View Full Version : What is sheffield lacking?
I want to know what you think sheffield needs.
Could be anything from a new coffee shop to a certain sort of art gallery or a sort of transport.
ANYTHING AT ALL.
maybe a new sort of magazine? a new network for people to meet eachother.
whatever.
I just want to know what you think sheffield is lacking or what you think would improve sheffield.

rubydazzler 19-02-2007, 22:46 We need a sophisticated place where the more mature amongst us can go for a night out, unless there already is one hidden away that most of us don't know about. Maybe a pub type venue where you can also dance, not too large and with areas where you can sit out and chat without being deafened.
I'm thinking back 25/30 years to the old "TurnUps" club at NetherEdge. The clientele at that time were all over 25 up to mid 60s and it was a really nice place to go out for the evening. IIRC, there was a bar area with a pool table and dartboard and also a dance floor with dj in another room, then you could sit in the foyer and have coffee and a snack.
I'd love to go out and have a dance and a drink, maybe a meal. But without constant loud music blasting out so that you wake up the next day with a sore throat from yelling at everyone. And the place full of beautful very young people making you feel that you shouldn't be taking up space!
Please dont suggest the Emnbassy or Bramall Lane, that's not what I have in mind at all. Oh, and preferably not in City Centre either.

You lack ambition.
A road system that works, and doesn`t get fouled up when a single vehicle breaks down causing knock on effects.

Why the long face rubydazzler? Great idea, the 400ft gonk plan - relatively cheap, huge positive impact. Go for it, could be a winner.

I thought "Dawn" bid "Knock Three Times" (and summat about yellow gibbons and oak trees). J R R Tolkien has never bothered the pop charts unless I'm very much drunk (sorry.....that should have been mistaken).

A Theme Park!.... it could be called Steel City or something and every ride could be educational as well as fun, there would be rides like 'The Knifeblade' and 'Screaming spoons' etc... you could have a cutlery corner where people could make their own cutlery in steel city!
The 3D cinema would be showing films of those old factories and crucibles and people would be dodging the red hot drops of metal flying about!... We could have a ride called 'The Manor' it would be a spooky trip around an abandoned town where you have to watch out for cars that drive round crazily and hooded muggers!
Then you'd sit in a flight simulator and get ready to take off to see Sheffield from the air.... but you'd never take off because Sheffield Airport is closed, so you'd get back off.
Is this great or what!?

Agent Gypo 20-02-2007, 11:23 What is Sheffield lacking?
The total obliteration of all Starbucks coffee shops. I don't think I need to explain this one.
The public hanging of officials who approve the awful new developments in and around the city centre. Face it, most of the new builds are toytown rubbish.
More small/medium sized club/gig venues. Underground promoters, or those starting out, will know what I mean. If you want to put something on over a weekend you haven't got a chance. Some of us don't like inde/rnb/breaks/funky house you know....
More independent shops. It does make me sad there aren't more places like Syd and Mallory's, and that many records shops are disappearing.

Disagree with u on the basis of indie / rnb / breaks / funky house are now very popular. If you think there is a music that is not catered for, why don't you try promoting it. You will find that it is not as easy as you may think.

I am a (small) promoter. I know it isn't easy.
My main problem is that there is a lot of music that is vastly over-catered for, while it's hard to put on anything even slightly different sometimes.

Believe it or not but certain music genres that are mentioned are not catered for. Real R&B is not catered for for starters. Only pop R&B is saturated by the clubs.

I know what you mean. Leeds gets famous worldwide chains, like the latest offering Nicky Clarke hair stylists, Harvey Nicks, Vidal Sassoon, Borders, Louis Vuitton etc - things you will never see in Sheffield. And Sheffielders have the nerve to brand Loiners as pretentious.
Aha!
What a wonderful, timely opportunity for me to throw my hat in the ring, and say that the one thing which Sheffield really lacks at present is an annual LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE.
I was involved on the committee which tried to plan one for last year, but as a result of not obtaining any funding, we could only go ahead with an informal picnic in Endcliffe Park, which nevertheless attracted well over 100 people.
I am on the working party for South Yorkshire PRIDE 2007, which is scheduled to take place on a Saturday this June.
However, S. Yorks. Pride is STILL URGENTLY looking for funding/sponsorship of the Pride event, from commercial or public organisations, so any of you posters who might have suggestions of local or national organisations we could still try (For example one's employer), I would be supremely grateful if you can PM me or email tyranna@alacroart.com (With PRIDE in the Subject line).
I am on the working party for Pride, not on the actual committee, but I have volunteered to help spread awareness of the plans for Pride, and the very necessary need for finding funding, on which the Pride will depend 100%, if it is to finally go ahead as planned this June.

Before you should have Gay Pride festivals, do you not think that there should be a multi cultural carnival. As west indians have been over in Sheffield for the best bit of over 50 years now. London, Nottingham, Leeds, Bristol, all have one. Its time well over due for Sheffield
I have been preaching this for the past 5 years and a lot forumers still do not understand how behind we are from Leeds.
My choices would be
Cleaner safer well lit streets ( some parts are scary at night)
Park keepers -some smaller parks are in a disgusting state
New council
Less chav scum and hoodie gangs
A window cleaner that actually cleans windows not smears the muck around
Don`t think there`s much chance of any of em tho :(
People putting thier ideas into action and be consistent to not be distracted and get their ideas done. :D

I don't often moan about the shops in Sheffield, I hate shopping mostly.....but a habitat and a Heals would be good. Other than that, the swimming pools are a bit rubbish. Ponds Forge is a nightmare to take young kids to...too much noise, far too many people....same for Hillsborough. We use Dronfield at the moment which is a bit old and tatty, but at least you can teach your kids to swim there. Roll on summer....and Hathersage pool here I come......so what we need is a few more nice outdoor pools.

Well said chipbuttie. If Sheffield is supposed to be this multi cultural, harmonious, city. Why is there not a carnival. Heard comments on the other threads about Sheffield is racist. Strong statements however although, crosses are not burnt at night, there is a tad of ignorance rife in the city which people can not deny. Things could be a lot better that could bring communities more together.
Please please please don't let Sheffield become like Leeds, I stayed here after Uni because I prefered it so much more to Leeds.
Maybe this was with Student goggles on but I always found Sheffield to be a really friendly and safe feeling city, and to be honest a lot less seggregation between communities as is found in Leeds. The people are so much more down to earth. Have you ever tried dodging the ego's in Leeds on a Saturday?
I agree a wider range of shops and just more shops in general would be really good, i just wouldn't want the regurgitation of the same old chains.
A bigger devonshire quarter would be mint, like the corn exchange in Leeds.....

On the scale of pretentiousness, I would put Leeds slightly ahead because there is a bigger "in-crowd" than Sheffield.
I think you have got student goggles on because Leeds although has had a notorious past in regards to race relations, seem to do a lot more in regards to bringing communities together than Sheffield. I think Sheffield students is very racially segregated myself as I have worked at Hallam and Sheff Uni and seen this with my own eyes.
Sheffield still needs to catch up to Leeds in terms of shops, economy and amenities and entertainment.
Sheffield is lacking in a decent gay scene. Why can't we have a up market, friendly and tastefully decorated place to go.
Dempseys has too many chavs
Fuel has too many bitches
Lions Lair is OK, some customers spoil it
Climax at the Uni is FAB but only once a month

Definitely agree the economy needs to catch up, which thinking about it, would probably come hand in hand with such things as shops etc.
In terms of entertainment, and this is just a genuine question, what does Leeds have that Sheffield doesn't? Some people would want the bars etc but when I moved to Sheffield Leeds didn't have:
An Arena
A decent useable outdoor venue, Roundhay Park gets used once in 5 years if we are lucky, Bramham/hope park(?)(the venue for the carling festival) is not really ideal location.
A Ski Slope - (I think the nearest to Leeds is now Castleford)
I don't even know if Leeds has an Ice Rink, I used to go to Bradford when I was in Leeds....

On the subject of bars and clubs. Sheffield clubs you can count on both hands where as in Leeds I would take a guess of maybe over 20 - 30 night clubs. Late bars there are probably over 50 in Leeds. In terms of different nights and variety. Leeds is way ahead of Sheffield. Sheffield has not even got a high profile R&B night on a weekend or a weekly deep house, or drum n bass night on a Saturday night.

True. In Leeds it is a good 35 nightclubs, and as for the late bars - well over 100 (I think at least 92 late licences were handed out there in 2002). Leeds is miles ahead of Sheffield in virtually every aspect - the number and quality of bars, shops, restaurants etc. Sheffield has such a lot of catching up to do.

sheffguy86 28-02-2007, 02:09 good architecture, brilliant night clubs, amazing sophisticated bars (baa bar especially - cheap shots in a decent environment), decent roads without pot holes, good shops and restaurants in the city centre such as zara, selfridges, harvey nichols, heals, apple, bershka, decent sized topman/topshop, est est est, habitat, french connection, muji, decent sized primark, brilliant boutique-esque shopping and eateries, but hey ho, thats just a dream, the city council - as much as they are hyping up the city regeneration - will never ever have the guts to invite or fight for shops like that, hence the reason i left and went over the pennies, much to my pity, as i never wanted to leave sheffield - but its lacking inspiration....
For me Sheffield lacks a vibrant city centre - there's no 'heart' to it. The centre is kinda 'elongated', stretched out. In fact the only part that is kind of OK is around Division Street. It compares very poorly in this respect to leeds or manchester for example
The nightlife is pretty rubbish too. Used to be better when Bed was open but there's a distinct lack of places to go for clued up or 'sophisticated' nights out.
A shame, really because i really like sheffield people - i've been here for 11 years or so after i finished uni

Yes, I can definitely see that, no heart to the City.
All very good points regarding the number of bars and clubs etc. Do you think that if Sheffield had a similar number of clubs to Leeds it would draw enough people though? I feel they would just all be half empty.....
Small nightclubs that help create that vibe we constantly hear people talking about in Manchester and Leeds

Got to say, I think it goes hand in hand. A nice girl is like water in the sahara desert. Usually they are girls with kids, divorced, idiot boyfriend etc etc. Too much baggage in Sheffield and not enough quality.

Thats going to be very hard. I think the new generation in-crowd however are not musically as open minded as people were 10 / 15 years ago. Manchester has radio to educate the crowd and Leeds has loads of clubs. We have unfortunately no media vices to form a ultra cool crowd, hence the few house clubs in town

After reading it all i realy think that something needs to be done to bring community spirit and city-wide pride to the whole of sheffield.
I love my area more than anything and feel proud to be from meersrbook but i think we need a sheffield carnival and fair bringing in all the minorities and majorities together.
bring on sheffield carnival 2009 (being realistic lol) Id love to front a commitee to see who would want to get envolved.
The thing Sheffield misses the most?
Working class folk.
Bring em back, that's what Ally says.
And the Cutlery factories, women buffers with the fags hanging out of their mouths, always having a good laugh while keeping their nose to the grind.
A road system that works, and doesn`t get fouled up when a single vehicle breaks down causing knock on effects.
and without the potholes
donuticus 09-04-2007, 21:56 How about locals who don't look down on people who want to better themselves. Not all, but a significant minority of people, dislike anyone who has acheived anything with their lives. Those who have acheived something, of course, have only made it because their "posho" parents have given them everything, hard work and determination doesn't enter the argument.
CorkerSWFC 09-04-2007, 22:35 I want to know what you think sheffield needs.
Could be anything from a new coffee shop to a certain sort of art gallery or a sort of transport.
ANYTHING AT ALL.
maybe a new sort of magazine? a new network for people to meet eachother.
whatever.
I just want to know what you think sheffield is lacking or what you think would improve sheffield.
peace and love x
More food outlets in the city centre would be a good start, for a city sheffields size its choice for some where to have something to eat leaves a lot to be desired.
^^That's on its way. Leopold Square which sould be finished soonish will have quite a few food outlets, and unique ones at that (asin not chain ones). St. Pauls place will have lots of food places too, but probably more chain type ones.
craigmason 10-04-2007, 10:18 a public aquarium would be nice in the city centre
good decent honest men
There are thousands of those, you must be looking in the wrong places.
a public aquarium would be nice in the city centre
For once, craigmason, you and I are in agreement about something. It would indeed.
An aquarium is a great idea. I've always thought Sheffield couldd do with a zoo. :-P
CorkerSWFC 10-04-2007, 12:29 here here about the aquarium it would be like the old days with the hole in the road, the kids would love it.
Before you should have Gay Pride festivals, do you not think that there should be a multi cultural carnival. As west indians have been over in Sheffield for the best bit of over 50 years now. London, Nottingham, Leeds, Bristol, all have one. Its time well over due for Sheffield
Do I get the feeling that you may be slightly homophobic. Are our feelings not as important as those of ethnic minorities. We too have been in Sheffield for over 50 years (or should that be 500 years), does that not count.

I'm sure gay people have been in Sheffield over 50 years ago, so why should a multi cultural carnival come before a Gay Pride festival?

So so true  High Street & Pinstone Street are on a knife edge :help:
