My two eldest 10 & 7 are pestering for karate lessons. I am not averse to them learning some self defence but wondered if anyone has any recommendations to type & clubs in the Loxley, Stannington, Hillsborough area. Are they best just learning boxing or judo, or anything else?

Thanks
Mark

Let them try karate if that's what they're interested in.
Also try the search facility, this question gets asked about once a month.

anything is probably better than nothing - persoanlly i'd go with judo or particularly boxing out of those you've mentioned, but if there interest is in karate i'd go with that.

At about the same age I became a member of the British Wado Ryu Karate Union (I think!!)

I was taught that Karate was all about the Self Defence, protecting yourself rather than attacking. This was followed through by the moves we learned and the routines we had to master to pass our various exams. It was also backed up by the way our teachers told us to conduct ourselves in general.

Don't get me wrong, no martial art is about going at someone both arms swinging like a Windmill, but for the age I was at the time (under 10 when i started) I think it was a great place to start...

find out why they want to learn it first.
it is after all menat to be a "way of life, grasshopper" and for self defence.
karate was ok for me - i did wado ryu which was contact almost from day one.

I think a mix of Judo and Boxing is good for kids

For Karate, I think Goju Ryu Karate, check the link below http://www.magsandy.freeuk.com/

Judo is excellent for physical strength and also for all round fitness.
Also Judo is very "ground based" if your kids like to roll about on the floor a lot.

Boxing is straight to the point and is both effective and character building.
However, a lot of boxing gyms are full of bad language and such. If your kids are already a "bit rough" anyway then thats ok but I would hesitate to recommend boxing gyms to most "over sensitive" parents.

Kickboxing is another option.
Kickboxing has the hand skills, evasion skills and fitness aspect that boxing possesses with added weapons , the LEGS (etc) .

I mainly specialise in adult classes or Small group/private lessons but there is a kids class starting up tomorrow at the Adrenalin Centre in Southey Green.

Thursday 530-630pm.

At that age .... Judo is a fantastic base for any martial art (vast majority of the top japanese karate men have dan grades in Judo too).

In your area there is a Judo club at Hillsborough LC, Barry Nash's Shukokai karate club at the same place, a number of Taekwondo classes ......

If they want to 'toughen up' a bit, take them to the Rugby League club at Hillsborough arena ....

Hi John!
Actually when it comes to Karate, im sure John (Shotokarate) wont mind taking on a few junior recruits?
Shotokarate has first hand experience working with kids (he is CRB checked too) , he is an RE teacher for his sins.

the judo clubs i've been to in sheffield teach about 5% groundwork, which from talking to other people is representitive of many judo clubs, simply because of the path its followed in terms of the sport. it's a great palce to start, but i wouldn't expect too much groundwork

I believe Master Nick Maskrey runs a Taekwondo/Hapkido club up in stannington, cant remember where exactly.

Lots of kids train there, place at the side for parents to sit and watch. Taekwondo teaches them the kicks, punches and strikes. Hapkido, self defense and close up work.

Decent bloke nick. Took the floor on my 1st Dan.
