View Full Version : How much do you feed your cats and what do you feed them?
I've had a search and can't see a thread about this - feel free to merge if there is one mods!
Anyway, just wondering how many packets and / or biscuits do you feed your cats a day. Ours tend to get a bowl of biscuits in the morning plus a packet of food between them and then again in the evening and then there are a few treats like cat milk etc on top, both cats seem to be happy with this.
neeeeeeeeeek 16-02-2007, 08:49 Cat has food down all the time and eats when he wants. He mostly eats Those expensive bloody buscuits from the vet that are supposed to be good for his teeth, he does not eat tinned food. I give him posh pouches as a treat.
mine gets fed when she decides to sit on the windowsill & miaow. some days its 3 bowls of meat in quick succession other ties it has to be the full Monty
meat, biscuits with those pockets, milk and freash cooked meats.
I have 3 cats and they main diet is 2 tins x 2 per day (between them all) of whatever's on offer (mainly morrisons own) as they actually like it. They won't touch Felix and don't like stuff in gravy!! :hihi:
They also have Iams which i leave down and they eat those when they want. Tried other buscuits but they won't eat them
Then i buy expensive pouches for treats, they love the tuna imperial and gourmet ones.
I also get them tinned tuna which they have once every 2 weeks, sardines in tomato sauce and a fresh chicken which we all share.
Oh, and there's all the meals they finish off of mine when i'm not looking, and KFC and hot roast pork sandwiches!! :hihi:
I've been thinking about switching them over to something like Burns or James Wellbeloved a) to reduce cost and b) it's better for them
Anyone got experience of changing them onto a dry complete like Burns and do they like it??
welshchick 16-02-2007, 13:25 most cats need tinned food as well as dry, as they tend not to drink as much water as dogs do, who can happily be fed on dry only. if you cat has ever had crystals he/she will need wet as well as dry food.
dont know much about burns - as the shop i work at doesnt stock it, but in my opinion the best cat foods for quality are JWB, Pro Plan, Royal Canin. feeding on dry food works out much cheaper than feeding on wet, and each of the food mentioned above have feeding guides on the bag so you can see exactly how much you cat needs daily. this needs to be slightly reduced however if you need to add wet food.
hope this helps x
papillon 16-02-2007, 14:15 Dorrie has a Whiskas or Felix kitten pouch in jelly, not gravy (she's very fussy about that!), and a handful of Hills dry food. One bowl in the morning, and one in the evening.
both my cats have regulated how much they eat them selfs, the first kitty was very much an out door cat and ate as much 'Hills Science' as she wanted, never got fat.
My current ball of fluff is a lazy so and so, but she still choses when she wants to eat, and has a bowl of 'Hill Science Diet' stuff all the time, shes a little tubby but has always been 'big boned' or 'cuddly' - but not fat.
i did read somewhere that cats wont over feed like dogs do, but ive seen some fat cats about, so its if your cat will or not.
Jabberwocky 16-02-2007, 14:26 Im almost criminal with the amount I feed my moggy. Each week I buy him a can of salmon and along with that he gets the cat food from sachets (Iams) and he has his cat biscuit things.
Im constantly washing out his dish and throwing the few scraps that are left away so I can fill it again. Along with that, when we have meat, fish or Chicken for meals, I always let him have the scraps, I pull the meat off the bones for him. Plus I buy him cat milk.
He isnt fat because he gets a lot of exercise, but when he gets older hes going to inevitably slow down and thats when the aggro is going to start.
Hobbes is on a meal at 6.30am :suspect: , half a little ramekin of dry urinary cat plan food, then again at 4/5ish and then a little snack before we go to bed. He was a little fatty for a while so this is his new diet and he's gone from a whopping 7.5kg to a slim-jim 5kg.
weenireeni 16-02-2007, 14:48 my cats always have down a bowl of a complete meal type thing like iams, plus a bowl of normal biscuits like ollies, then they get pouches or trays of cat food as and when they want it - usually 1 or 2 a day. and they get slices of wafer thin ham/turkey/chicken. they get through at least three packs a week, its their favourite! then they also get treats of kfc etc. theyre always well fed, but are stll slim!
i did read somewhere that cats wont over feed like dogs do, but ive seen some fat cats about, so its if your cat will or not.
I've had lots of cats and currently have 2 of totally normal weight, and two who have eating as a hobby, so are more generously proportioned. It just goes to show that it's not how much food I put down or when it's available. Some days there's food left, and others there isn't.
My lot eat an entirely dry biscuit diet- half of Merlin's prescription urinary food, and half of James Wellbeloved biscuits of one sort or another.
They have one layer of crunchies in their bowls, one bowl each, twice a day. Of course they choose to gather round one bowl and smack each other in the face rather than eat at their own bowl, but that's their own choice and they all get the food in the end.
I actually worked out the daily total to feed them using the charts on the pack, their weight and the scales to weigh it all out and mark up a measuring cup, to make sure that I wasn't enabling the overweight ones to overeat.
I do feel guilty sometimes when I have a roast dinner or something and they really really want some, but a couple of my cats love the smell of meat but don't eat it, and Arthur will eat it and then be sick, so it's a silly thing to offer them really.
We feed twice a day, 10am and 5pm. They have half a sachet of Felix and a couple of handfuls of Go-Kat each at each meal. Thay are 5 months old at the moment.
They have two dishes in a holder but they always eat from the same bowl, switching sides if they realise they have run up to the wrong food! Funny animals.
SaxonLeigh 16-02-2007, 15:48 pisces has whiskers pouches. he is extreamly fussy, he will only eat the meat (not fish) gravy pouches & he has to have them in a particular order, 3 chicken, 3 lamb, 3 beef & 3 game. i put a thin layer of dry food on the bottom of his bowl then mix in the wet food. i feed him every 12 hours, 8am & 8pm. he also has a bowl of whiskers dry food down all the time.
Moonbird 16-02-2007, 19:16 My three have Morrisons my cat which they seem to really enjoy, and get through one and a half - two tins per day, plus i usually leave a dish of dried for nibbling at (Go-cat and Mycat mixed) which they eat sometimes but not others.
They don't like tuna but do enjoy a tiny bit of sardine in oil when the dogs have them and they also get a bit of chicken when i make it which they love.
The grandad Thomas is slightly portly but the 2 girls are really sleek and all 3 are healthy and have nice coats.
Like a couple of the others, I also give my tiddlers Hills. I keep their bowls filled up (most of the time, when I forget, they are super friendly and I know something's up!). They only have dry buscuits, occassionally a packet of Oh so meaty Whiskas or Sheba Prime cuts. They are slim and nibble throughout the day so I guess they luckily regulate their own weight! They also have a Cat-it water fountain which is really cool!
Talisman1138 17-02-2007, 23:12 I'm guessing that's you Rich! Torin8...sounds familiar hehe
The kittens eating u out of house and home? Til usually has about a packet and a half of wet food a day, and that's on a diet! lol and a few days a week a small bowl of biscuits at night :P
Mozie is on a urinary diet (dry) which means that they all are! The exception is Poppy whose malaligned jaw means that she is supposed to be on wet food (note the words "supposed to be"). They get fed in the morning and at night and whenever Poppy drives us nuts.
Actually, they are all a bit on the tubby side but as they are all different sizes, trying to get them to eat from their own bowl of specially measured out food is a nightmare.
CockneyRebel 18-02-2007, 23:23 I use Hill's Science Formula (Oral Care and Senior Hairball) and Whiskas Senior (Lamb) dry food. Basically, I mix it altogether and fill up two bowls about halfway for my two cats. That tends to get eaten over the course of two days, and then twice a week, they are given some wet food (Sheba deluxe stuff that really spoils them). The male cat gets really excited when I feed him tiny bits of honey roast ham from my sandwiches, and he loves anything that is pork meat. Once a month, they get oily fish.
My female cat is overweight, but the male cat is ideal weight, but I know he eats more.
And, they're basically spoilt rotten.....
I feed my cat 2 pouches a day..
One in the morning, and one at around tea time(ish)
She's always got a dish of biscuits down though so if she gets a bit peckish in between feeds, then she's always got something there..
hypogal1986 22-02-2007, 11:16 My cats are obese they eat 2 bowls of bicuys and 3 packets of whiscars a day
We have 4 cats and they have 2-3 tins between them a day. One in a morning and one in the evening about 6 ish. They have a tin of sardines in tomato sauce between them and they have a bowl of biscuits down all the time. They also have a big water bowl which needs filling up about 2 times a day.
I also get them ham when we go shopping and they have that every week. Its only the no frills stuff but it lasts them about a week as they have some every day. I also buy them the posh cat food now and again and get them the whiskers temptations.
