It actually does what it says on the tin

Wait till you see the on-demand replays though.. thats the icing on the cake if ever there was one.

I've had both and V+ is MILES better in my humble opinion.

I love it and it's so much cheaper, too.

and as for having to purchase a Sky HD box to sue HD, thats a load of crock, most of the newer Sky+ boxes have a Digital Interface upgrade slot on the back and you can upgrade them to support HD at a fraction of the cost of a HD Box..

We have had Sky+ and never had to have our box replaced either, the biggest problem is that they use Maxtor Hard drives, and Maxtor are notorious for going down....

plus, the sky package were on, = cheaper than the Virgin package, for more channels.... Were not into sport, so dont have the sky sports channels :)

as you need to be in a cable area it would be pretty pointless to almost everyone over this neck of the woods, in fact all my family wouldn't be able to get it.

I've had V+ (or Telewest TVDrive as it was until recently) since it was first available and can't fault it. 80 hrs at standard definition, rewind live TV up to an hour and a half, HD support, 3 tuners etc. all for £10 month.

As for the on-demand bit - it's nothing to do with V+ it's part of the normal service (not sure how much of it is accesible on the lowest package). Great service though - loads of good stuff on demand that I've watched over the last year(ish) - Shameless, Waking The Dead, Teachers, Cold Feet etc. plus numerous stuff I'd missed but found it on the replay section. Then there's around 500 films to choose from at any one time with another shed load of porn on top of that :) The films and porn you have to pay for (they're still pausable even with the V+ box) but it still wipes the floor with Sky.

Ghozer. What personal issues have you got with Virgin Media (Telewest)? Every post I see about them you are slating them.

everyone else on here seems to save money with virgin (including me) and has better equipment with the virgin + box

I dont have any personal issues with them, Just for us, and our preference, and from our point of view, Sky+ is the better option..

You get more movie channels, more 'standard' channels, were not into sports so we dont have sky sports, plus you can record and watch at the same time (record 2... 1+what your watching)..

the 'teleport' service where you can watch the back catalogue has programs we dont watch any way, we have family members who have said how poor teleport is, and we have looked at it and the system doesnt see as 'nice' as sky's

so yeah, for us, Sky+ is the better, and cheaper option... thats all im saying, I thought these forums were all opinions and everyones views on said subject, to give a wide picture???

I can't understand anyone that wouldn't like the Teleport and the OnDemand services. You have loads and loads of past series - hundreds of them - it's fantastic. Have you looked into it and seen the extent of it?

I understand that it isn't for everyone, I'm not trying to change your mind, I just don't believe that anyone can say it's poor. It's a (large) extra service.

Teleport (or whatever they've changed it to) is free as well so you can't exactly complain. There's an absolute shed load of stuff on it - some good and some not but again - it's free :) It's all pausable and has the adverts removed which is nice and handy.

The TVDrive/V+ box has (and always has had) 3 tuners - you can record 2 channels while watching a 3rd.

I have just ordered skyplus. oops, oh well. :(

as I said, the MAIN reason we wanted Sky+ over cable TV was the lack of Movie Channels on Telewest, and Various other channels that Sky have, that cable doesnt

Doesn't V+ have a less HD content as well or am I out of date on that? Last I heard they were getting ITV HD (which Sky aren't getting) but had less HD channels overall.

My V+ box records 80 hrs, whereas the Sky+ box I had only recorded 40 hrs. So double the memory with cable for less money.

Just had me new HDTV boxed installed today at 9:20am, They engineer said thats it wait 2-3hrs abd the stations will be on. 7 hours later not picture. I rang up Virgin and the engineer had supplyed us with an unregisted smart card. So we registed it ( that should have been engineers job ). , we were then told to wait a further 2hrs to get all the channels.

Now tried it again and we have unlocked all the channels but a blank screen. The bar at the bottom says sky movies one ect... your now viewing starwars but the screen and sound an't there.

So after phoning Virgin for a 5th time we now have to stay in again or face a fine if we miss another engineer to fix this issue. ranting

Yeah we have had problems with out internet and tv but look what deals you get when u complain so much.
Basically just ring them up, say your leaving then they offer u a deal!
Well anyways back to V+ vs Sky+, sky can only record 40 hours, v+ does 60, and from what i have heard from my friends who hae sky+ they all moved to v+.
And if i am correct v+ can have internet on it through an ethernet cable? not sure about a sky+. but yeah i would totally go for the V+, and even if you dont get v+ virgin is better than sky, way way way more on demand programm i find the guide really easy to use, easy to navigate, on sky its just like :confused:

well it dose when Virgin billed as HDTV, watch TV In HD. What they don't tell you it's 1 station that's on for 2-4 hrs a day that shows rubbish like bleak house repeats.

The TIVO functions on the box are disappointing, there are far to many stupid 'Are you sure' type messages that effect your recording times. The box overheats quiet a lot and locks up. leaving you to disconnect it and re connect it.

We had it for 6 months and gave up on the thing after the 4th V+ broke we threw in the towel.

Just got my v+ box now. its absoloutley great, he had it all set up within ten minutes. all our channels working and everything
very easy to work, box is a bit different to old one but its just really really good.

I reccomend the v+everyone, it is so easy to use and it looks great

And if you get the right person setting it up your fine. he explained everything that he did, showed us the box and everything.

Following on from my posts on this last year...... it all went wrong. Lost all my programs, refused to let me access the V+ features, on demand stopped working. Experienced possibly the worst customer service (if you can call it that) known to man - false promises, outright lies, complete incompetence etc. so I ditched them. I've since moved house and can't get cable anyway.... which I don't see as a bad thing anymore. It's a shame as when they were Telewest I had nothing but praise for them, they're just laughably useless now.

i got 3 courtesy calls from virgin media, one to confirm some one is coming, one to confirm they were 5 minutes away and one to confirm everything was fine.

There are some HD films available as well through the on demand service, but the HD selection is very poor compared to sky.

I can't agree with the TIVO comment though, my box reliably records everything we've scheduled, it crashes about once every 6 months if that, it's never overheated and the are you sure messages are just normal to confirm when you are deleting something.

yeah i agree, yeah only a few hd things but the tivo bits are absoloutley fantastic so far.
They warned us it might jam now and again if we try to make it do too much, like press a same button loads. All you do is wait a few seconds, if it doesnt unjam press the reset button on the front, simple!

Agreed - Sky+ is getting a bum rap here (never mind Sky HD)

Having used Sky and now having a V+ box, the V+ box sucks so much arse! The program guide is slower than surfing on a 56k modem, it's ridiculous. Both my TV's Freeview EPG and another Freeview box I have have much faster EPGs than Virgin.

You'd think being able to supply 20Mbps broadband they could at least make an EPG work faster than a snails pace.

The build quality of the Virgin boxes is also very low.

Who's pro's and con's list is it you're analysing? And why didn't you just create your own?
Presumably for some of the comments that people have made they've used both services, I haven't, so I've only given what I've found to be both positive and negative with V+ and I can only compare to the basic Sky service.
I've even agreed that Sky has a lot more HD content as I've seen that on other peoples systems.

There is no 'bias', there are just peoples opinions, which may happen to differ from yours.

I hope so, cos they seemed a bit confused when i rung them back to sort it out, asking if id said i was going to cancel etc. and if thats why they offered it me :huh: just said i got a phone call saying i was a good customer and been with them for a long time, although i dont think from October 07 is such a long time :hihi: but im not complaining about getting it for that cheap :D

Im still a bit optimistic about it tho (if thats the right word), i just cant see how they can offer it so cheap with its normally £150 plus a monthly fee if your not on the top package, just hope im not going to get any extra added to my monthly bill because of it even tho they said not :suspect:

I can give you the Sky + Pros and Cons, I don't have a V+ Box, so can't comment on that:

Pros:
- Easy to record programs, with the series link feature being fantastic.
- Sky Anytime gives you a selection of 'On-Demand' shows.
- Can record two channels whilst playing back recorded content.
- Is free if you get Sky Sports/Movies.
- GUI is impressively simple.

Cons:
- Sky Anytime content is downloaded to the box, due to Sky's restriction as it uses a satelite (therefore cannot upload information) this means a true on-demand service is unlikely to happen.
- HD content is not, by default, accessible.

My V+ box records 80 hrs, whereas the Sky+ box I had only recorded 40 hrs. So double the memory with cable for less money.

But it's not hard to upgade the Sky + box with a bigger hard drive
V+ is buggy and very slow to change channels and has only one HD channel.
I'm on my third V+ box and the only thing keeping me with VM is the fact I'm 2.6 km as the crow flies from the nearest BT exchange

You have got to be joking. We're on our 3rd Virgin box in as many months. The boxes constantly reboot, we have had to use a scart splitter as the Virgin Box goes mental if you turn the DVD player on (and yes, it's all connected properly), even the Virgin engineer didn't understand it. Of course you do need to spend a good 40 minutes on the phone to India to get this far, then you threaten to cancel to actually get someone to do something about it and then you still get charged for the premium rate call to the Support line even though it's their equipment at fault.

The list is endless, of all my communicate to Virgin (and dear God, there's been a lot), I've only even spoken to one lass who was helpful enough to see there really was a problem, fix the problem, financially compensate us and return the £5 we incorrectly paid for us to tell them their equipment was knackered.

That said, I am a huge fan of Virgin on Demand and I think Sky is grossly overpriced. But please, do not labour under the impression that Virgin sort things out quickly - nothing could be further from the truth in most cases.

I'm still on my first V+ box after over 12 months. I guess it just depends. Mine has never had a fault apart from crashing about once every 6 months and needing reset pressing.

i just recived a phone call from virgin offering me the v+ box for a one off payment of £30.. and no extra payments for the v+ service... i heard normally u have to pay £5 a month or some thing..so i had to take the offer up.. so now im getting: v+ xl, free calls 10meg broadband for £45 a month.. sky would never do a deal like that. i have had 2 family members conned into joining sky saying they will get all this free **** and its just all lies.. and the service is just shocking... virgin all the way

did you know that you can get a 2nd V+ in the bedroom for £75.00 and then pay nothing at all every month!! and the techs will still come out if you have a problem with it!

1 streaming channel, but that's not the point. There's plenty of on demand HD, HD films and so on.

yeah because its running off 2 diffrent boxes. they run of there own mac address .. like internet modems you can have more than one running in your house at a time and still getting the speed your paying for on both its not halfed because you have 2...

V+ is buggy and very slow to change channels and has only one HD channel.
I'm on my third V+ box and the only thing keeping me with VM is the fact I'm 2.6 km as the crow flies from the nearest BT exchange

The post you quoted was from Feb 2007. I would imagine that both Sky, and Virgin, have upgraded the hard drives on their equipment since then.

I admit to being on my second box, but had no problems getting it replaced, and I'd had it for about 3 years.

I still love Virgin, have no need for Sky Plus or HD channels, but haven't really now kept abreast of the changes Sky have made.

everybody can get sky - makes it more accessible and better by default in that case.

I am currently looking at both these packages but in the south of the country (pleaase don't lynch me just 'cos I'm a southerner. Lol). Not everyone can get sky because unless you have a BT land line they won't connect you. This will cost me £122 making it more expensive then Virgin. Currently Sky are offering their Sky + box free (with offer code) or their Sky + HD box for £49 compared to the £99 for Virgin. I don't know about customer care for SKy but Virgin are a nightmare. Not only do they get your name wrong, o several occassions the advice they give differs each time you phone. They also do not update you on latest offers etc, leaving you to look them up for yourselves and only getting them when you threaten to remove the service. My current V box is very slow to respond and on demand takes for ever to load. I don't know what the V+ box is like but I hope it responds quicker than the standard one. I am still deciding which one to go with but Sky is so far wining over. I wonder why Virgin were so keen for me to see this web site and no other comparison sites.
