View Full Version : Visiting York...
*Twinkle* 15-02-2007, 12:10 I'm considering spending a year in York (Sept 2008-July 2009) to study my Legal Practice Course at The College of Law, York.
I'm road tripping on the 7th of March to see what the College is like and to get a feel for what its like there. (I heard its got 365 pubs... woop!)
Does anyone have any tips for me regarding how to spend the morning there? Chances are we'll be finding our bearings/shopping etc...
I understand parking is a problem, so I intend to park at the College and then either walk (should it be close) or use the bus to find the main shopping areas.
Any tips/Advice etc? I've only ever been to the University of York on a day visit and never got to see what its like to live there.
baileys_mum 15-02-2007, 12:11 Don't bother with Yorvik, its pants
Ginger_Kitty 15-02-2007, 12:13 To be honest there's LOADS to do in York; museums, Clifford Tower, the walls, the Railway Museum, the Minster.... and the town centre itself is also nice just to spend a day wandering!!!
*Twinkle* 15-02-2007, 12:15 Doubt we'd have time to be honest (for Yorvik)
I'm hoping we'll arrive about 9.30am at the College, have a bit of time in York to explore, then get back to the College for the Workshop 13.30-16.00.
I also need to look for accommodation too while I'm there... See if I can see some areas that would be close/suitable.
One of my best friends did her undergrad degree in york but to afford housing she had to live quite a way out of the city, about a 45 minute walk to town centre or so.
The other thing i noticed was that you cannot get a taxi at night. York just does not believe in black cabs, it was always either walk or book one hours in advance.
However, i've only been a couple of times, so this may be completely rare!

_Kirsty_ 15-02-2007, 18:07 I went to York for a day with my ex. It was great, even though we were both hungover.
We went to the Viking Centre, OMG, i loved it! I got picked out of the audience and sent into the 'dock' where i got questioned for 'prancing around naked dancing round a fire'. Needless to say I pleaded guilty :hihi:

Did you offer to demonstrate, in order to explain the mitigating circumstances? :P

There are any number of touristy things to do in York, but those won't really help you decide if you want to live there. Wander around the town centre a bit from a shoppers' point of view, and think about things you want to do on a regular basis; do they have good cinemas/parks/bowling alleys etc., depending of course on your own preferences. Drive round some of the outlying areas to get a feel for the city as a city, rather than as a tourist attraction.
I've always fancied living in York, as long as I wasn't in the floodline :hihi: but it's an expensive place.

Ofcourse. Not. Well, i did later back at the hotel for my ex, but thats a different story haha
_Kirsty_ 15-02-2007, 18:31 Just realised... it was the dungeons where i got picked, not the viking centre. we couldnt get in the viking centre!

When I went there it did not half stink from the loos. Good beer though
*Twinkle* 21-02-2007, 12:57 Okay guys, its 2 weeks until the visit... I'm currently researching where to live, should I choose to study there.
I've been advised to live either in the city centre (No go for me as I'm taking the car) or at South Bank...
Does anyone know what South Bank is like? Or can you give a Sheffield equivalent... IE South Bank = Arbourthorne/Ecclesall?
*Twinkle* 25-02-2007, 13:12 Still wondering on South Bank guys... can anyone help? Don't want to end up in a warzone or anything lol

I think it's quite a nice area
close to town

*Twinkle* 25-02-2007, 19:07 Thanks blackspot...
I guess I'll just have to get a feel for the place when I go... So long as its mostly studenty I'm sure it'll be the right place for me! :D
EdnaKrabappe 25-02-2007, 19:22 When i was at uni we'd have regular trips up to York to do the Micklegate run. It truly is brilliant for a pub crawl
I had a lovely meal in this place one time that i went and all the restaurants around this area seemed the nicest.

York is easy to walk around but I remember that I did struggle to get taxis the times i stayed there and needed to book them - made me book hotels nearer the city centre.
*Twinkle* 28-02-2007, 20:24 I dont mean to sound stupid, but York does have nightclubs, doesnt it? I just need to get my groove on now and again and would have to come home every weekend if they didnt have any lol

cos it's got nightclubs it's got students hasn't it think about it lol
*Twinkle* 28-02-2007, 20:31 Lol knew I was being stupid! I dont want to go to somewhere small and boring lol :P I need clubs, clubs and more clubs lol
*Twinkle* 06-03-2007, 14:55 Well the trip is tomorrow... Hopefully it'll be a nice day and we can stroll around at leisure and get a feel for the centre and the campus...
I'm hoping South Bank is similar to Ecclesall Rd, but we'll see.... I should arrive about 10am and will have 3 hours to explore before the talk at the college...
Ousetunes 07-03-2007, 08:39 I'm hoping South Bank is similar to Ecclesall Rd, but we'll see.......
You'll have seen and discovered that no, it isn't like Ecclesall Road.
But I say this as a positive thing. York is fantastic (despite the recent ruination from the Lib Dems [but they'll be gone soon]).
I hope the daffodils were out when you went. That's a lasting impression of mine, banks of yellow daffies on the ramparts, the best being at Fishergate, along Nunnery Lane, opposite the station (Queen Street/Station Road) and along Lord Mayor's Walk.
A walk through Museum Gardens to see the crocuses and snowdrops; a walk along the River Ouse with the early spring sunshine on the water. Aaah, life's beginning to feel better!!!
York is probably the only place where I don't actually mind 'going shopping'. I'm not a shopper (well, I am a male after all) but shopping along Coney Street and High Petergate is great.
A meal in La Vecchia Scoula followed by a pint of Theakston Old Peculiar in Ye Old Star Inne and then a night on the ale (Lendals, Bar 38, Oscar's Wine Bar, Kennedy's, Blue Bell, Spread Eagle) - what a place.
*Twinkle* 07-03-2007, 17:56 I guess its what I was expected... But not what I wanted, to be honest. York is lovely... For a weekend... But spending a year, or even starting a new life there - no way.
Its very small, quaint... and all I've ever known is bright lights of the City... So I think the transition would be a bit shocking for me.
The college itself was very nice, a bit out in the sticks but I drive so its no problem...
But no, York won't be the place for me... The search goes on!
Corr_Blimey 07-03-2007, 18:39 Watch out for self raising traffic bollards.
*Twinkle* 07-03-2007, 19:46 Watch out for self raising traffic bollards.
