View Full Version : Alternative Yarn Suggestions (again!)
I'm still debating what to do for MIL for her birthday. I decided last night to change the yarn for the Clapotis to some Blue Sky Alpacad & Silk. Now i'm thinking about changing from the Clapotis to branching out (http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring05/PATTbranchingout.html).
The pattern says its 65% wool 35% silk or 70% mohair 30% silk.
I was thinking Rowan Kidsilk Haze. What do you think?
I am no expert but that should be ok I would have thought. The mix of materials is similar and the guage although the pattern syas is not crucial is quite close.
Lucy-Lastic 17-02-2007, 10:22 Ive seen one done - thought it was on the Angel Yarns forum in that yarn and it looked really nice. Found this site (http://knittybranchingout.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_knittybranchingout_archive.html)and someone has started one with KSH and 5mm needles - found progress here (http://ditzyknits.blogspot.com/search/label/knitting?updated-max=2006-01-03T13%3A43%3A00Z&max-results=20) and it finished here (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7355/1787/1600/BO_final.0.jpg).
What do you think littleblue? :hihi:
Thanks ladies! I've ordered some in Glacier from Get Knitted. Looking forward to knitting it now!

That looks really lovely. I thought the pattern might be obscured a bit by the KSH, but it isn't at all.
I did more than one Branching Out in Rowan's Summer Tweed - totally the wrong yarn for the project (and not very nice yarn to work with, IMO), though the end result didn't look too bad.

Hmmm...think some DK is needed :hihi:

Hmm, i started 'branching out' in Kidsilk Haze a short while ago, and my results did not look like that!
My 'version' was not as pretty as that, it seemed like you couldn't really see the detail from the pattern very well, but im wondering if i just bodged it abit in a few places (highly likely...:hihi: ) Though to be honest whenever i pick kidsilk haze up i want to scream, like Jill said on another thread, its like knitting with air its sooo light. I can't say i'm a big fan of Kidsilk Haze!
Good luck with it though Jules! :)

What size needles did you use? Would it have looked more like that after a good blocking - lace often needs it:)

I used 5mm needles. It might have looked better after blocking....never really thought about that  I was finding it hard (and still do) to knit with Kidsilk Haze as well, so my knitting was probably not as tidy as it could have been.
Thought you might like to see progress of Branching Out so far. Its here (http://madstitcher.wordpress.com/) on my blog. If you look down the left hand side you'll see a pic of it on my Flickr pages.
It took a couple of goes, but I've got there eventually. The Kid Silk Haze arrived today to start the one for my MIL so I need to find some more needles out now!

That is very nice. Did you mention the yarn you were using for it? It has a lovely sheen to it. My Branching Outs in the Summer Tweed looked really flat and dull in comparison. Seeing yours makes me want to get the pattern out again.
EDIT: By the way, is that a MLI 'Celtic Banner' I saw on your blog? I adore that pattern. I've been meaning to buy it for ages, but have never got around to it. What fabric did you use for the background?
Just re-read the first post. Is the Branching Out done with the Blue Sky Alpacca & Silk, Jules? If so, what's it like to work with, because it looks like it suits that pattern perfectly.
Its done in Rowan Tapestry. I have got some Blue Sky Alpaca I got from America last year, before it was available over here, that is lovely and soft.
This Branching out was just a practice but i'm pleased with the result so far. The one for my mother in law is going to be in Kidsilk Haze.
Yes, that is Celtic Banner. I think I've had it about 5 years now. I can't remember which fabric t was. I got everything from here (http://www.stitchdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Celtic_Banner.html) which I can highly reccomend!
I have some Tapestry in blue. I think I'll give Branching out a try with that too (mum's birthday coming up very soon). About half a ball of it is currently knitted up as a needle holder, though as I'm bored with row after row of stocking stitch, it's definitely on the frogging list.
