I love hearing about everyones experiences, I'll tell you mine.

24th June 2003 Birth of Bailey

I got admitted at 7.30 as I was 10 days overdue.
I had to wait for a bed to become free, by the time one did it was around 10am. I was put on the fetal monitor for an hour then the induction pessary was put in and a further hour of monitoring on the fetal monitor. Not much was happening so I went for a walk round, had some lunch and then returned back to the ward.
A second pessary was given, and a third. The third finally took hold and contractions were coming thick and fast. They were VERY painful as we were back to back.

At just after 11pm I felt the urge to push, the midwives came in and got me on the bed. Legs in the air I started to push, but something was wrong, nothing was happening. The midwife shouted for the Obs on duty who came running in. I was put in stirrups and a venthouse came out. Unbeknown to me, the cord was wrapped around Bailey's neck 3 times which was stopping the oxygen getting to him and preventing him descending.

The Obs gave me an episiotomy and managed to cut the cord from the inside. Bailey was deilvered at 11.45 exactly and had an APGAR of 3. He wasn't breathing and was blue. The midwife rushed him away from me and tried everything to make him cry. It felt like an eternity before he started, but eventually he did.

Bailey is now a healthy 3 1/2 year old boy.

Awwww he's gorgeous hun! My first birth was a pretty normal one, I was 5 days overdue but she came naturally with no problems weighing 8 lb 3 oz. My son was jsut plain old awkward! I was 13 days overdue with him, so had to be induced, I was admitted in hospital at 9am and they put the pessary in at about 10 am. Nothing happened until about 4pm when they broke my waters. He too was with his back to mine so I had to get on all fours while they turned him. Needless to say at 7:58pm he was born a very healthy 8lb 14oz! My daughter is now 5 and my son is 10 months and getting more mobile by the day!!!!!

Maddison Hannah born 8th june 2006.

I had a trouble free pregnancy, at 36 weeks i went for a normal midwife appointment and my BP was up and my urine was plus 2, so she asked me to go for a check up at jessops, when i got there my BP had risen and my urine was plus 3, so they kept me in, the next morning i had swollen up and was plus 4. i am a size 6 shoe, my hubby is an 8 and i couldnt get his shoes on as i was so swollen! i was admitted on the friday then on the following wed aft i was given a pessary but nothing happened and as it was so busy they didnt persue it till the following day, so they broke my waters at 11 am thurs, i had gas and air and Maddison was born with no problems at 3.10.

wow claire, that sounds terribly frightening!

Joshua Gary born 12th May 2005

I was told at 32 weeks I had a terrible iron levels and was put on iron tablets but I had just had enough. I was pale (more than normal) couldn't go to the loo (sorry!) and was so tired all I did was sleep all day.

I made an Obs appointment at 33 weeks and sat in his office and demanded he induce me cos I couldn't go on anymore. I was there with my bag packed ready to go.

He finally gave in and gave me a date for 37 weeks and 4 days, thursday 12th May, I was like eeeeeeek, if I go over it'll be friday 13th baby and I am terribly superstitious. He wouldn't budge on date so from then on I started drinking raspberry leaf by the bucket load.

The day came got admitted at 7.30 am waited for a bed ad all that. I had a pessary, got monitored, had another and away we were. I was in labour for a total of 1hr 33 minutes, waters broke 2 pushes and out he came.

Joshua was 5lb 9oz, Bailey was 6lb 9oz. I dread to think what Josh would have weighed if I went full term!

I had a terrible time with my first daughter. I was ten days overdue, so was admitted to be induced. I ended being in labour for 12 hours, by which time I was exhausted,so they had to use forceps. She weighed a very healthy 9lbs 14 oz. I had lost a lot of blood and was in hospital for a week. They wanted me to have a blood transfusion but I refused, as back in 91, the aids thing was really big.

My son came next, 4 yrs later, and he was a doddle, I hardly felt a thing, and he weighed the same as my daughter!

Lastly my third daughter arrived in 98. I was admited to hospital as I was bleeding, but went in to labour whilst there. I remember being in agony whilst waiting for the doc to finish his tea and toast, and give me an epidural.

Once the epidura lkicked in .it was a breeze, and my little girl was born weighing 9lbs 4 0z.

I wonder if you feel differently about birth stories after you have given birth to a lovely healthy child. Currently pregnant for the first time, I am amazed by the number of friends who feel it is helpful to share their 'all the things that went wrong during the birth and how traumatic it was' stories. Frankly, it just makes me a little nervous......maybe thats just me

Yeah I guess you are right. Women in asia squeeze them out in rice fields and all that (or perhaps that is just an urban myth but it helps!) :)

well, i had a fantastic birth, and despite the gory details (such things as tearing sound awful, but you honestly don't feel them at the time, and they're so minor in comparison to your changed life that you just don't notice them after, either), i can say that when the midwife asked me 10 minutes after the placenta slopped out whether that would put me off the next child, i replied that it hadn't bothered me at all, but would she mind helping me stand up and walk to the loo (centre of gravity had moved, balance was off!). it'd be going too far to say i enjoyed it, but a couple of paracetamol and a couple of codeine combined with a lovely warm birthing pool made for a very trauma-free experience. don't worry!

it's quite shocking how many people want to tell you horror stories, isn't it? but like i say, mine was fantastic. lizzmobile might be a fantastic person to pm if you'd like some reassurance - do a search for some of her posts from about 6-7 months ago when she announced the surprise birth of her TWO babies.

Yes I had a hard time with my first born, but it was just one day out oif my life,so it didn't put me off at all. As for the week in hospital, I had my own room, lovely meals, and someone to help with baby if I needed it.

Ah well I have to oblige with a twin tale:
Twingle 1 & 2 born 28th October 2005
C'section booked for 1st November as both girls were breech and no room to turn, went home, agreed we would do our best to get house up to scratch (had moved 6 weeks previously and not finished unpacking as I was as big as the house anyway) and totally unpacked before the section.
SO I was unpacking in the bedroom, emptying the last boxes of clothes and I felt a bit odd, it was indescribable, just a weird sensation. I had a lay down for a few minues then went back to putting clothes away and all of a sudden I was utterly convinced I had wet myself. This was 6.15 pm.
Twingle 1 had decided she was on her way so off we went to Jessops for an emergency section. The owman we spoke to on the labour ward was clearly unimpressed to see us and very busy but they didn't really have a choice.
They admitted us and because I had eaten we had to wait a few hours, during which time I had 2 contractions.
Went into theatre, I was in tears and quite afraid but it was painless, just odd and I could feel them under my ribcage when they went to fetch Twingle 2 who retreated and had to be fetched out by forceps.
Apgars of 8 and 9 I think and both back with us pretty quickly. Stitched up and in recovery just under 90 minutes later.
Girls born at 10.13 and 10.15 pm weighing 5lb 8 ox and 5.lb 9.5 oz, exactly 3 weeks early - so classed as full term.
Nearly passed out next morning when I went for a shower but soon recovered, sore for a couple of weeks but I've got a really tidy scar and two lovely girlies. I remember being very afraid that I would split the wound again and that they were taking the stitches out too early but as the wound healed it all got too tight so they had to take them out as planned anyway.
My girls were fine and we left hospital after 5 days.
I'm glad they picked their own birthdays.

Both mine were quick and easy.

Daughter was 5 days before due date. Had a 'show' and a few twinges so went to hospital. Got there at 5:45am and had her at 6:52am. Very quick and no pain relief.

Son was 5 weeks premature. Waters broke at 2:45am. Got to the hospital and they wanted to give me a section as he was prem and I was huge! I refused. By the time they had finished messing about and got me to the labour ward he was ready to pop out but they didn't believe me. I refused to lay down and kept upright and walking about. I told them his head was there, they looked and panicked as he was! Second stage labour was 7 minutes and they were totally unprepared, no birthing pack ready or anything! They told me I had to 'hang on' and I managed to get on the bed and bobs your uncle, out he popped, a whopping 7lb 14oz, not bad for 5 weeks prem! Again, no pain relief either.

See, it's not all doom, gloom and loads of pain. Top tip : Stay upright as long as possible. Gravity really does work wonders!

Hmmm...I'll start by telling you that they used my son to scare the women coming into hospital for their prenatal ward visit, lol...And it worked - at least one went into labour.

I am not tall (5ft), and was as round as I am high. Rumour had it that I was either expecting a hidden twin or had carried him way over term and he was too comfy to pop out. The midwives just said that I am an excellent incubator, lol.

I kept insisting that he was very big (seemed obvious to me!) and they finally took me in for a scan a week or so before I was due. All the time the midwife had been saying he was head down, engaged and ready to go. I fully blame her if my child is slightly funny in the head because we thought we were smacking his little bottom all that time...
The sonographer sucked her teeth and finally said, "well, hun, I'm pregnant. And I hope my baby doesn't get this big...I think he's going to get up and walk out of here." They then informed us that he was breech and had no way of turning and he wouldn't squeeze out of me anyway. So they tried to book me in for an urgent c-section that very day, but they didn't have any capacity for a week...so they sent me home and told me I mustn't go into labour under any circumstances (!!??!!) because if I did, it would be an emergency situation. (Which didn't make me stressed and likely to go into labour at all, duh!).

Thankfully, this little guy had absolutely no intentions of leaving his nice cosy nest, so a week later I was having a needle stuck in my back (sorry, but AGONY!! "Just bend forward a bit more, love", "I have an elephant stuck in my stomach, how the h*** do you expect me to do that??") and the staff from the local comedy revue - they were hilarious, bless them - cut me open, extricated a (silent) HUGE baby, whisked him away because he was 'in distress', then whisked him right back because it turned out he was actually just p-ed off at being pulled from his home.
He was 10lb 13oz.

After that it's all a haze of morphine. Apparently I gave them a ticking off for not showing us how to do a nappy and bath him (which I already knew, lol)... about fifteen minutes after they'd finished showing us how to do a nappy and bath him. I remember neither of these things. I liked morphine!

After six days in hospital (he wasn't latching on too well, but he was hardly going to starve to death was he???) I told them I was going to make a rope of sheets and climb over the wall if they didn't let me out.

I would do just about anything to avoid having a c-section again. I didn't want it, I found it painful and horrible afterwards (no-one tells you about the stockings!) and because it was such a big thing, and I so didn't want it, it looks as though I may have suffered a touch of PTSD afterwards. However, i realise that many women find it far better than labour etc. and don't seem to suffer anywhere near as badly as I did. Saying all that, if that was the only way i could have a baby again, I wouldn't hesitate (I just hope it isn't).

Everything, absolutely everything, is worth it in the end, though. A million billion trillion times over.

Ok, here goes.

Ewan was born by elective C-section 31Dec 2001. He went breach 2 weeks before due date, so Mrs Surfin was booked in. Apart from the C section, everything went fine and Mrs Surfin and Ewan home 5 days later.

Now with Faye Emily, there's a story to be told. Mrs Surfin had bleeds throughout the pregnancy and at 28 weeks(ish) she was admitted to Jessops. She was diagnosed with a condition called placaenta previa. Due to its location, Jessops staff were worried that she could have a major bleed at any time and so she was kept in as a precaution. This was through Christmas (Xmas dinner for 6 in the conservatory room on Rivelin ward was different)and Ewan's 4th birthday. Not a great time.

At 34.3 weeks, it was decided to play safe and get Faye out! Mrs Surfin had a whole host of dotors and nurses in with her, and we were warned that in worse case scenario she might have to have a hysterectomy. I was sat outside theatre in my scrubs ready to go, and sat and sat and sat. Mrs Surfin went in to theatre at 09.00, and all I saw was the "runner" coming out for more fluids and blood. They eventually had race over to RHH blood bank for more blood. She was literally bleeding to death.

In total she had 27 units of blood, plasma, fluid, of which 13 were blood.

To save her life, extreme I know, but true, she had the hysterectomy. Faye weighed in at 4lb 14 and although was slow to get going was fine relatively quickly. She had a week on special care.

Mrs Surfin came out of theatre at around 2.30 and was rushed over to RHH Intensive care. I finally got to see her at 6pm that evening although she was completely out of it. I spent the next 4 hours running between Jessops and RHH Intensive Care to check on the pair of them.

Mrs Surfin was moved back to Jessops HDU the next evening and had 4 days in there followed by another week back on ward. It turned out that she had a condition called placaenta accretia, and that the placaenta had grown through her womb and into her bladder, and had taken on a "sticky" type form, so that it fragmented when trying to remove it.

Mrs Surfin needed a further op in June last year to tidy things up. It was a very scary time, but I'm glad to say that Mrs Surfin and Faye and both spot on now.

The Jessops and RHH ICU staff were brilliant throughout!

when i had my daughter almost 20yrs ago,my husband and i were at one of those antenatel clinics,us and about 10 other couples were sat watching a birthing film when i suddenly thought i had wet myself so excused myself and went to the loo, once there realised it must have been my waters that had broke, hubby fetched midwife to confirm it,next min i was on labour ward but she wasnt born until the following day at 5.40pm,i tried to have the gas and air but hated it,they kept saying the anethatist was on his way,but he didnt get there on time so i just had the pethadine,i was in so much pain i swore i would never have another baby, but i did,9 yrs later though

Hi Claire

I was set to go into theatre if all was going well, and was in the scrubs ready. After about 30 minutes it became pretty clear that I wasn't going to go in. I had a chap from the theatres sat looking after me. Chaps name was Ken. Not very talkative but kept me informed and full of tea!

Mrs S had 3 surgeons working on her and 2 senior anaethetists. When they were sending out for more blood I knew in my heart that she was likely to have to have the hysterectomy, but when it came to the crunch, and was explained that it needed doing then or she'd die, I was pretty shocked. You can't do anything but agree.

As I was sat outside theatre, the crash team came charging past, and I thought that this was for Mrs S. It was 10/15 minutes later when I first saw Faye that it was explained that it had been for her as she was struggling to breath being early. I finally saw Mrs S around 6 hours after going in for surgery and it was pretty upsetting.

I was accompanied by one of the theatre team across to ICU and she sat with me for 3 hours till I could see Mrs S.

As I said, both doing are really well know, and Faye is catching up to her peers, although she looks really small in comparison.

1st baby(b) went to be induced at 38wks, small for dates, 2cm dilated when got there, given pesery nowt happened, put on drip to start contractions, nowt happened, turned drip up started getting contractions told midwife she said" you'll be hours yet" so gave me petadine.. then asked me to hop on bed so could see if dilated anymore, was fully dilated and asked me to push but i was too out of it to do that, pulled a mirror up so i could see what i was doing:gag: born 4hrs later with cord firmly round neck and spent 2wks in scbu as wouldnt feed
2nd baby(j) went to be induced at 38wks, 2cm dilated again, broke my waters at lunchtime, 3 hrs later he flew out like a rocket, remember midwife saying dont push as got arm up and may tear, but too late (it was middle of a contraction) had stitches.
3rd baby(o) found i got pre eclempsia at 39wk during routine check so rushed me to labour ward(didn't tell me why as scared it would raise blood pressure more) 2cm again, gave pesery (nowt happened again) so broke waters then counted down from 8 to 0(took 8secs to fully dialate:hihi: )then said push took 50mins little blighter keeped sliding back up when contraction stopped.
4th baby(i) started naturaly at home, got to hosp 6cm, at 8pm, 1130pm started with gas and air, went to loo saw blood, (got told not to push:hihi:) went back to room got on all 4s another puff of g+a (midnight, was 8cm), and felt waters go shouted midwife, and head was there only had 1 more push and she was out, at 12:05am:clap:

surfinjim your mrs had a real bad time with it and lucky to be here.

i thought i had a bad time with my 1st and could have died. i had high blood pressure and he was 4 days late and they had me in to start me off as they could not leave me any longer with how high my blood pressure was.on the way to the hospital on the bus i went flying onto the floor as the bus had to brake sharp but it did not start me off.this was nearly 34 years ago

they broke my waters on the friday morning about 9ish and put me on a drip to help the contractions which started within a few minutes and was told that was good as it could have taken a lot longer. was took onto the ward and i got in a panic as with the contractions my drip came out of my arm and so did blood
late morning i was taken to the delivery room and given pethadine as the contractions was getting really bad and i was cursing my hubby then and saying no more. but the pethadine was really good and i fell asleep and woke up to a strange feeling that i wanted to push and the midwife came in and my son was delivered just after 2.30 pm.

that evening though my blood pressure had gone sky high. i had an headache and was putting cold clothes to my head then in the night it took worse and i was delerious remember them taking me out of the word and me just moaning and them giving me an injection was took to a private room later on that day on the saturday at dinner time i just so a hazy shadow of my hubby stood there with roses in his hands as i had told him that i wanted some roses when i had the baby.

the next i knew it was monday morning i dont remember anything of the last 2 days i was told that my blood pressure had gone dangerously high and had to be sedated until it came back down. the inside of my arms were severly bruised with the drips i had on, one for the contractions then the one when i was sedated.

i was in then till the saturday my blood pressure was going down but it was not down enough i was very depressed being in hospital and wanted to go home and i promised the doctor that i would rest as there was my hubby and my mum to look after me, he decided to let me home but i had to go back a few days later to have my blood pressure checked he thought it was not going down as quick due to me being depressed and in hospital. the matron thought the doctor was not in his right mind and told me so she said i was not fit enough to go home i was a sick girl.

i went back a few days later and my blood pressure was fine.it did not put me off i had another 3 boys

my second son he was 4 days late but i went into labour myself.i was taken into hospital the night before was a false alarm they said they would keep me in as they were sure that i would start within a few hours or so.

i started in labour the next day in the early afternoon on the sunday by the time they brought tea round i did not fancy it my contraction were getting stronger but i held on going to the delivery room until my hubby came at visiting time and we went down together

i didnt have any pethadine this time just gas and air. the pains were realy strong and they said the pethadine would not work till after the baby was born so i could not have any.i felt like he was ripping me in two and it felt more scary than having my first. i felt more comfortable laying on the edge of the bed and the nurse kept moving me back onto bed and telling my hubby to move me back onto bed but i just kept telling him to leave me alone and snapping at him.

he kept looking at his watch on time i just snapped at him go home as i felt like i hated him at the moment and didnt want to see him , but he had to go as my mum was looking after the other lad and he was 4.

i kept telling midwife i wanted to push but she said i wasnt ready she told me my baby was eager to be born but i was not ready thats why i was feeling like i was. he was born just before 11 that night weighing 8lb 1 oz and was little and fat with these big fleshy cheeks which everyone that came to see me commented on, especially next day when my hubby came to see me at hospital his brother brought him, hubby came to sit with me first and his brother went to look at baby and he said to him come here and have a look at this babys cheeks he couldnt beleive how big they were

i was in hospital 6 days and everything was ok with this one

with son number 3 nearly 5 years after no 2 things were different there

he was a day early went into hospital on the wednesday morning my contraction were coming every 10 mins by dinner time, then i would miss one i wanted pethadine as with not having it with my 2nd i wanted to make sure i was getting it this time but at first she said my contractions were not consistant to give me any and i could stop. i told her i was definately in labour and i was having this baby today

she finaly gave me the pethadine and i was glad, my hubby came to hospital and he stayed with me all through this time with the first one he couldnt it was not allowed and with the second i dont think he wanted to and it was late at night.

by the time my hubby came i was not on this planet i just turned over touched his arm to let him know that i knew he was here then i turned away and went to sleep. the nurse had to ask me if i wanted to push and i was that out of it i just said just a minute while i think. and i said yes i think i do

he was born just after 4.30 pm and my hubby thought it was wonderful i didnt realy feel a thing everything just felt like a dream.

the next day i had to be put in an isolation room as my tempreture had gone very high and they thought i had an infection but i had not they couldnt understand why it had gone up high.

maybe its the pethadine as i was not well after the ones i had pethadine with but i still prefer to have it than just gas and air

my last son came nearly 9 years after the 3rd one theres nearly 18 years between him and first and it was much different in hospital as you had to stay in bed a day after giving birth or nearly a day but with him it was about an hour before i could have a bath ,great

he was the only one that my waters broke themselfs the other 3 my water had to be broke at the hospital. he was 15 days early my waters broke late monday evening and i was taken into hospital about 1 ish on the tuesday morning. they told me to have a bath said it may ease the pain or help with contractions my contractions got worse.

i was taken down to the labour ward around 3 - 4 ish in the night as my pains were getting strong and more frequent but they had to take me in a wheel chair as i could not walk with the pain and the closeness to the contractions

i could not have pethadine [ wasnt pleased i like pethadine the pain is easier with it] they said my baby would not be long born with a hour or two they said so i thought it should be here before 6 but no the baby needed glasses he got caught he was trying to get out the wrong way couldnt find his way out they were trying to manouver him into the right direction. [he did need glasses when he was 3]

he didnt arive while just after 7.30 that morning. i had to stop pushing, the chord was around his neck then when they said i could push he just shot out so quick and they had to take him away for oxygen. but he was ok he did have speach problems when he was little and had to have speech therapist and i always think it was because he was not breathing when he was born.

the last one was 16 years ago
thats all, i will be on my way now [didnt she go on] lol

think i must have subconsciously known my baby was coming as id shaved my legs the night before!(one of my fears throughout was having hairy legs while giving birth-weird i know)
On due date had period type pain from 3am so bath and text my friends mum in cyprus (theyre 2hr ahead and she gets up early!).
Then went back to bed and sobbed until hubby woke up. He was an absolute doll bless him. Called the hosp several times "have a bath, take 2 paracetemol". Ate a few bourbons and cried with pain.
Finally got into car to go to hosp when they said i could at 2pm, was sick outside the university-so embarassing. Got out of car contracting and scared a lady having a cigarette outside (hehe!). Missed the first two assessment rooms and struggled down to labour suite.
Had injections in leg-didnt feel the difference. MW broke waters-while i apologised for the wetness on the bed. Used the tens machine-pants.
Some lady brought me lunch-are you crazy???
Had another injection-still couldnt feel difference. MW got me on the cushion and passed me gas/air which i threw away as it didnt work!(lots of apologies after and chocolates brought in!!):D
Sat on bed had proper gas/air and waited for epi to be put in. Screamed at the man doing it as he took ages(apologies again!) and then felt fine!
Hubby went for a kebab, babys heart rate dropped-things got bit hazy then.
I remember begging for a drink but was only allowed to suck icecubes.
Babys HR dropped again and they tried turning him the right way before i went into surgery room.
I remember the male nurses talking about Terry Pratchett and me feeling absolutely hammered and not recognising hubby
Mo came out with help of ventose (said there was no wayof section after billion hrs labour)
No heartrate no breath so they whisked him of to special care and sort of left me in the dark
Horrible really they let hub see him for a sec after they got him back to life and sent me to a horrid room then sent smelly daddy home. Felt so alone it was awful.
Then the doc who worked on Mo brought in some photos and i cried and was eventually let up to see him and cried some more.
Whole things was about 27hrs ish-not the best labour/birth, but not the worst.:D

i had a breeze of a pregnancy, went 8 days over EDD.

hubby came home at 7.30am after a 12 hr evening shift he woke me up as he got in bed and thats when i realised i was in labour, contractions were pretty slow to start off with so i left it till about 12 noon to tell hubby i was in labour and asked him to take me to my mothers so he could sleep and mum could look after me till i was ready for hospital.

on the drive down to my mums (5 mins) i had 4 contractions...hubby started to panic....foot down...straight to hospital.

i have to laugh at his over the top reaction as he screeched up to the entrance ran round the car and man handled me into the reception, all very dramatic while i was still pretty calm as the contractions had slowed back down.

i arrived at the hospital already 6cms dialated. all went pretty smoothly until around 4pm where my bloodpressure shot up and the room was suddenly filled with about 10 strangers, at this stage i was convinced i needed to empty my bowels so i went to the toilet, to the annoyance of the midwife who was telling me it was the baby baring down...of course it was but i was convinced i just needed a poo!
after about 20 mins of being locked in the toilet and no poo coming i wiped myself (sorry for being crude) i noticed a bulge... i struggled back to the room and was told the amniotic sac could be seen and the baby was making an appearance.
i got on the bed where the midwife snipped the sac to release the waters and my daughter was born 9 mins later she slipped into the world very easy and all hubby had to do was use a babywipe to wipe the sweat from my face and back.
hubby was handed our baby while i was passing what i thought was a suprise second baby, this being my first baby and being in a bit of a whirlwind i didnt realise i was passing the placenta:hihi: .

i managed to give birth naturally without any drugs.

i now have my beautiful Freya who is my world. her picci is my avatar shes now 4 going on 21

My first baby was born on the 14 november.

I went in to hospital at 1 in the morning found out i was 5cm and got a bed straight away, had abit of petherdine and he was born at 6;07.

Found out i was preganent again, due on the 20 april. I thought cause the 1st one was great i would have this one at home, and thats when the fun started.

I started having contractions at about 4 in the morning so i called my sis to come. 3 o'clock the next day he still wasnt here but i was in pain so i called my midwife and she came out but wouldnt give me an internal for some reason she said they werent strong enough. So she went. My contractions were all over the place from 6 mins to 2 mins back up to 15 mins. Then at about 12 at night i was in pain so i thought id ring for a midwife to bring me gas and air and to see how far i was but she said the midwife was at another home birth and id have to wait. So it got to 1 and i phoned again (still in pain) and they said they would have to send another midwife from the other side of sheffield. My sis was abit scared cause i wanted to push. Just in time she came did an internal and said to me push now! No gas and air cause she had to phone for it and there wasnt time, my hubby missed it cause he was up stairs and the midwife just got there. I had him at 2;20. Then the placenta came... as she pulled it out it ripped all over the floor (as i had him in a chair). She said it was cause my contractions were all over the place. So i nearly had to go in hospital any way. But i dont mind cause i have 2 beautiful boys.

I never made it to the last ante natal class as I was having the practical via an emergency section at 36 weeks he was taken into SCBU at Northern for four weeks he is now a teenager. Sad bit a stillborn son at 38 weeks delivered naturally. ( awful would not wish on worst enemy|)
Then just over 10 months later I had a daughter natural delivery at 37 weeks which was a planned induction. She too ended up in SCBU and was the biggest and noisest child they had in at that time. Now 9 years on she is still noisy.

well, for anyone whos interested here goes...

she was due on 20th august, got to 24th and i was trying anything to get her out. after some arkward sex, when OH fell asleep after  i started having little pains. went to toilet about 20 times in half an hour and he was still asleep! went home again in morning , still with little pains and my mum was asking if they were getting stronger or 2 minutes apart yet!? had to go to a hospital appointment later that day as it was a week after EDD, she scanned me and said there wasn't much water around baby so i would have to be induced, put me on a mnitor and asked if i was having any pains as contraction number was getting quite high, i said yes, but being all patronising she said 'oh no, you'll know when they're real contractions'!!

anyways after monitoring she said i'll go make you an appointment for induction in next few days (cue panic of thinking, oh god i'm actually going to have a baby soon!!) she came back in room and said 'can you get back here for 4??' this was at 1 in afternoon, she meant in 3 hours!!(cue big big panic!)

anyway, came back at 4, they didn't even look at me til 5 and sent OH home! i was not impressed! she decided that my pains were contractions after all, they decided to believe me!!, and so not induce me, she did an internal and it broke my waters, that was about half 5. then left me on a monitor til i called for them at 11 cause i was in pain!!!

finally got moved down to labour ward and she said i was 6 cm, took her an hour to phone OH and tell him to come back, he couldn't drive either so all this was in taxis! i had some gas and air and then the midwife started panicking a bit and scaring me, she went and brought in about 10 others to come and look at me!! they were going to do a c-section cause babys HR was low, then went back up so they were just doing a blood test then went back down so c-section, then went back up..they all calmed down and it suddenly went down to about 30 and they just kind of grabbed me and said, we're about to do an emergency c-section, is that ok(like i was going to say no!) i remember seeing a woman in a bed that was just about to go in a room for c-section and they had to wheel her back out so i could go in (sorry) and that was it, i remember a man saying something about a catheter, someone strapping my arms down, someone else taping my eyes, and someone asking if i had false teeth(i was only 19 for gods sake)

alltogether a very scary time.

next thing i know i woke up and looked to my left, all i could see wa a little window with a blue blind and i was so confused as to where i was, then it all suddenly came back.! first thing i said was 'what is it?' lol

he'd been sat with her for 2 hours and nooone had told him what to do, so he just sat still holding her til i woke up lol!

Hi everyone!

1st baby (boy - 8 days late) I started with contractions about 9am thurs morning, by 4pm they were strong & regular & painful so I got a taxi to hospital only to be told I wasn't far enough along to have any pain relief. At 8pm i'd progressed enough to have an epidural, after which I slept off & on until 5am next morning when midwife told me I was nearly ready to start pushing. After a few checks I started pushing but couldn't feel a think thanks to epidural and he was born at 5.55am, and I was left thinking that childbirth was a breeze!

2nd baby (girl - 12 days late) Started with contractions 11am so my husband decided to drop me at my mums and go to Meadowhall for new trainers!! At 1pm I had to phone him to come and take me to hospital. When I got there I was 4cm so I got an epidural pretty much straight away. She was born at 7.40pm and yet again I'm thinking this is easy!

3rd baby (boy - 13 days late) This one was not budging! Went in on a Sunday morning to be induced, feeling quite nervous about it but confident that it'd be just like other 2 and once i'd got epidural i'd be able to sit back and relax until pushing time. Wasn't I mistaken! I was given pessary at 10am and had to lay for an hour. Then I was taken up to ward and told to walk about a bit and see if anything happens. At 2pm I started getting mild contractions and by 2.30pm they were every 3 mins. Midwife examined me and said 'you're only 1 cm'. At 3pm I was took back down to labour ward and was told they'd break my waters to try and move things along. I was in a lot of pain once they did and along came the lovely anethetist to pop my epidural in. It went in at 2nd attempt and did **** all. I finally gave birth at 6.35pm. The headache I had after was like no other. The anethetist had punctured the sack of spinal fluid and I had to have a blood patch to stop the leak. A week later the headache was back and I needed another (my back was still sore from the three needles I'd already had in it the week before).

Had i known before hand i'd never have had the epidural 3rd time around but the first two were trouble free so I presumed this one would be. I still can't stand to touch my back where the needles went in. I wouldn't tell anyone not to have one though because they're great when they do work I was just unlucky.

I've got 3 beautiful children though so i've nothing to complain about (well, nearly nothing!)

Think I was a bit naive about going into labour! We couldn't get on any of the courses offered as they were all fully booked so I just listened to all the advice on offer (Friends & Forumers) and decided to just see what happened.
All through my pregnancy everyone I met commented on how big I was, was it twins etc...(not amusing towards the end!!) With two weeks to go my midwife refferred me to Jessops as she was concerned about the amount of fluid I was retaining and the size of the baby. Jessops were not hugely helpful told me I was having a good size baby and sent me back to the midwife. Fed up of hearing about a good size baby, asked what exactly that size is? About 9lbs. Not huge I know but I was pre-pregnancy a size 6-8 and wasn't sure I would be able to do it! (Crazy hormonal panicking!!) No sign of baby towards due date couldn't get an appointment at clinic for the following week when I would have been 5 days over (baby due on 2/2 next available appointment with mw 14/2) Allocated a home visit on 5/2 somehow got 'lost' in the system, feeling a bit narky my mum said I was the stroppiest she had ever seen me in 28 years! Went to bed in a sulk on the Monday night, woke up at 12:30 went back to sleep, woke up at 2:00 felt a strange 'pop'. Waddled off to the toilet hmmm have my waters broken? Wasn't sure as I appreciate it happens differently for everyone, woke my partner he wasn't sure either. Phoned the hospital...Yes that's sounds right any pain? Nothing serious, monitor it for an hour have a couple of paracetemol. Ok put the kettle on cup of tea and biscuits...1 hour later think I need to go to the hospital phoned them to tell them we were coming -2 outside took a while to defrost the car put my wheatbag in the microwave got to the hospital at 4:00am. Couldn't sit still no pain just a bit uncomfy, asked for pain relief forgot to have paracetemol, gave me two cocodomol (sp). Decided to examine me as I wouldn't sit still long enough to have the monitor on...Fully dilated ready to go (how could I not know?!?) into the labour suite, the lovely lady who took me down was laughing about the cocodomol not being much use! In the labour suite by 4:45am Poppy born at 6:57am weighing in at 8lb13oz. Had some gas & air but oh was laughing as I used it after a contraction and couldn't quite get the hang of it!!

Sorry this was so long but my little angel is asleep (now weighing 10il 11 1/2 oz) perhaps if she had woken up this wouldn't have been so long and you'd all still be awake:hihi:

I love hearing everyone else's stories too and have enjoyed reading this thread. It really underlines how everyone is different!

I've finally decided to tell my first story and maybe if I get round to it I'll return to tell the 2nd and 3rd :)

OK, first pregnancy, didn't really know what to expect. Woke in the middle of the night for the loo - had a show, and felt dull tummy ache. Decided this was it but felt overwhelmingly calm and decided to go back to bed as it was bound to take hours. OH woke as I got back into bed and asked what was up. Calmly responded that I thought the baby was coming (a week early incidentally) and he broke out in a cold sweat - never seen that in anyone before, quite funny really - and asked me what on earth I was doing coming back to bed. "Trying to get some sleep of course" Managed to persuade him to settle down and more or less slept through til morning, just waking for the pains and going back to sleep after.

Around 6am OH finally persuaded me to phone hospital. Pains were then pretty well constant - impossible to time gaps between, so when they asked how far apart the contractions were I just guessed "Oh about every 10 minutes I suppose" as I thought I must be timing things wrong as first labours don't go that fast, do they?? Hospital told me if I could cope ok at home to stay there for a while and come in when contactions closer.

Around 7am OH couldn't stand it any longer and drove me to hospital. Arrived to find I was already 6cm dilated, so straight into the delivery room. Still didn't really need any pain relief but accepted a Tens machine which was so annoying I took it off after a few minutes. Then I got to the gas & air. Yummy stuff - I was totally spaced out, just observing from some distant planet that I was in a considerable amount of pain but not really bothered about it! The rest of the morning is a bit of a blur in consequence! Worst bit was the "crowning" when I remember saying that I couldn't do this any more & midwife responded "Of course you can" in a lovely soothing voice! She was long since due to go off shift but stayed to see me through anyway which I thought was really sweet.

Gorgeous baby daughter was born around midday and first thing I said was "I don't believe it" when this real, tiny living person was placed on my tummy. 13 years later I still haven't got over the wonder of it

Thanks for listening folks!

blimey - not that many people out there with easy birth stories!

I have one boy - Jacob Corey born 14.40 8th June 2004.

No problems at all, none during pregnancy - just a bit of morning sickness and a few cravings .
Waters broke at 1.30am on 8th June, called midwife, she said to call her back if contractions went to less than 5 mins - ended up at hospital by 8.30 am, at which point my OH decided to bugger off in search of a bacon sarnie!
Just had gas and air, and Jacob was delivered stress free in a birthing pool at 14.40 looking like one of the cone heads but covered in goo, weighing 7lbs 3oz.

Oh the only weird thing was that 8th June was actually his due date! bet that doesn't happen often!
I did however also have a student midwife and 2 trainee GP's watching the whole thing as part of their training - they just kept on turning up!
