View Full Version : Had a curry from Cafe Masala and it was really good.
neeeeeeeeeek 17-02-2007, 21:23 Living in Burngreave I have the Mangla and the much better Gulshan to get curry from but thought I would try Cafe Masala after seeing the advert on here. Massive portions, excellent food, cheap prices, freindly guys, TRY IT!

Got curry for lunch tomorrow as they give you far to much food.
Not complaining mind. :)
An excellent menu with some unusual options which I intent to try very very soon.
:)
hennypenny 17-02-2007, 22:27 Is that the delivery service that someone was asking for name suggestions for recently on SF?
If so I like the name :)
I am a bit strange with curry, as I love the majority of spices and flavours, but absolutely hate pepper, chilli or anything even slightly hot.
Do you know if they will make a mild version on request, or does it have to be the standard version?
davedavedave 17-02-2007, 22:54 me hungy homer now!
muddycoffee 17-02-2007, 23:14 Great news.
Sounds really good. Where is this curry joint situated?
Is it on the main road ?
neeeeeeeeeek 18-02-2007, 09:04 They have 2 branches, this one is on Upperthorpe road, (in the row of shops near Tesco at Upperthorpe) They have a nother branch somewhere. I mentioned the address wsa not obvious on the web site (I had to ask them where they were as went to collect) Got free popdoms and cans of pop which was a nice gesture. They will make things that are not on the menu if yuou don't like chilli heat then try the butter chicken. great for al chilli wusses everywhere. :)
I ordered a side dish of Sagg Panier which was only a couple of quid, got loads of it and it was really nice. Panier is often a bit rubbish from takeaways.
westilad80 19-02-2007, 11:52 Will have to try it now. Can't live with the Mangla though!!
I'm hungry now!!!

I live 2 mins away from the Mangla and have stopped using it. If you ordered 4 dishes from them and they did not stick labels on the boxes you can't tell the bloody difference half the time, they don't seem to give a toss about what they sell you. It's not so bad eating in, I guess it's easier to complain but from a takeaway point they have gone down hill badly. Also the last time me and a few friends ate in we all had rings of fire in the morning, something only the Mangla seems to cause. We had different dishes of varying strength so I don't think it was down to ordering too spicy food, I think they use lots of cheap chilli powder in their stock sauce and not enough fresh chilli, I don't get problems like that anywhere else. I generally buy curry from Gulshan on the Wicker but it's good to find somewhere else to get it from. here is hoping all their dishes are as good :)

True say, Cafe Masala in S6 have some really interesting (and delicious) indian dishes which is worth exploring.
I am making most of their "2 for 1" offer whilst it lasts.

we used ot love the mangla but had an iffy one last time (correction, all 3 of us had different but all got food poisoning which put us off going again). Might have to explore this cafe masala though...Mmmmm middle of the night and curry is sounding very tempting.
Sounds good, not far from some decent boozers either. :)
Is it just a takeaway? The web site suggests so but its called 'Cafe'.
This place looks excellent neeeek, the missus works till 8pm at Walkey, so could get her to pickup. Thanks for the link.
Got to agree with Mangla too. We had some food from there on Tuesday, the cartons were only half-full, and the food was far too salty.
holymoses 17-10-2007, 12:16 I've just read cafe massala's menu.
While at work eating my cheese butty lunch.
I can't wait till I finish to order a take away.
I can almost taste it,
Bye Bye - cheese butty.
Hello - Tandoori Butter Chicken (Cooked in rich creamy mild sauce and garnished with butter). with Pilau Rice and a Special Nan (Garlic, keema and green chilli) washed down with lashings of John Smiths.
This is not just food... this is gastronomic ecstasy!
We ordered from the Walkley branch the other day. The naans were lovely (garlic one was verrrrry garlicky), and as big as bin lids, every dish we had was gorgeous. Mmmmmmm!
neeeeeeeeeek 17-10-2007, 14:17 They do a great garlic chilli chicken if you ask them, it's not on the menu but they are happy to cook it.
:)
Got to agree with you about Mangla, although someone told me on Sunday that it appears they've changed chef and the food's improved markedly as a result. Can anyone confirm that?
Have to say, I've never been in Gulshan, it looks from the outside like your classic oil n' cornflour type of place - tell me more! Normally end up in Kashmir these days, which I think is good. Mind you that looks like your classic bombed-out derelict from the outside. Paul - get a new bloody frontage done!
Fletvictus 17-10-2007, 18:01 Been going to the Mangla most weeks for years (eating in, not takeaway). I think it did seem to go downhill in food quality for a bit, but last few weeks has been fine.
In the past, the key point about the Mangla has been that while the food quality was (in the old days) absolutely excellent, the prices have always been unmatchable elsewhere. Prices are still very good.
How do Gulshan and Cafe Massala compare to Mangla on price? We should maybe try Cafe Massala next week - can you eat in there as well as takeaway?
I asked that earlier, not had an answer yet!
Fletvictus 17-10-2007, 20:05 If we don't get an answer we'll have to wait until one of us gives in and phones them, or does a drive-by to check :-)
A.B.Yaffle 17-10-2007, 21:00 We ordered from there tonight. The food was very good quality, the best Indian delivery we've had since we moved to Hillsborough.
Delivery took a little bit longer than we were quoted on the phone, but we did get a discount for that.

Its a takeaway only at the moment but I am told that they've got plans to turn it into a cafe style restaurant in the near future. Cant wait...

Same here Patchy. Told us 45 mins, but it was an hour. Mind you, it was worth the wait! (Also allowed more time for a pre-curry drinky :D
neeeeeeeeeek 18-10-2007, 17:49 I always find they say 45-1 hour but it hs always turned up quicker! ah well, must be all the extra custom from this thread! Gulshan is / was bloody great but is still shut. I can;t see it reopening very quickly, not until the roadworks are sorted.

We've just been told minimum of 1.5 hours (and that was "squeezed in between others - we are local to them).
Gonna fetch it instead:D

Its been a while since I've been pass the Wicker but I must say the new Gulshan look is very slick and modern, unlike before. I wonder if their food is still as good as before?
Just wondered what people recent experience of Cafe Masala is? We ordered some food to be delivered, after reading good stuff on here but were very disappointed. Food took over 1.5hrs (were told 45mins to an hour and had to ring to chase it up), food was luke warm, meat (apart from chicken) was tough and the pasanda sauce looked like it had curdled. Lovely onion bhajis though.

We had some food delivered last week; it came within 30 mins and was pretty good. The sauces were very tasty (and damned hot - but that's how I like it!), the meat was plentiful and the lamb was reasonably tender. I enjoyed the left-overs even more the next day.
To my mind, Cafe Masala is the best of a not very distinguished bunch for deliveries.
Alastair 24-11-2008, 16:09 Cafe Masala is very good. I heard they have another establishment on Abbeydale Road, does anyone know which one? And is their food as good as Cafe Masala?
digirunoff 24-11-2008, 19:11 Cafe massala is excellent, I love their special Biriyani and if your like me the idea of a madras is a young man's game they do really nice mild curries. If you use the interweb a lot they're on just-eat.co.uk and you don't have to pay by credit card, if you kick it old school like me and prefer to pay when the food turns up.
Thanks for feedback, we'll give them one more chance...perhaps an off night. As you say PeteMO1, there is not a great choice around the S6 area for delivered indian food!
shaunna86 24-11-2008, 21:55 I live near cafe masala and used to go all the time when it was saudies, (I loved that place) then it went right odwn hill and I have not been so far and goin to one on commonside, the otha day after a long day I ordered a starter etc from there and I have to say that it was nicest indian i have ad in years, my sister then went the day after and ad a kebab and of coz I nicked abit and by god I ad to send her dwon for another 1 was so nice. Thanks! I will have to dig out an old flyer.
Cheers,

We order from Cafe Masala too, despite living less than 50 yards away from another take away. We've never been disappointed, although on one occasion the food did take a little longer than they had quoted.
shameless bloody advertising i tell yer
it pays to advertise.
:o OMG thanks for this thread I'm cooking a curry now and forgot I had it on the stove! just caught it in time:hihi:
If you go on the just eat site you can see the menu on there
http://www.just-eat.co.uk/restaurants-cafemasala/menu-3794
Be wary though, I used the site to place an order to collect but it went through as delivery, So got down there to find my food was at home. I'll just ring next time :hihi:

Womerry2 30-10-2009, 18:09 Sorry to bring back an old threat, but we just had a curry from Cafe Masala through Just-Eat.co.uk, and it was wonderful. The spinach dishes are amazing, the mushrooms were scrumptious, and the meat eaters tell me that the chicken was perfect. We are very pleased to have found a really good curry delivery place again - the food is lovely and fresh, very well packed and delivered on time and by a very friendly driver. Prices are very reasonable, too. We'll re-instate the regular curry night now, just in time for winter. Bliss.
I'm pretty sure cafe masala have received 0 out of 5 stars in the scores on the doors food hygiene / safety site. That alone would mean I'd never eat from there ...

Womerry2 31-10-2009, 16:55 That rating is nearly a year old. I assume they've improved greatly as the resident teen, always the first to come down with any stomach bugs, is suffering no ill-effects at all.

As a family, we have had several curries from the Cafe, with no ill effects. Still, I hope that they have cleaned up their act after that report.
