View Full Version : Taxis in Sheffield during Ramadam
Bad_Hair_Day 11-10-2004, 14:46 I've just found out that Ramadam starts on Friday (well according to my diary it does anyway!) and a workmate mentioned that this means there will be a lot less taxis around for a few weeks as a lot of taxi drivers will be taking part in their festivities/worship. Is this right? Will it be difficult to get cabs in town after a night out or could we end up wandering the streets until the early hours?
I don't recall noticing the taxi situation being any worse than normal during this period in previous years.
Oh yeah. It's abit of a nightmare to be honest. I remember waiting ages at the train station either last year or the year before. My advice is to plan in advance, arrange a lift, or get some booze in, some mates around, a few choice records and have a cheap one ;)
J_Horizontal 11-10-2004, 14:50 More than likely. Considering it is nigh on impossible these days to find a caucasian taxi driver.
mr.blaze 11-10-2004, 14:50 99% of the black cabs most likely won't be on the street. However you can always use the private companies. Mercury are the best imo.
why would there be less taxis?? ramadam is fasting during the day. and eating when it gets dark. so by a 10 30 most cabbies will be on move again will they not?
Interesting.
Most Muslims I work with still work during teh daylight hours but do get back to their families for the breaking of the fast. The days around Eid are obviously taken as a holiday - like we take Christmas.
Some Taxi Drivers may feel that they're not up to driving at teh end of a day of fasting, but I've never noticed a real issue in teh daytime. Perhaps after dark it gets different.

A.B.Yaffle 11-10-2004, 18:39 Does this mean Ecclesall Road will be safe to walk or drive down at night?:D
Yeh ramadan will probably either be on thur/fri or sat
it'll be very hard to get hold of a cab bout 6 - 6:15 in the evening
quite a few will go to the mosque to pray and other will go back on the road so there will be a few cabs but not as much as usual
I remember for the last few years it's been a nightmare for getting taxis ......
i used to work in a pub and customers would ask us to call them a cab but youve got no chance when ramadan starts!!!
Agreed. Last year me and the housemates were going out that night and it was near impossible to get one. I think we ended up walking into town eventually. Luckily I only lived in Cemetary Rd at that time. :(

For this period the roads should be slightly safer as the number of black cabs are reduced.

Are you old and frail then ? - no wonder the modern generation is obese and not fit - they cannot walk half a mile without bussing or taxiing it - always amuses me to see people catch the 22 bus from washington road sharrow into town when you could walk it in 10-15 minutes !!
Big deal if all the taxis are off the road - most of Sheffield (like me) live within 30-50 mins walking distance of town !

Is there any need to SHOUT!
Well i would just be aware that , especially on friday midday to 2pm, you would have more difficulty getting one coz ppl go to the prayer , especially during ramadhan.
I know i nearly missed my train and plane last year although i did book the taxi the nite before. I had to call my friend in an emergency to take me!!!!

Here we go again, slagging the buses off :loopy:
Get a life mate.
lalaland 15-10-2004, 10:07 He has a point though, I saw a bus driver cut up a car a few months back while leaving a bus lane.
He nearly wiped out the car so the driver beeped at the bus and continued. The bus driver then leaned out of the window and started swearing at him.
I was quite shocked as there were loads of people on the bus including kids, but this didn't seem to stop the driver.
It was one of those green buses that we see in Sheffield.
Not sure what happened then as I carried on down the road, but I don't think it was very professional of the bus driver, especially when the bus driver was at fault.

And all car drivers are polite and courtious towards each other at all times.

I was backing up kirky's point based on my own experiences.
What makes this particular event worse is that fact that there were many people on the bus, customers of that bus company, that witnessed the driver using foul language and vicious gestures. I am sure that his employers wouldn't have been impressed, especially in front of young children like that.
It's also a concern that this bus was between two lanes on a busy part of Ecclesall Road while the driver was actually leaning half way out of the window. I would consider this to be a hazard to other motorists and his passengers as he wasn't in control of the bus while leaning out of the window.
I don't have anything against bus drivers, I know there are some that aren't as good as others, but the majority seem ok to me.
It's only a handful that seem to be on a mission against other road users, swear openly and smoke. These may seem like minor things and in all truth they are, but the drivers are in a position of responsibiltiy to their passengers and also the image of the company they work for. If they all behaved as most of them do, ie correctly, then this wouldn't be an issue.

Nah then tetchy! No need to jump down my throat is there really? :P
For your information walking doesn't bother me in the slightest but when you've planned to go out somewhere and be there by taxi at a certain time but then you find it impossible to get a taxi cos of some ethnic holiday then it's a little annoying. Just one of those things though isn't it. :P

Pot.. Kettle.. Black.. :P
u aint gonna get any taxis (well the odd few) during the times of Pray as most will be at the mosque
its gonna be murder in the evenings tho
best of luck in getting one
Phoned up my local taxi office to book one 90mins in advance last night and he said 'sorry mate, you've got no chance'. I said 'what do you suggest?' and he gave me another number. I called it and got one booked straight away no problems. :o
Luck of the draw I guess. :D

If only the buses ran at night... I have no option other than get a taxi at midnight, since those backwards people at First bus axed all night buses a few years back.
During the daytime I do get buses, as why would I pay £10 for a taxi when the bus is £1.50 tops? Only problem is buses go nowhere near the train station, which is a bugger when you get off a train with luggage.

In Sheffield it is a nightmare getting a taxi period - Ramadan or not!

During the daytime maybe - when I can get a bus anyway!

During the daytime maybe I don't use them during the day, only on Friday and Saturday nights normally and don't have any problems.
