I assume he's not cage trained?

who is his breeder? have you contacted them? any responsible breeder will happily have their own dogs back (often with a part refund) and will have a waiting list of people looking for dogs

He used to go in a cage but hated it. The breeder wont take him back as hes now older than 4 months. I really dont want to get rid of him but cant affor to take chances with the kids as hes a bit snappy. He loves his walks and will happily run round in the woods without his lead.

have you had him to any training classes?

This kind of behaviour is usually a result of people not understanding the world from a dog perspective

He's already succeded in deciding that you won't be caging him, so you've given him the idea he's in charge - no wonder he's nipping the kids, as that's how they communicate with their own pups ;)

It sounds like it is only nipping as I've described, or has he caused hospital sized injuries?

PM in reply if you'd rather ;)

I had a cocker and I understand where you are coming from, please remember he's probably teething and going through his adolescence at the same time

Hi thanks for asking.
I decided to keep him and persevere with him and am glad to say he's ok now must have just been a phase. He now gets on great with the kids and is bessy mates with my 4 year old Akita bitch although I have to watch him as he keeps trying to hump her - funny to see but the results would be disastrous :hihi:

I really would recommend taking him to a training class if you don't already

Trying to hump another dog or people is a sign of dominance, so if he's trying it on with your akita if the akita isn't in season is grounds for making sure your spaniel knows absolutely which is his place in the pack. Taking him to training classes will give you some great contact with people who know dog behaviour very well, and may be able to help you steer him in the right direction before he gets out of hand

If you really can't manage to take him to classes, stick around here and chat to us - there are plenty of people who are able to offer you ongoing advice here :)
