Anybody got one? Anyone had their dad buy them one for their 2nd birthday knowing they're too young to play it so dad can have a good go for a year or two first? Has anyone actually been that very same dad?

I'm 28 now but for the last year or so I've had the overwhelming desire to get myself a really big long track and set it up in the loft to relieve everyday stress. Is it just me or has anyone else got yearning with similar childhood games they had years ago and now miss terribly?

I'll be getting myself one this Christmas by the way. Just try and stop me. :D

Footnote: Does anyone know why it's called Scalextric by the way? Sorry for the mis-spelling on the title.

I used to have about 3 or 4..

I'm sure my mum and dad still have them in the loft somewhere along with my erm.. :suspect: Trains n' Carriages.. but we are talking 15/16 years ago *cough*

My ex bought me a mini scalextric last christmas for a laugh. Was cool til the batteries ran out. It was only a cheap joke present really but the thought was nice. :)

Onto the real thing soon though. Got to do it now I'm working full time again. :D

Edit: Cheers for the spelling change Max. :D

I have one up the loft but fond memories stop me getting it down. I'm sure it'll be a huge anti-climac if i do; things are never the same once you've grow up.

Tell ya what Chris. When I get mine and have it all set up you can pop over and we'll have a good old race. :D We'll see if it's as fun as we remember.

My best memories of Scalextric was when i rearranged the track so it went under my bed - so much it was beyond belief. :D

Yep, any kind of tunnel was always 'extra' fun. :D Especially if the cars had lights.

Scalextrix are great fun for kids. Much more fun than Train sets. I used to have that Pole position one as a kid where the smoke came out on the starting grid. Anyone recall that?

Pauly
11-10-2004, 19:27
Yep I remember that, never had one like that though. I was about 6-7 when I lost interest in mine and I never expressed an interest in it cos my dad was trying to get me into trains at that point. :)

Did look very cool though. ;)

Yup, my Dad bought me a scalextric when I was young, still got it today bought loads of cars and extra track for it over the years then it got put up in the loft much to my mums delight :D

I had two Triumph TR7's, Rover SD1 (big wedge shape car), loads of metro 6R4's, Porchse 911 with working headlights, Big BMW saloon, Sierra Cosworths with working headlights. Also had one of those Auto Start things with red and green countdown lights.

Recently I've had a scalextric revival and found myself buying bits on ebay, you know those cars or bits of track you couldnt afford when you were a kid.

I had one - it's in the spare room, haven't used it for years and years- it has millions of layers of dust.

I know this is an old thread but I believe no-one has answered one of his questions.

Its callex scaleextric because they are scale models of cars that run on electric (There is a big book which tells the whole history of it.

To be politically correct they are slot cars, Scalextric is a brand but there are more than one brand which will run on the track.

I have got a lot of cars, just under 90 and my stepdad has about 200. But we count it all as one collection

Our son is now 3....the 'My first Scaelextric' is designed for 3 and over.....I am going to be in heaven tomorrow! :)

My only upset is that TCR never hit off like it should have. TCR stood for Total Control Racing, and didn't involve slots, so you could switch from track to track. As a kid I much preferred this racer as it enabled me to block others from overtaking. Also they were the first to have headlights on the cars...many days were wasted playing TCR Cops N Robbers (with broken bridge - no slots meant can jump empty tracks sections)

For a brief history of this great racer go to http://www.stuffwelove.co.uk/racingsets/tcr.htm

I bought a 4 lane version last xmas so all the kids and messen could join in together was a major let down as none were greatly impressed to be honest. They were more interested in the Ps2 but at least I had some fun with it.

It now sits under one of the kids beds boxed and gathering dust seems a shame really and a waste of £90, I could of bought 4 nice 5 gallon Teardrops instead.

Don't give me that rubbish D2J. I can hear the faint buzzing from your room every night! At least it sounds like a Scalextric....

Me too - got a set of mini's with lights - run it for hours in the dark - really relaxing despite the hassle of the bin lid :(

Its mine anyway....

I'm going to treat myself in the Sales for a Citroen and a Subaru also with lights...

TCR's were forever flying of the damn track due to the lack of a slot to guide them along.

I remember I always wanted one because the lad next door had one, so we got our son one (a long time ago). It was the Le Mans 24 hour thing with gold and silver porsches. I found it very disappointing as the cars kept flying off the track.

My grandson inherited my sons brio railway and got some new bits for Christmas. I love building the layouts for him. He has a little station with recorded announcements and all the Thomas the Tank engine Trains. Like this much better than Scalextric.

I've recently picked up a couple of boxes of scalextric from boot sales, I used to have the four lane track with as much track again, then sold the lot when I was 16.... :(

Bought one for the youngest son when he was about 4 months old - he watched it while propped up on cushions. He never took an interest in it at all, or the train set we got when he was about 2years old.

Right apologies for ressurrecting this thread. Having spent today searching through my loft at home I have found allmy scalextric track. However I cant find the hand controllers I was wondering if I went and bought a new start grid with hand controls will it work with my track which is about 10 years old.

I have been dropping hints now for weeks that santa will be here soon and I want a scalextric, all I'm getting is looks that say no chance they take too much room up and your mates will be round cluttering the place up playing with it.
I need a bargaining tool, something women can't live without :help:

Hair-straighteners are very popular I hear. Or you could offer her the shopping trip of a lifetime - say a weekend in New York and a promise not to whimper too much?

You can't skimp on these things and an afternoon at crystal peaks just isn't going to cut the mustard. I suppose it depends on how badly you want your toy cars.....

If you insist on being a cheapskate then go shopping in london for the day at least you'll save on flights. :hihi:

You asked what would lure the long suffering Mrs Woggle into buying you the scaley thing and I think a trip to New York might just do it. Failing that you should write to Santa, but remember you have to have been good all year ...... damn, that's not going to work is it?

The best set I saw when I was a lad was a coal merchant that made and built his own stuff Had an 8 lane track in the loft on a hardboard/plywood base with copper tape either side of the slot for the pick up. Took my own Scalextric cars up to his house and raced them on the track they were blown away. Knowhere neer the speed his got up too. you came up the stairs to the attic and closed a trap door. The track took up all the attic room.
Would love to know what happened to it ,it was in the early 60's.

Just read all the posts on this thread:D, you blokes are priceless, it seems the little boy in you all never quite goes away.
When my husband bought our son(who was 3 at the time) a Scalextric , they unwrapped it together on Xmas morning, with much excitement........
I left them too it and went to baste the bird, 2 mins later a little boy came into the kitchen, sobbing......
"Mummy, Daddy and uncle Tony won't let me play !"

I rest my case!
