My 89y.o. friend has just had to have is dog PTS - but grieving/sympathys aside, he needs another. It needs to be placid, possibly a bit older (but not ill), have a good deep bark and not likely to run off. It will get walked every day and will have a very good home with him. Jack Russell sized at least, but preferably not too big - although anything considered. Nice temperment and house-trained is necessity (assuming it barks!). Please get in touch asap. I check my email each evening. xxx
check out some of the rescue places,or pm rainrescue, who is a member on here-she may be able to help
maybe the mods could move this to the pets section
Have a look at the www.rainrescue.co.uk website :)
it changes frequently, so check every couple of days if you don't see a dog suitable for you on your first visit ;)

There is the oldies club just made for such circumstances http://www.oldies.org.uk/
I am sorry to be a kill joy though but just one thought, if your friend becomes ill or worse  who would take care of the dog?

I have to second moonbird on that score - its something that needs thinking about. Often older people expect the dog to be able to just 'jump' into the space left by the previous dog.
However, if the person is really serious about wanting a dog - another group along with the oldies - is the Cinamon Trust. This is a fantastic trust that not many people ever hear about. They help older people keep their dogs in their own homes - and support them. If (when) the person dies - or can really no longer look after the dog, the dog is then continually cared for by the Trust, but will be 'loaned' out to someone who could continue to look after it.
Your gentleman sounds like he could be ideal to be one of their 'carer's and then be supported by them. Like i said - a really good charity - have a lot of supporters around the country, but not well known around our parts.
Also, the oldies group is highly recommended - but they would be adopting the dog out to the person and I don't know how much support they could give. (sorry for long post again)
