in to every temptation (food, cigarettes or anything else) that comes your way.
