Hiya,
I'm looking for a (preferably free) pattern for a cool cardigan - chunky knit, can be made with cheapish wool.
Anyone have any ideas?

Have you checked out the usual suspects: Knitty, Magknits etc? There are also links to free knitting patterns in the recommended links section at the top of the page.

There's a long list of cardigan patterns in the Knitty archive (http://knitty.com/archiveCARDIGANS.html). It might be worth going through those.

One I'm working on at the moment is Camellia from Glampyre Knits (http://www.glampyreknits.com/). You have to pay for the pattern but it's only a few quid I think. Really easy and quick to make.

I don't know whether it's the kind of thing you want though - it is knit in chunky wool which JillM from The Wool Baa kindly sourced for me.

The Rogue (http://www.girlfromauntie.com/patterns/shop/rogue/detail.php) pullover can be 'cardiganised'. There are instructions on the net, and I think someone on here has done it. The pattern isn't free (it's $6 - you buy it on line and download it as a pdf file), but it is lovely.

That's gorgeous. What yarn are you using for it?
