View Full Version : Whats happening with the way threads appear in 'for sale'?
martin66 17-02-2007, 08:31 Whats happening with forum lately, not liken the new way on the, Wanted and For Sale part is the annoying, when someone replys to your thread or if you write something, it does not go up to the top again.
So how do you know if anyone has replyed, apart from scrolling through pages just to check:confused:
You can change the way you want to see it if you look at the bottom of the page.
martin66 17-02-2007, 12:16 How? i cant see anything!
It's a little experiment we're trying.
Over the last 6 months we have repeatedly asked people nicely to stop bumping. Most people seem to be able to use the Forum's resources without bumping, but there were a substantial minority who didn't get the message.
So, we've removed bumps, banned bumpers for varying lengths of time, posted numerous warnings, and now we're getting tired of the extra work involved and so we've modified the software as an experiment.
The suggestion was actually made by a user to us, and it seems to work very well at stopping bumping. :)
At the bottom of the page is a line like of drop-downs, starting with 'Sorted By : Thread Start Time. Just click on the dropdown to change it to 'Last Post Time'
martin66 17-02-2007, 15:05 Sorry mate i can see that thing your on about, sorry for being so thick
princess01 17-02-2007, 15:16 i know what you mean martin ,i was selling something on forum, was not at the top or hi-lighted so i thought no-one had replyed, but they had and did'nt know about it.
and i cant find that line thing he's on about
i thought it was ok before i understood it better
Hi,
I appreciate that it's a bit awkward, but what it does mean is that the default view of those sections of the Forum means that genuinely new items for sale are at the top, and that anything being 'bumped' stays where it is in the listing.
As I said above, it's a shame we've had to do it, but actually removing the bumps (which had the effect of driving new posts down the list) was taking up increasing amounts of time.
The only other way forward was to give the bumpers VERY long bans, but we felt that that was a bit OTT. :)
princess01 17-02-2007, 17:04 yes i can understand, but for thoses who dont bump lose out!!!
But i will just have to live with it
Thanks anyway
discodown 17-02-2007, 20:00 can i just ask whats been happening today? threads locked bans everywhere? what have i missed?
evildrneil 17-02-2007, 20:41 You could always subscribe to your own for sale threads then you get an email if there has been any response :)
surfinjim 17-02-2007, 21:57 All I've noticed is that people are relisting adverts for the same stuff as new threads. Thus, bumping the genuine stuff down again.....
Preferred it the other way. If users are bumping then a quiet word followed by a ban would seem a reasonable solution.
Jim:thumbsup:
evildrneil 17-02-2007, 21:59 If you come across multiple threads please report them - as we find them (and we do make semi-regular sweeps) they do get removed!

Like Neil says - if you see 'em, report them.
We've tried the quiet word and ban approach, and like I said earlier on we're trying this out as a new approach.
We'll try various options - and we have a few left that are even more radical than this one. :)
Sheffielder 18-02-2007, 00:26 Is it not worth deleting/archiving the items that are sold ?
We prune them out every now and again, and we probably could do it more fequently.
Like I said, we're currently trying a few things out in the Classifieds section to make it work better in general.
It's just that, like all experiments, it sometimes takes a while to get teh best results.
martin_f 18-02-2007, 01:55 Thanks for a thread explaing this, but i i still think the threat of a ban for bumping should be done.
I have seen it too often that regural users have seemed to get away with this, going as far as to post on their theards bumpity bump, this is not fair.
surfinjim 18-02-2007, 03:18 I used to bumpity bump, but a friendly word of warning steered me in the right direction.
Jim:thumbsup:
The PM system also works very well; I've just received a few PMs from people who've expressed interest in stuff I want to sell. :)
