Giving up things for Lent?
Are you living in the 1950s or something?

Even when I was a regular churchgoer two decades ago I never heard of anyone giving up anything for lent.

I've been to many different sorts of churches in the past 30 years - traditional and very non-traditional and all kinds of people give up things for Lent. I even know non-churchgoers who do it.

So have I but the only time I have ever heard of anyone giving up anything for lent is on the Arches.

I'm giving up heroin but taking up crack.

I was very shocked when one of the children in my class handed me her typed homework today, entitled 'Why i worship my heroin'...:o

Luckily it was about a pop star heroine but all the way through she'd repeated the word... in some really dodgy places as well.

I was shocked when some dude asked me if I wanted to see his crack, then I realised he was trying to sell me drugs.

I'm going to give up men who think I'm the most interesting, fabulous creature they've ever come across. It won't be difficult, because those men don't actually want to meet me at all, they're just virtual liars, so I'll carry on as normal, dodging all the s**ts. :)

Chocolate I think, which will make me very miserable but will excuse me eating an entire Easter egg in one sitting come Easter Sunday.
I assume those knocking Lent won't be eating such products of organised religion? ;)

My tolerance of trolls and imbeciles on SF.

On a personal note, I might make another attempt at stopping biting my nails. If I don't have to tolerate trolls and imbeciles, it should be easier. :)

I've given up being pleasant to people like gas meter readers who think it would be a good idea to knock on my door at 7.30 as one bloke found out about an hour ago. It's been ages since I've told somebody to eff off and slamed the door in their face.

I prefer to try to do something positive instead of giving something up. Do a good deed every day or something, much better than being miserable.

giving things up because some religion tells me I should

I don't think any religion tells you you should, it's up to you whether you want to or not. You can take it as an opportunity to see if you have a bit of willpower and self-discipline and do without something you like for a while or you can just go on giving in to every temptation (food, cigarettes or anything else) that comes your way.
