View Full Version : Project Ideas - Lets be having them
littleblue 16-02-2007, 11:55 Its a miserable day and there is nothing left to do. I think the winter/spring needs cheering up and some fab projects started.
So what are you going to be doing in the next month or so?
I'm still making the Debbie Bliss Pure Silk bolero..not quite in wearable state yet!
I'm going to finish off my 4ply cardi, before number 2 child grows out of it :D
I've just ordered some SWTC oasis yarn to do a clapotis for MIL's birthday:)

Had to look this up  Found out what is it now, very nice
littleblue 16-02-2007, 13:10 I've just had a look at it too - very tempted to knit one now! Would need to find suitable yarn...hmm...quite fancy varigated blue and green.

Hmmm I think it might :hihi:
Or I might branch out and try something different.

Just looked at the Oasis yarn that Jules mentioned and it looks very nice. I'm sure you'll be ok with your 99PDK though, I've heard you're good at substituting yarns. Do let me know how you get on :heyhey:
littleblue 16-02-2007, 13:30 It isn't critical to use the right yarn, just add on a bit or take a bit off the pattern. Its a scarf. I'll survive :P
Promise to show you when i've made one. Errr give it a few months!

I've got a couple of balls of Oasis and I've knitted Clapotis using the LL Lion & Lamb suggested by the pattern. The Oasis is rather like a thin tape yarn; it's quite a bit finer than the Lion & Lamb, and not as lofty.
I haven't compared the gauge of the two yarns (off the top of my head, the Oasis has a finer gauge, I think), but my initial instinct from feeling the two yarns is that if you use Oasis, your Clapotis could be a bit smaller than the pattern describes. It'll also be more summer-weight and not as 'cuddly' as the Lion & Lamb.
Although the Oasis is soy silk, when I knitted a few rows with it, it felt almost like working with cotton, except that the Oasis was quite slippy and had a sheen.

We did a Clapotis knitalong back in August :) . Here's the link (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=130785) to the thread. I don't think the links to photographs in my post are working, as when I sorted my Photobucket account out, I deleted a lot of files and haven't got around to putting them back yet.
Clapotis is a lovely pattern. Once you get in to it, it knits up really quickly too.
I'm planning on knitting a scarf and some gloves from the Louisa Harding 'A Gathering of Roses' accessories collection. Haven't been able to track down the Impressions and Kimono Ribbon yarn in the colours I want yet though.
At the moment I'm knitting a blue sweater with purple twist for my friend and meanwhile I started with a cardigan for myself, red and other colours. One that I can use as a kind of coat on colder spring days.
Al Bethere 16-02-2007, 18:10 After the knitting forum meeting I had to try socks. So went to The Wool Baa and got my yummy yarn. Just need some bamboo needles,as Jill was out them.
Going to start on metal ones, hope they are not too slippy.
Ooh thanks for the advice on the SWTC yarn. I've done one in the Lorna's Laces and in Hipknits silk. I was going to do this one in Hipknits, but for reasons i won't go into here, I had to change my mind. I'd heard other people say they'd used the Oasis yarn.

Oh, well if others have used Oasis with out trouble, it should be alright :) . When you have the two yarns next to each other, they do look very different, and I'm sure you'll get a different feel to the Clapotis than with the LL. I'd be interested to see what it turns out like with a lighter, less lofty yarn. I reckon a yarn of the weight of the Oasis would make a nice summer shawl.
I must admit that I wasn't a fan of the Oasis myself, as I don't really like the tape effect. Also, it has a 'woven' look to it, which makes it look a little manufactured, if you see what I mean.

Which pattern are you going for? Are you going to start off with a basic stocking stitch pattern? I used the free pattern that came with the Regia sock wool from McA.
Have you knit with DPNs before? If not, I'd suggest waiting for the bamboo needles. As a beginner, I found the metal DPNs not only slippy, but on the heavy side too. When I was getting used to the needles, I found that the lightness and grippiness of the bamboo DPNs meant that the stitches tended to remain on the needles. I found that the weight and slippiness of the metal ones tended to mean that if I had to let go of a needle completely, the entire needle slipped away, leaving a needle's worth of stitches free in mid air  :hihi: .

Got loads of bamboo ones now! Bring the metal ones back and part-ex 'em for the bamboo!
Aww...think i might be going off the idea now....
Is that Jules I see on her bicycle, pedalling backwards??!!:hihi:

LOL Sorry! Don't let my dislike of the yarn put you off. It does have a nice silky feel to it, and the colour variegation is lovely. You might like it a lot more than me when it arrives. See what it looks like in a swatch :) .

Five pairs in three weeks?! Wow! That's good going :) . Which patterns did you use?
There's a 'sticky thread' at the top of the Knitting Group's main page showing you how to post links to your photographs. You need to have made five posts before you can post a link, though.
Are you going to set up a blog site for your knitting? A few people on here have blogs set up (there are links to them in the recommended links thread).
sheelagh 17-02-2007, 17:40 hi hecate, pattern I used was beginners sock for double pointed needles plain and simple one, it took me a while to figure out the turning of the heel, but got there in the end..lol
as for web site, it will be blog of some sort, this will be all new to me though lol lol so I will give it a go though and see wat develop
knitbird 19-02-2007, 18:51 I bought a pair of baby blue corduroy Mary Jane shoes today for £3 (New!!), they look quite dull at the mo, so I'm going to crochet various motifs in leftover 4ply cotton and sew them on. Luckily my leftovers seem to go with the colour of the shoes.
I'm also going to crochet some coasters with the noro daria I bought from Jill at the group meeting, and may cast on for Butterfly when I get brave enough.
Apart from that I've only got the yarn for around 5 projects knocking around.
I do reckon, Littleblue, that you've got the biggest stash in Sheffield. Do you actually need your central heating?;)

Oooh I don't know about that anymore. I've been a knitting/crocheting devil and been getting through it!! Saying that...no I don't think I need central heating ;) Just curl up in the wool balls :hihi:
Might need to chat to you about some wool ;)
