View Full Version : The first snow thread of the 2004-5 season!
Well, we are reading in the press that it is being predicted we will have a record cold winter this year, with frequent snow showers.
So should it be correct, are we of the attitude
- yay, we haven't had PROPER snow for years!
or
- boo, it'll be cold, slippy and I won't be able to drive my car!
or don't you really care?

Both  :gag: :suspect:
Its a big booo from me, if I didnt have the worry of driving and working, then id love it. nothing would be better than sitting indoors infront of a roasting fire, however it would all be sliding about on the road and getting frost bite!!! Cant we see some effects of global warming right now?
HoneyGirl 13-10-2004, 12:50 It's a big wooohooo I love the snow and I go to work on the bus so great (and feasible) excuse to be late for work when the roads are white over!!!!
Fantomas 13-10-2004, 12:56 It's a woo from me for Christmas Day itself but a boooo if it means I can't drive over Snake Pass on Boxing Day to see my family over't hill.
Miss_smiley 13-10-2004, 12:59 Great, bring on the snow. I am happy to walk rather than use my car. Everyone seems so friendly when you are all having to walking to work. Its great.
carcrash 13-10-2004, 13:00 When was the last time we has a bad winter. It has got to be over 10 years ago
Its snowing now..in Hillsborough
If only to hear the imortal words from those guys at Hallam FM

Yes...a total of 1 flake fell. As a result trams are cancelled, buses are operating a skeleton service (no change there then), Langsett Road is gridlocked and I'm off to Morrisons (in snow shoes) to stock up on mushroom soup and horlicks.

:0(
I was looking foreward to going sledging in Meersbrook park.
And they said we were going to have bad snow falls last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, and........
Draggletail 13-10-2004, 14:28 BOO!
Our road isn't gritted, packed with cars and is in a dead end on a hill. I will have to grit the road myself to get to my truck out.
On jobs we will be slithering around trying to load up. BOO HOO HOO:(
BUT, we are having a new boiler fitted soon, so we will be nice and warm. YAY:)
A.B.Yaffle 13-10-2004, 14:47 I'd love to have a lot of snow to play in!
I don't mind if it means I can't drive my car as I usually walk to work anyway!
some_boy 13-10-2004, 14:47 every year the press come out with this! but ill enjoy the hype for now!
personally its a thumbs up from me, i prefer the cold, like getting wrapped up and my open fire!
live up near woodhead so normally see some snow, just hope its real bad this year!
"hello work...........see you in a month!"
I remember it snowed on New Year's Eve last year. I didn't get home until 8 o'clock in the morning somewhat the worse for wear (not because of the snow I might add).
I vaguely remember trying to "snow-board" (well that's what I called it at the time) down Tinker Lane, off Crookes, on a bit of plastic I found in a skip.
Bring on the snow I say! The bruises only took a few weeks to clear up!
:)
Spent last winter somewhere where there is lots of snow, and it was great. I hope we get alot this year. :D
wicko_boy 13-10-2004, 19:00 Remember spending New Years Eve at pub somewhere in Walkley which was on a hill.
When I tried to drive off, the car actually slid down the hill, despite me having brakes and handbrake on... scary!
Bring on the white stuff!
I see that the odds of a white Christmas have been slashed from 8-1 to 6-1. Better get those bets in sharp
I was just thinking the other day, that it's got very cold very early this year.
If their are no warm spells leading into winter ( which we have been getting over the last 10/15 years) then the temp will just keep dropping and in theory we'll be in for a classic winter!
Hope so myself, will be able to use those crampon's and ice axes on Kinder again.
Extra skiing trips in Scotland and a nice big white backdrop to lift those dark winter day's.
Bring it on, just hope their's not an Indian summer round the corner.
If you don't drive, work or have a life, then the 'predicted coldest winter' shouldn't bother you. I remember as a youngster/teenager the weather being pretty bleak but we 'managed' to get through it. If the buses stopped, as inevitably they did, then we walked! There's a strange eerieness about walking home in the snow in the dark - the deep, hollow crunches as feet meet with crisp white snow...
It really brings home the force of nature.
PaulTansley 14-10-2004, 08:25 BOO..
We don't want that horrible white stuff, it couses nothing but grief.
It can snow between December 14 and 21 if it likes as I will be cruising around the Canarys and North Africa though knowing my luck they will get the snow while Britain gets an Indian summer.
Talking of Indian summers I remember last bonfire night was about 55 deg and that is the warmest ever November I have known.
yay... snow!! i want lots of it! be nice if we could get a few feet of the stuff... I dont think we've had a good fall of snow since I was about 7 or 8? which would be like 11 or 12 years :(
bring on the snow! i want tons of it... course I'll never get into Uni though cus the 41 has nothing but double deckers now and they aint EVER gonna manage granvel road with snow on it lol
Hate it when it snows - will take me an age to get home as everything will snarl up and I don't have much choice but to drive.
Don't mind if it does it at weekends though.
jgharston 14-10-2004, 13:48 Cant we see some effects of global warming right now? [/B]
Increased cold and snow is the effect of global warming. Increased water vapour in the air, arctic sea surface warms, pushes Gulf Stream southwards, we get at normal 50degree north climate.
