Breif synopsis wud be much appreciated tattoo 11-10-2004, 16:40 bout us loosing our country A.B.Yaffle 11-10-2004, 17:00 Originally posted by tattoo bout us loosing our country To be more accurate, its about the reasons why people came over to the UK from former British colonies. And about why Enoch Powell wanted people from India to come over to save the NHS from collapsing. It was an interesting program. timo 11-10-2004, 18:08 The thing is, the NHS was in a precarious state not because [as is so often implied on programmes like this, or in Sociology textbooks] native British people were "lazy" or didn't want to do the jobs, but because of the relatively low wages. The programme stressed the positive side to mass immigration. On the negative side, if I may put forward an argument without being labelled a "racist", nobody gave a social mandate for the huge changes, cultural dislocation and chaos that followed the ill-thought out process. It was all well and good for people like Roy Jenkins to talk about people "living together in an atmosphere of mutual tolerance" at the time. That is unrealistic and ahistorical. What we have been subject to is over fifty years of systematic evasion and pretence from politicians regarding the effects of this huge migration. We have a situation now, where there is widespread racial unrest and irremediable grudges between different ethnic groups. We have the term "Multicultural Society" foisted upon us. What does this really mean? It refers to trivial surface-changes in popular culture, for example, the popularity of Chicken Tikka Masala over dishes like Fish and Chips[ and yes, Iknow the latter was a Jewish invention...]. Census returns tell us that Britain is around 94% "White". Most ethnic minorities are concentrated in the inner city areas of large English cities; only there can the discourse be truly called "multicultural". Someone said on this thread that the programme showed how we "lost" our country. I tend to disagree. I think it shows how misguided policies have put our identity under threat. In the English hinterland of market towns, where millions still live, a variety of Englishness still continues quite apart from anything "multicultural". Cultures do change and can absorb "outsiders", but maybe there are some groups who cannot be easily assimilated. Maybe our old friend Enoch was right about it being a question of numbers. How many of us, whether we be sceptical conservatives or enthusiastic multiculturalists, truly do not feel foreboding when contemplating the future of race relations in this country? |
