View Full Version : Who Remembers The Wapentake?
WallBuilder 11-10-2004, 00:03 http://www.borracho.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/rock/index7.shtml
Here is the link to the latest collection of people who could be found in the Wap in the early to mid 80's, one or two should look familiar if it's only the DJ
Before you ask I didn't include one of myself , don't want to scare you all awaay.
i remember the wap they should never have shut it when they reopened it as the casbah it was nothinglike the wap for a start you could see where you were going and there were to many suits in there  :gag:
What a fantastic nostalgic trip :D
I looked through your photos praying that there wouldn't be any of me lurking there and was then disappointed that there wasn't.
I would be interested to see what these people looked like now.....all staid and respectable with the semi, the 2.5 kids, the dog etc etc.
Have added this to my favourites so that I can keep looking in. Superb.
Yes they dont do pubs and clubs like it any more. I loved the wap its just not the same now.... casbah sucks does anyone remember ben, he looked a bit like derreck griffiths, he was a sound lad used to bump into him everywhere. but havent seen him for a good few years now remember having a good old headbang to napalm death in the leadmill where we just happend to bump into him again. yes a lot of the old faces have drifted away to pastures new
WallBuilder 11-10-2004, 11:40 A few of the old faces can still be seen in the Corporation but most of them I suspect are looking for their zimmer frames as I type.
Ben was still to be seen about three years ago he was in the Boarddwalk and I had to wonder whether he was still trying to sell insurance policies.
Just a shame I haven't got any good pics of Olga and Madge who ran the place but I've got my spies out looking.
So enjoy your meander down memory lane and if there are any pics in your collections with a Sheffield rock theme I'm sure the site designer would be delighted to hear from you, also tell all your friends, aquaintances and anybody else who may be interested.
How many snakebites on the ceiling?....
There will never be another.
Good God!!!
I feel ancient after seeing those photos. Anyone remember the Saturday afternoons in the peace gardens following a session at the wap- black pudding and cider fuelled!!

Ahhh yes, it was the real deal that Wapentake. Great collection of photos!
They are all take long before my time at the "Wop" but looking at the mad combinations of hair and clothing makes me feel misty eyed with relief.
Bloomdido 12-10-2004, 19:29 I was on the door for a while. Used to get paid four quid a night! I remember the 'Bucket of water song' being banned for obvoius reasons, Ken the DJ, the football tables and loads of mates down there. They used to have bands on wednesday nights for a while, Berlin, Heritage, Geddes Axe and Renegade. It was just about the most uncool time to be into rock music. Used to go to the Nelson as well and then onto Rebels.

zimmer frame???? It was not THAT many decades ago you know, only one!!!
But what a classic venue the Wapentake was......Friday and Saturday nights, superb, best times of my life. Nothing has come close (in Sheffield anyway) since.....its the atmosphere that made the place......just totally TOGETHER as one.....sounding like an old hippie there....which I am....so there!!

Saturday afternoons sat in the Peace Gardens waiting for the Yorkshireman's Arms to open for the evening session. Groups of us sat around enjoying the sunshine and on occasion throwing someone in the fountain pool just by the eggbox. I know we used to look slightly threatening to some of the little old dears who would sit on the benches eyeing uss up nervously, however if the police came through we weren't misbehaving so all they could do is remind us to make sure we behaved ourselves. One guy used to bring his pet rat and another had one of his indian pythons with him, five foot of snake moving at speed as it tried to escape. I just wish I had my camera with me on more occasions.

Hi,
Just curious to know when you were on the door? I can remember two guys both called Mick, lovely chaps and very even tempered, little Mick wore glasses and had a thumb missing. A few years after we had Chris with his dog Taz and Russel who are both featured in the pics. With them was Robin who the girls all said had 'come to bed eyes' [girls will know what I mean]
A smoothie drunk and thrown out of Henry's came across one evening and managed to put his fist through the wire mesh glass door panel, the police merely had to follow the trail of blood, one other guy on the door at the time of Chris was a character called Wolf who went on to guard door at the Hornblower.
feederfil 12-10-2004, 22:33 just to be really boring I remember when the wapentake opened, when it was part of the grosvenor hotel. It was one of the first places in the town centre to sell keg tetleys and also double diamond! We used to drink a pint of mixed which was the above two together, still don't know why!It was also waiter service in there if you wanted it,but of course you had to tip the waiter!
Bloomdido 12-10-2004, 22:43 Must have been early 80's. I moved to London in 82. I wasn't a Mick, I was a Phil. Never had any trouble, that was the beauty of the place - all these heavy lookin' geezers and less trouble than the Blue Bell!
WallBuilder 12-10-2004, 22:55 Hi Phil,
Okay it's bugging me, I must know you at least by sight, could you give a bit more of a physical description, better still send the Rock Reunited site designer a pic of yourself if you've got one from that time so you can be added to the Wap page.
Phil? Phil? Phil? Nope nothing registers.
goldenfleece 13-10-2004, 08:22 another had one of his indian pythons with him, five foot of snake moving at speed as it tried to escape. I just wish I had my camera with me on more occasions. [/B]
That used to be guy called Brian who had the pythons I think....biker chap who used to drink in the Wapentake all the time, a South Yorkshire chapter Hells Angel (The Druids) member, am I right?
WallBuilder 13-10-2004, 12:14 You're nearly right Goldenfleece, certainly his name was Brian or as he later became known Snake and he was a member of the Druids. However the Druids although styling themselves on Hells Angels were never a true Hells Angel chapter, this wasn't a problem as the Yorkshire Blues had gone, however if any of the All England chapter ever came to Sheffield the Druids were noticeable by their absense. Apparently wearing colours or patches and pretending to be Angels would of annoyed true Hells Angels somewhat.
Just one other minor point if the Druids were a motorcycle gang then how come some of them didn't own a motorbike and relied on the buses to get around?
goldenfleece 13-10-2004, 15:26 I never knew they were not a real Chapter of HellsAngels......no one told me that at the the time anyway. They looked genuine enough. Generally a fairly Ok set of lads, unless you got on the wrong side of them. I saw a few do just that and they certainly lived to regret it!! They did all get banned from the Wapentake at one point in the mid 80's for jumping up and down on the table football machine, and bending all the rods, and also for smashing one of the pinball machines with a brown ale bottle. Must have just missed getting the high score or something.....
you dont see any of them around any more....I wonder if they still exist in any form..
WallBuilder 13-10-2004, 16:14 The Druids certainly styled themselves as Hells Angels but weren't true Angels as apparently you have to apply to become a chapter. Sounds bizarre but it seems as though true Angels have a very strict code of practise when it comes to membership. I knew a few of them by sight and one or two by name but noticed for the most part if you left them alone they left you alone. Did have a couple of 'prospects' ttrainee Druids try it on with me once in the Wap, insisting that i buy them a drink. Not a chance, I'm fussy as to who I spend my money on. Luckily a lass named Sparrow who was married to the Druids second in command I think saw what was going on and warned the prospects off. My mate Fred was very unhappy with me and I suppose I was lucky to have been a face that Sparrow liked. Latrer on one of the prospects did become a full fledged Druid and he was a nasty little man name of Deano if anyone remembers him.
They hung out in the pub down by the markets, the Alexandria I think it was called and were barred from the Wap [by Olga] the Yorkshiremans Arms, the Sportsman , the Foresters and the Hornblowwer unless they either took off their colours or hid them under another jacket. No Hells Angel would of ever done this but I noticed some of the Druids did in order to come into the Wap. Unpleasant louts throwing their wweight around when in a group as I remember from a certain party at Heeley that got a write up in the Star courtesy of the Druids.
Bloomdido 13-10-2004, 17:04 Wallbuilder
I was about 6 foot 7 tall (still am in fact), blondish hair. Used to wear a black leather jacket with an afghan waistcoat over the top. Had a beard for a while - that was nearly ginger! Oh the embarrasment. Used to hang around with Andy C, he of the red and blue leather jackets, who was nearly as tall as me.
WallBuilder 13-10-2004, 17:34 Tall with an afghan waistcoat?
Got you, aging memories have resurfaced, you were on the tall side weren't you, did you associate with the two female bar staff who seemed to be on the tall side, my memory of them, there were two of them is tall, blonde hair and furry knee length boots.
Bloomdido 13-10-2004, 17:41 Don't think so. Didn't associate with too many females at the time - Not through choice I hasten to add. Used to drink in the same local as Madge when not in the Wap but she never wore furry boots to the best of my knowledge.

No I'msorry that picture is just too scary, Madge in furry boots, I remember Olga used to treat us like little children sometimes and I never knew of anyone who got the better of her, I've been trying to remember the name of a tall lanky, dark haired guy with glasses who worked behind the bar and I use 'work' in a very loose sense as he was very adept at not working and has this ability to look straight through you even when you waved the money wildly in front of him desperate for a drink.

Being asked to be a prospect was something that actually happened to three of my colleagues. But then as a prospect you had to do anything that a druid told you to do however ridiculous or ill mannered, for example, break a raw egg on the pavement and then slurp it up, allow any druid to sleep with your girl friend. I saw and know these things happened and wasn't in the least impressed.

Remember him well, always wore a long sleeved shirt, had floppy greasy hair, and was usually sat behind the bar reading a book. Very reluctant to stop reading to serve anyone....I think he had 2 operational modes: not working and not working.
Trying to remember some of the other bar staff......a lot came and went....cant seem to recall any others specifically.......oh, there was a long haired guy with waist length black hair and combats, think he was called Dave (circa 81/82/3), plus a short, portly chap with curly black hair hair who was there from 1981 right up to the early 90's behind the bar...never smiled, usually wore a leather waistcoat, remember him? Saw him recently in the Nelson actually but have no idea who he is.....
and Gloria, barmaid from 93/4, saw her the other week in the Nelson as well.
Oh the happiest days of my life were spent in that bar. I still remember what has been to date the happiest moment of my life when I was in there in December 1982 on A saturday night with the best girl in the whole known Universe and a table full of friends which was piled high with bottles of Newcastle brown ale and great loud early 80's rock.....HEAVEN
WallBuilder 13-10-2004, 20:20 The small guy who worked behind the bar is called Tony, if you take another lok at the pics on Rock Reunited he is on page seven, although you may not recognise him as he doesn't look as miserable as he usually did probably because there's a girl holding him.
Sorry Goldenfleece but you might of been sat with an acceptable girl in 82 but the nicest, best and most attractive one was with me, just a shame she isn't still with me.
Newcastle Brown is oveer rated and although very popular in most of the rock veenues I've been in from London to Oxford to Leeds when you get to Newcastle and Durham it's not any where near as popular. A rocker in a pub called the Angel in Durham challanged my friend to a drinking competition and just couldn't handle it when Nigel [my mate] suggested Newky Brown and then drank the northerner under the table.
goldenfleece 13-10-2004, 20:42 Sorry Goldenfleece but you might of been sat with an acceptable girl in 82 but the nicest, best and most attractive one was with me,
oooohh.....dont now about that. Mine was Goddess of the nile, Queen of the Empire, Princess of the Peace Gardens, a veritable babe amongst babes, the absolute perfect example of true perfection........God, what was her name agin???

So let me get this straight,
1. She's a crocodile.....they live in the Nile
2. She's an ant.....a book title Empire of the ants
3. She's an old car..... with a very hard ride
4. She's defeinitly under age.....A few of them were
5. She looks like a kebab to a drunk.....perfection indeed
Nope sorry she doesn't rock my boat
goldenfleece 13-10-2004, 21:49 Crocodile? Ant?.........
She was an afghan coat clad goddess........bounteous creature of hidden delights who liked Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne.... and Duran Duran (!!!!)
Also enjoyed newcastle brown ale...oops there I go promoting that product again.......FREE CRATE PLEASE SCOTTISH AND NEWCASTLE BREWERY.....

Hey Vidster, and here was me thinking you'd be the short haired type!
I have some very fond memories of the Wap, but the orange spotty floor swamped from the blocked toilets certainly wasn't one of them! If we were meeting in the Wap, I was very choosy about my footwear! And the height of that bar - I'm 5ft tall. One night I was standing on the brass rail to be served, and when I collected my Newky Brown and stepped backwards (and down) the barmaid nearly followed me over the bar! Obviously thought I'd had too many!
WallBuilder 13-10-2004, 22:23 That was one of the nice things about the Wap, although it catered to the long haired hairies which included some of the girls it also had an open door policy if a smoothie felt like slumming it.
One of the few times we had trouble in the Wap well apart from the odd disagreement between guys over a girl wass when a bunch of Mods came in in small groups then congregated near the pool table and then kicked off. They obviously thought that they'd hit a few bikers around the head. Unfortunately for them they'd met at the pool table that was at the far end of the place and soon found themselves trapped and unable to get back to the main staircase and facing a lot of very upset rockers. They headed for the emergency fire escape and headed up into the Grovenor House Hotel, probably just as well as we'd locked the doors at the main entrance as other lowlifes were trying to force entry to help their parker clad colleagues. I was lucky I got hit by glass shards as one of them attempted to ghain entry some of his pals on the fire escape suffered slightly more, I remember the prize, a parker literally ripped off the back of one of them being waved around. I was going in the Wap for over ten years and that is the only bad trouble I saw in all that time.

Don't exagerate they didn't flood or get blocked, no it was far more likely that the queues to use the urinals were simply too long and if all the sinks were being used that left the corner of the room, you couldn't use the toilets they'd usually got people in them throwing up. Well that was the guys, the girls had lights, toilet paper and must of been a Tardis as thousands of girls seemed to be in there at the same time [internal description by word of mouth only]

She was called JO-ANNE.....dark hair, CLeopatra like. She is very slightly larger these days and has at least 2 kids AFAIK. SHe had a lovely afghan coat and Lez Zepp T shirt, and also was a Barclay James Harvest Fan. CLass!! We went to Rebels a lot on Saturdays in 82/3, but not every week. Also haunted the Yorkshireman Arms and the Underground.
Lived in Ecclesall. I met her in February 1982 and we dated until Summer 84....amazing time was had by all. SHe hung around with friends, girls called HELEN and KATHY, both of whom had very memorable long blond hair and also had afghans coats. They went thro a leather jacket phase in 1985 and left the rock scene to have babies and mortgages around 1988/9.
Sometimes I wish I had been a bit more serious back in the 80's and we MIGHT even have been together today, but thats just wishful thinking and the grass is always so much greener than it ever is, or could ever have been.
OK... time to own up
Many many years ago, following the demise of the Buccaneer, a load of us shifted alegiance to the Wapantake, which was nicknamed "The Wap".
One of our gang was nicknamed The Wap (forgot why) as well, so... late one night staggering home at the early hours we saw the sign over the Wapentake door and thought (as drunks do) 'Now there's an ideal birthday present for our best mate', so after climbing on peoples shoulders etc. we removed the bloody thing and legged it (don't know why cus' there was no one around ) down Wellington Street to the relative safety of the Broomhall Flats (what am I saying?) from there we split up and made our ways home to the leafy suburbs...I forgot who had the responsibilty of lugging a bloody great pub sign home but a few days later we presented the sign to our mate (he was not there when the incident took place) who received it with tears in his eyes...for many years it graced his bedroom wall until he grew up,and, like the rest of us, got married etc. those single guys remaining in the gang could not understand why his new lady was not keen displaying this piece of heritage on her lounge wall!!
To the lady who ran the Wap at that time (forgot her name, but she was a tough cookie if I remember) I apologise.. to the brewery...IOU one pub sign
just rememvered her name...Olga (the manager/owner lady)
WallBuilder 14-10-2004, 16:58 If that sign still exists in some dusty attic or cellar there are probably some people out and about maybe even on this forum who would be prepared to pay money for it.
Olga Marshall was the manager of the Wap the place actually belonged to the Grovenor House hotel though I do seem to remember the ownership going to one of the band members of Def Leopard or maybe it was Saxon.
Goldenfleece the description you offered hasn't made me suddenly remember her, I knew two Joannes but neither fit your description, never mind it just goes to show how busy the place was.

It was a Def Leppard person, dont know which one. They did not have it long though before the Casbah came about.....no money in it in its last days as the Wapentake I guess, as few customers.
Yes the Wap was PACKED in the old days, it used to take half an hour of wading thro bodies to find anyone unless u knew exactly where they were standing.
Time for a salutation to the greatest SHeffield Bar in history (1980 onwards)...viva la Wapentake.....
WallBuilder 14-10-2004, 17:47 The place was certainly very popular in the late seventies early eighties, on Friday and Saturday nights the place would be filled to capacity and then it was a case of queueing outside and as someone left someone else was allowed in. I could queue jump one advantage of working behind the bar in the Kay Gee Bee,the Wap bouncers knew I'd give them a couple of free drinks as way of thanks. It also helped if you were an attractive female as they seemed to either be allowed to queue jump or were simply invited in as 'friends of the bouncers' there were times when there'd be forty or more outside waiting to get in often blocking the car park entrance to the hotel.
Can't think of a single smoothie pub that had queues
goldenfleece 14-10-2004, 17:53 Can't think of a single smoothie pub that had queues [/B]
I have known the STONEHOUSE when it was the old courtyard bar to have queues outside on Saturday nights......not very often but it did happen.
For those who dont know what I mean by Courtyard Bar, its a bit difficult to explain as Orchard Square is sort of in the way a bit, but in the back it was a covered courtyard effect huge room with stone slabbed floor and beer garden tables and seats, fake shop windows and stuff and a clock tower.Loved it......it would probably be where the front of Waterstones book shop is now and all around the area there...
i got chucked out of the wap one saturday night for being "underage". Elgar was shoutin.."im having no 16 year olds in my pub" lol i was only 15 awwww them were the days...flooded ladies loos with no bog roll...i managed to keep sneakin in though when it got bizzy, and just kept a low profile.
they should never have changed it.Me and my mate would start off in the hallamshire, then go to the yorkshiremans, then end up in the wap. oh happy dayzzzz

Read your account of the mods/rockers thing, so I think I'm recounting a tale from a different era! And it was the ladies that flooded, every weekend night, half nine onwards, and I've witnessed the source of the problem. The reason we girls took so bloody long in there was how long it took us to swim upstream! And as for bogroll... I think Twist may have frequented the place at the same time as me.
WallBuilder 14-10-2004, 22:51 The disagreement between the mods and the Wap customers wasn't a fight as such, a fight is when someone is fighting, the mods did try to lash out but within seconds found themselves trapped with no back up. They ran away, that's not a fight, I'm sure any mod of the early 60's would of been turning in their grave [so to speak] to see the speed at which the fire escape stairs were mounted.
Sure the girls toilets flooded sometimes but so what, you all had heels on, well the girls I noticed anyway after the long hair.
Sorry, I've edited that, Wallbuilder. I think I mentioned the boots somewhere else. Suede was a definite no-no in the Wap, unless you drank shorts and left for somewhere else before the night was out. (And I do miss the place, and all those familiar faces, even the ones I never knew the names of)
WallBuilder 14-10-2004, 23:10 One of my delightful female companions wore the most gorgeous suede cavalier boots with a heel, I do seem to remember her getting rather techy when she came into the Wap after 9.30 pm. However there was a simple answer namely thigh length boots with a heel but in black leather, I could never decide which she looked better in.
You should of heard the bar staff not volunteering to mop the toilets out at about 11.30 pm, someone had to do it Olga said 'as otherwise the place would smell,' the place always smelled of something.

Gosh, I never saw the flooding that deep! :wow: :hihi:
WallBuilder 14-10-2004, 23:33 Being leather they were so much easier for me to clean, it was one way to make sure she'd wear them again.one of the things that used to make me feel slightly sick was watching all the plastic pint and half pint glasses sloshing around in the puddle, Just think the following night they'd be behind the bar again though it does explain why I prefer drinking out of a bottle.
Did you ever figure out a way to remove Rebels' dancefloor gunge from the soles without soaking for an hour? As for the glasses, 'two bottles of dog, please'
WallBuilder 14-10-2004, 23:47 Sticky feet, you used to break out in a sweat trying to tap your foot to a tune at times, in answer to your question, leave it to build up for a few weeks and then peel it off like a layer of sunburnt skin. Rebels for a time had carpeting round the edge and that was very nasty as you either stuck to it or it squished, I could never decide which was worse.

Ah, I recently wondered why I have a habit of tapping my heel. Steel tips don't stick! They're too small!
WallBuilder 14-10-2004, 23:54 Steel heel tips should be banned, their downright lethal as I'm sure you're aware. A girl wearing such things stamps back onto a guys foot, I'm not bothered how big and tough you are, that hurts, I bet you sound great though walking down the street!
Bloomdido 14-10-2004, 23:58 There's a picture of me at remediuk.org
Hover over the blue boxes and you will get a thumbnail. Andy is the top one, me the bottom one but it's not very clear. I will try and dig out some pictures from then. When were you in there Wallbuilder?
I wasn't big, but I was tough . I only weighed 7 stone. And it's the toes that are most lethal, if you practiced a martial art, which I did :heyhey:. Sounded brill when we were mob-handed! The lads all wore cowboy boots, and the trendies deemed it sensible to cross the street. Can't understand why, they were rather cute and cuddly really. Anybody out there remember Sheff Poly Rock Soc circa '89, '90ish?
And have you seen those things that are fashionable at the moment??
Waste of good suede. Wellies never flattered anybody's legs.
No offence taken.
WallBuilder 15-10-2004, 00:17 It is the big tough guy who ends up with tears in his eyes and a strong desire to sit down, cradle their foot and sob for their mummy.
Cowboy boots if you wore the sort with the pointed toes could be remarkably painful if you kicked someone in the shin, I actually went through a phase of wearing steel toe capped army boots in the Wap because they at least would give me some protection when wading through the crowd.
Motor cycle boots essential when trying to kick start a Norton Commando because if that machine kicked back it hurt a lot.

First walked through the door in 1977, I think I was slightly but only slightly underage.
Stopped going in around 1990 as I worked and lived near Derby for a time.
Really sad when I came back a lot of the old faces seemed to have disappeared and unfortunately there was one still in residence who didn't like me, some foolish notion that I'd had something to do with his marriage breaking up, [hand on heart nothing to do with me] Anyway he'd give me the dead look and so I started to spend more time in the White Lion or the Grapes if I was in town.
Does anyone remembeer the Museum pub that was another haunt for bikers and was comfortably grotty.

No, but I have very fond memories of the chip butties in the Yorkshiremans on Saturday lunchtimes!
goldenfleece 15-10-2004, 18:23 Does anyone remembeer the Museum pub that was another haunt for bikers and was comfortably grotty. [/B]
Yes for sure. Great place......sadly missed and was one of my fave bars right up until The end in 1987 when orchard Square arrived.
Although it may have closed in 1986....not sure now.
WallBuilder 16-10-2004, 16:25 The Museum was an interesting old place, the guys toilets were outside in the back yard so if it was raining you'd get wet on your trips to the loo. Also the place was always dead on a sunday, however on one occasion when the police raided it on a sunday they managed to arrest about twenty people for possession, why do I suspect that something was going on that day? The gas fire in the long back room always hung at an angle which didn't look very safe but it was still in use.
Another haunt of my youth was the Cambridge on Cambridge street, we used to go there to play pool and it's were I saw a very attractive girl in a pair of fawn cavalier boots who I liked from the onset, anyone from the Cambridge should remember her.

Is there a theme developing here, Wallbuilder? Should that be the start of a new thread? Or perhaps not, I may have too much to say!
WallBuilder 16-10-2004, 16:44 People who went in the Wap did frequent other places as well, but at least all of the pubs I've mentioned were pubs in which bikers\ rockers felt comfortable, unlike an earlier post in this thread. If you like I could develop things further with the White Lion at Heeley, The penguin at Shiregreen, THe Wordsworth Taveern at Parsons Cross, The cross Sythes at Totley, The Pomona at Ecclesall, The John o gaunt on Blackstock road, the Hornblower in town, I could be found in most of these pubs at various times sometimes with a booted female to boot.
Sam Miguel 17-10-2004, 17:54 I spent many an interesting hour in the Wap.
One thing I remember was the struggle to move your feet after a while. If you stood in one place - due to the copious amounts of beer-spills on the carpet, you stuck to the floor. And I mean stuck!
WallBuilder 17-10-2004, 20:21 Why do you think that there was a metal bar running along the base of the bar? Sometimes you could wait ages for someone to notice you waving your money around, One foot on the bar and then you could lever yourself free of the sticky flooring, although it did come in useful as well if you were height challenged.

I do recall ine hilarious incident when a girl wearing stilleto boots attempted to haul herself up on that rail, and in the process managed to slip and wreck both heels of her expensive boots, and ended up upside down on the floor. Had to brush her down (you know what the floor was like) and she was so upset her heels were x-heels.
WallBuilder 18-10-2004, 16:31 There were a few incidents with regard to that bar, usually someone slipping off it and their long waited for drink being spilt across the bar and floor. One poor unfortunate somehow slipped off the bar and managed to come down and crack their chin on the red formica bar top. Memorable for the vast amounts of blood and the unsuccessful search for a missing tooth. I bet people don't remember Clive's pet rat one evening going on walk about, scaring some customers silly as it ran around hiding under the wooden cubicle seats.
beansforyou 22-10-2004, 15:46 OMG this thread has really taken me back, as did the Rebels one!!
I used to go in the Wap nearly every night 10-12 years ago, and the sportsman/yorkie.
Is Ken still Djing Under the Boardwalk (i've still got his 12" copy of Freebird I will get it back to him one day)
Not ventured past the door since Olga's retirement 'do'
Ned Ludd 22-10-2004, 17:03 The only thing interesting about the Wap was the clientele. The ale was disgusting and anyone who thinks that Newcy Brown is a decent drink needs their head looking at..... in fact it probably has been looked at if you supped it for more than 12 months:P
PS: One of the Druids was sent down for stabbing some geezer to death on an East Coast camp site...so I don't reckon they were all that tame!

Ken can now be seen DJ'ing Thursday nights in the SPORTSMAN on Cambridge STreet. Under the Boardwalk became another closure statistic about 2 months ago now.....

We could never figure out why it was always warm in the NMB, when it came off the cold shelf. I got a job behind the bar, and found the cold shelf was infront of the radiator!!!!

If you give a ten year old a knife they could be dangerous, the Druids just had a thug element that obviously thought carrying a knife was clever. If I remember the story correctly it was a case of several Druids onto one guy.
Four of them went to court but only one of them was locked up as one of the others broke one of their most important rules and told the police what had happened.
There was the time when two of these hardened outlaw motorcyclists??? were thrown off a bus for being obnoxious. Like a lot of bullies their toughness came out when they were in a group or were showing off to one another.

Just thought I'd bump this back up a bit as there have been another few pics put on the site in the last few months. I'm sure all the aging rockers on the Forum will get a rosy glow when they spot characters from their ill-spent youth!!
The name of the band by the way is really bugging me, some-one must remember them.
I am a very proud owner (just like the forum) of a wapentake t-shirt, had it that long its shrunk! or ive grown, which ever you belive. watched def-leppard play there years ago.
Oh yes the wap...At 13 & 14 my friends and I could get on our black stuff, do our heavey eyeliner etc and get served there no probs. The good old days.I couldn't keep my newquay brown down to well though!Yuk.

Not entirely true!!
You could if you looked closely see the odd punk and goth in there and even trendies. Some of the trendies came in knowing what to expect but it was always far more amusing when a novice trendy came in disappeared down the stairs and we'd place bets on how long it'd be before they'd be coming back up, some of them did an abruptabout turn whilst still on the stairs.
One goodd thing about the wap was the lack of drunken fighting and the way most of us all knew if not by name but certainly by sight each other.
thomsongirl 05-06-2005, 23:22 I spent most nights of my teenage years in the Wap and then Rebels. I remember the wet floors from the blocked toilets and jumping the puddles when we wore our suede boots!
WallBuilder 05-06-2005, 23:39 I think strix here on the forum had the identical complaint my query to her and now to you was 'why didn't you wear leather boots preferably thigh length when coming to the wap'?
Oh and at least in the girls it was just puddles in the blokes it was a lake and all the plastic pint pots in the urinals that had to be fished out at the end of the night to go back behind the bar. Guess why I drank out of bottles?
thomsongirl 05-06-2005, 23:51 Being 15 at the time, my pocket money didn't stretch to leather! The suede boots were knee high and we wore them on our glam nights. Most of the time we were in doc martins or para boots, so it wasn't a problem on them nights.
I think the puddles were from the mens that we used to jump over!

WallBuilder 06-06-2005, 00:03 Obviously didn't have a gullible boyfriend then? Leather boots are horribly expensive as I discovered to my cost.
I agree most of the 'moisture' ???? did come from the guy's loo. I could name names and say who it was that used to block the toilets with loo paper and then repeatedly flush them and plastic pint pots .could cause some backflow as well.
So the toilets could be un-usable the stand up urinal was more than squelchy underfoot which left only one place, thank goodness for wash basins.

Cracking pictures....they should have gone to spec savers. In the late 70’s I had John Lennon type glasses...I thought I looked really cool until someone said I reminded her of Himmler.

Anyone got any picture from the 70's...?

Happy Days (And Nights!)
Hi Wallbuilder. Just found this forum after quite a lot of Google searching! Thanks for posting the url of the site with all the amazing Wap photos, brings back buckets of memories. BTW, in regard to your comments about the Druids Motorcycle Club and the Blues.
It's the 'Sheffield' Blue Angels not 'Yorkshire' blues which were the club which existed before the Druids, I believe they were associated with the Glasgow Blue Angels as both chapters where seen partying in the Minerva on various occasions.
The Druids weren't 'pretending' to be Hells Angels, Hells Angels and 'Outlaw' Bike Clubs are completely different entities, if you were familier with biker politics or you'd been in that scene you'd know this :)
Anyway, 'Greg Hughes' aka 'Animal' who was incidentally the Sheffield Blue Angels 'Sergent At Arms' in the late 70's went on to create the Druids with the blessing of 'Slim' who was the President of the Blues at that time.
If I remember correctly... Slim ran FTW Motorcycles in Sheff in the early to mid eighties somewhere near the Sheff United ground with his mate Carnaby, which leads me on to this question - Anyone know Kate Goldberg? Get in touch if you see this post Kate - Luga owes you some money.
Some other names I can remember from the scene at the Wapentake were 'Big Mick' who was a bouncer with a bald head. Dino 'Druid', Mex 'Druid'(who incidentally got framed for a murder on the east coast), Sparrow, Laney, Boggy, Big John Richardson (Afro and beard), Rod from Gosforth Valley (Bricklayer and Triumph fanatic), David Tollerfield from Milton (My good mate for many years) Little Morag from the Students Union, Bucko, Kenny, Scots Mick from Elsecar, Lee 'Druid'(Who has since sadly passed away), Gonzo, Big Allen (Who lived in a house called Christmas Cottage), Keef (Keith La Blonde - UFO and Quo fan), Danny (Drummer with local 80's band 'Fixer', Doc, Ginny (Small girl with long straight ginger hair - used to stand by the pinball machine on Friday and Saturday nights), Johnny the Fox, Floyd, Twink and a host of other people whos names escape me 25 years on - i'll keep adding to the list as I remember.
Yeah, and I remember all the great times at the Penthouse, KGB Club, Nelson, Stonehouse, Limit Club and the smell of patchouli oil on all those crazy hippy chicks in the peace gardens :)
If only....

I remember the Wap well, but sadly these pics were after my time. I went in during the mid to late 70s, and I wont repeat my post from the Sheffield night club thread.
I spent many years and made many friends in the Wap. I miss that place so much, I stopped going out when it closed. I did spend a few nights under the boardwalk but it didn't really compare. The Wap was my home from home since I was 13 years old, I knew every regular face in there and most of the names, it was the one place I could go alone and KNOW I would meet up with friends even without planning.
andymay you seem very disapproving of the Wap and rock scene, but there isn't another pub in town that has or ever will have the sense of "community" that the wapentake held, anyone who dared to walk through the door was welcome and fights were rare. That can't be said for most places where if I turned up looking as I did in those days, pink hair and knee high docs, I'd either be turned away or treated as an outcast. I feel sorry for you for having missed out on the experience ;)
Incidentally, I've recently heard a rumour that the Wap is coming back, as it used to be. If the present owners of that place have any sense they'll do it. Has anyone else heard anything?
do Bob and Dawn still run the Casbah?

no55sammy1 14-10-2005, 21:37 HEY BINKY, WALLBUILDER,
let me know if i am wrong [im sure you will] FACT the legendry wap, was DERELICT and didnt sell one drink for 3 years, FACT OLGA use to kick everybody out at 10.30 so the wapers could go to rebels:confused: FACT OLGA worked for trusthouse forte, the hotel chain that owned the grosvenor [SHE PERSONALLY DIDNT HAVE ANY OVERHEADS i.e rent, rates, etc]FACT THE PEOPLE,who opened up THE WAP, after 3 years of dereliction [i do not know these people]called the place THE WAPENTAKE [lasted 8/9 months] :help: FACT THE CASBAH is NOT A TRENDY DANCE CLUB:heyhey: FACT you can drink in the CASBAH till 2.am not 10.30 FACT THE CASBAH IS PACKED at the weekends FACT it has now been around for 8 years . WHY DONT WE GO TELL THE OWNERS TO TURN IT BACK INTO THE WAPENTAKE [kick us all out at 10.30] invite the DRUIDS :loopy: STAND BACK AND SEE HOW LONG THE PLACE IS OPEN:wave:
Yellowrose 14-10-2005, 22:22 The Casbah is OK, but it doesnt get going until 11 and then you have to pay to get in. Add that extended drinking time to the price of a taxi home and its an expensive night out for some of us. So its not like the Wap used to be in that respect.

Actually Olga retired BEFORE the Wap closed down and became the Casbah. I don't remember it being derelict, I remember the last night of the Wap, I remember before Olga retired there were rumours of the owners wanting her out so they could revamp the place and make it into yet another boring wine bar type affair, could have just been rumours but that's what I remember. I went into the Casbah ONCE after it opened, never went back. The drinks prices had increased far too much for my liking, that was enough for me to kiss it goodbye. The Casbah may be open till 2am, yippee, so are most clubs. Yes it did close at 10:30pm in the week, 11 at weekends, but in those days all pubs were closed by 11pm, and all nightclubs were closed by 2am. The closing time wasn't an issue at all.
I dont know where you get your FACTs from sammy but you certainly dont remember it like I do. From the bitter tone in your messages I'm guessing you were thrown out of there once or twice by Olga who, despite being quite strict at times, was in fact loved by almost all of the regulars in there. :P

THE WAPENTAKE WAS CLOSED FOR 3 YEARS, it reopened IN 98 AS THE WAPENTAKE this lasted for around 8 months it then became THE CASBAH, i dont know why this happened must have been a BUISNESS DECISION:confused: BEST ASK THOSE WHO ARE INVOLED DOWN THERE,if its the same people  hope thats cleared up a couple of rumours BINKY:thumbsup:

We must have seen each other hundreds of times as I was a regular between 1971 ish (after the Buccaneer) to 1981 when I left Sheffield.
We used to stand at the end of the bar furthest from the entrance, we were all Wednesdayites, although one of my mates Stuart Beresford was a Unitedite.

whatsupthen 14-03-2006, 23:24 well yes a fantastic place got done for drinking under age 1976 shock horror but originally started my underage drinking campaign in the buccaneer, moved to Nelson and moved around Museum, Minerva, The Raven. Definition of Wapentake:-
Wapentakes and wards
A wapentake is a term derived from the Old Norse, the rough equivalent of an Anglo-Saxon hundred. The word denotes an administrative meeting place, typically a crossroads or a ford in a river where attendance or voting would be denoted or conducted by the show of weapons.
The counties of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland and Lincolnshire were divided into wapentakes, just as most of the remainder of England was divided into hundreds.
In Yorkshire, a Norse wapentake usually replaced several Anglo-Saxon hundreds. This process was complete by 1086 in the North and West Ridings, but continued in the East Riding until the mid 12th century.
In some counties, such as Leicestershire, the wapentakes recorded at the time of the Domesday Book evolved into hundreds later on. In others, such as Lincolnshire, the term remained in use.
The term ward was used in a similar manner in the four northern counties of Cumberland, Durham, Northumberland and Westmorland.

The thread is about the pub not the etemology of the name. Your kind offering of the definition of the word doesn't actually add anything to the thread. ;)
Other people read forums, or did you think that you were the only one. If you can possibly imagine a person from Sussex reading the topic and wondering what Wapentake meant, I would think that they would be grateful for an answer. There is something called, "The bigger picture".

There is something called, "The bigger picture".
Would suggest people in Sussex read the thread, the first post refers to it being a watering hole and links to pictures of said pub. (Not rocket science even for a southerner  )
As I said before the etemology of Wapentake has absolutely nothing to do with the pub at all other than they share the name. :)
The way this thread is going I might just start one asking for information on the "Cock inn" :P
Can we now get back on topic?
fox20thc 29-05-2006, 13:08 Yes we can :D I just found a collage of wap pictures all pasted onto a clipframe card, oh happy days. Makes you wish we had a time machine somehow and a pic with the poster for a wet tshirt contest in rebs later on, £50 1st prize ;)
fox20thc 18-06-2006, 14:38 Finally repatriated my scanner and got my pics online (some of them) have a look at the wap/rebs/mailcoach pics see if you recognise anyone :P

WallBuilder 18-06-2006, 21:53 Just been looking at the pics fox and although I was not a regular in the Mailcoach one or two do seem to be stirring old memories.
I was wondering whether you were going to contribute them to the Rock Reunited site as I'm sure the site designer would love to include them and as news of that site has now spread across the world it would probably bring back memories to loads of people.

Ah well when we took the camera out it was usually because we had mischief planned. Such as handcuffing Dolby to the bar of the Mailcoach sticking a broken bit of chair in his mouth and whipping him with our lovely bullwhips ;)
You never know what I may uncover :hihi:

Mmmm, one of them looks a litle like me, not sure though. Number 24, the bloke on the far left with mouth wide open laughing. I used to wear a denim jacket with Stone Free on the back in black sequins and Led Zep below that in felt, what was I thinking, I sewed them all on myself...
My memory of the 80s is very hazy for some reason.

The gentlemen (i use the term loosely) either side of my little sister. are Spencer and Jay
That would explain why I don't recognise them then!
It always felt a little too 'retro' in the evening...... preffered to go in Saturday lunchtimes with the 'Mouse' but preferred The Limit or Rebels
I was "nicked" for drinking under age in the Wop in 1969
melthebell 13-07-2006, 21:31 I was "nicked" for drinking under age in the Wop in 1969
id have been underage then too if i was in the wap
i was born in 69 :)
i was nicked for underage drinking in 1985 instead
or was it 1986 one of the two, id just left school anyway
mr_blue_owl 16-07-2006, 12:39 I was a regular 1971 -1981 (l left UK in 81)
I recognise quite a few people from the pics.
Some names of guys I remember:
John Anthony (with his legendary VW shaggin Wagon)
Mad Alec Bowie (Last remnant of the PrettyThings Fan Club)
Jinxie (still in touch with him)
George Webster (went on to open the Limit)
Paul Wood
Mary Mooney
Stuart Beresford (Blade fan but nice guy nevertheless)
Mark Burkinshaw (Shears)
Pat Griffin (my best mate - still in touch)
Lou Trigg and his tall dopey mate
Graham Kaler
Frank Cross
Ok. I used to go down the Wap from about 1980 onwards and was in there most nights. I mainly hung around with Haze, Brian (Snake), Mick Ledgwick (RIP) and Ken (I used to cover behind the decks for him on occasion too). I could usually be found on the table footie with Haze & Tim Guest.
And if it means anything, I was the bloke that worked at Carlsboro.
And the bloke who worked behind the bar for a while 'till I got ****** one night (Olga wasn't too happy).
Anyone remember me ?
Oh yeah, who the hell were you lot ;)
Nick Scott
melthebell 24-08-2006, 10:41 i had a look at the outside of the wap on monday when i was walking round town.....with a tear in my eye :P

Until recently he was still doing the Sportsman on Thursdays, but no longer ....... trying to find him as soon I'll need to borrow a twin vinyl deck for a mate's birthday ........ good old Kenwood Rocks, as his moniker became among a few friends ........
Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am the redhead with deidrie specs, taken at parties at Roys I should say? I recognise so many people on here it is amazing!!!
Thanks to the peeps who contacted me, Till Man and Wall Builder - god was it really 20 years ago!. I cannot send you a personal reply yet as I have not been a member long enough:mad: system won't let me.
I wish there were still places like the Wap where everyone knew everyone and it was such a laugh, and Rebs. Pubs are so boring now I hardly bother!
best wishes to all who know me

WallBuilder 05-09-2006, 18:09 I know the Rock reunited site has been causing huge amounts of amusement for an awful lot of people. The scary thing is that plenty of the people featured now have kids who are in their late teens and can't believe what their parents looked like.
I've also had the oppertunity of seeing some current pics of some of the people featured which is really bizarre.
It may be twenty years or more but some of the memories are so fresh I can still remember obscure details.
If you like I could pass on your good wishes to the old crowd Andy, Bob, Rob, Kaz and Suz to name but a few.
Please do pass on my best wishes to all, do you see them often, I would love to know what they are all up to, married, kids etc????? When I am allowed to do personal messages I'll tell you more about what I've been up to!
Is there a pub where the 'old crowd' still go or are they past all that!!!!!
debs x
WallBuilder 05-09-2006, 23:58 Some if not several of the old wrinklies can be found in the Nelson at the weekend.
I've sent you a pm with a few details
I've mentioned your name to a couple of people who remember you perfectly well and want to know are you still riding a motorbike?
Some-one in fact more than one has suggested putting a current pic up next to the pic of their younger selves, not sure that would be a good idea probably too scary.
Chris Houseman for example has changed beyond all recognition
Didn't get the pm! can you resend?
thanks

Hi, what's nice exactly? The fact that redeb and I knew each other years ago or morre likely the fact that Rock Reunited has pics of some really odd hairdo's and we never really looked that young did we?
Clarification please
formax - what you on about?????????????
Till Man 07-09-2006, 20:40 Hey RedDeb, welcome to the forum. Why did it take you so long to find us?
:headbang:

Lesley
WallBuilder 07-09-2006, 23:27 See how many people remember the Wap fondly and so to ALL these people
How come you aren't contributing any pics of yourselves to Rock Reunited. Come on where are all those dodgy hairstyles and bell bottom flares and all those printed teashirts, or was that just me!!
Lesley??? Six foot or there-abouts, blonde hair and furry moon boots.
Tillman if you check reddeb's posts you'll see she mentions a house abroad, I think if I had a choice between sitting in front of a computer or lazing by the pool in the sun I think the pool would win.
merrydown 26-11-2006, 11:14 Oh, happy memories! I practically lived in the Wap during the 70s and worked behind the bar 78/79ish, so probably knew/served quite a few of you lot. I certainly remember some of the names mentioned.
What's happened to the Rock Reunited site cos I can't get any of the photos to load up, which is a shame cos I'd love to see how many of the faces I recognised?

merrydown 26-11-2006, 18:39 Thanks Zinc. I'm so embarrassed at what an E-tard I am........ I wasn't scrolling down to see the photos.
Although I remember a few of the faces, I think most of them were after my time.
muddycoffee 26-11-2006, 18:55 Yes we have not had any new entries on rock reunited since Debs and Friends in June. Come on people don't be shy. We can scan them for you if you don't have a scanner.
Have a dig in those shoeboxes full of old photies.
Tommy (Bass) 27-11-2006, 00:20 Is it Russ and Roy who do the Rock re-united thing? I spent just about everynight of my teenage life (and early 20's) in the Wap....it was a good laugh looking at some of those pictures but some of that hair should carry a government health warning.
muddycoffee 27-11-2006, 07:08 Is it Russ and Roy who do the Rock re-united thing? I spent just about everynight of my teenage life (and early 20's) in the Wap....it was a good laugh looking at some of those pictures but some of that hair should carry a government health warning.
Nearly...
The Rock Reunited original concept was to feature old pictures which were taken 10-30 years ago in the rock scene in Sheffield. It was dreamed up by Steve and Roy on the 14th April 2004, when Roy sent some pictures to Steve by email of his friends from around 1980 when he was part of the Rock scene in Sheffield. Many of the pictures show people with lots of long hair and thin youthful figures, which in many cases are now consigned to history. He also actively canvassed some of his friends and got more collections of photos to expand the project substantially.
Steve who had also varied rock pictures to contribute, of his times between 1988 and 1990 when he was big haired and regular on the Sheffield rock scene, added his to the brew and continued to get in touch with his friends to get more pics.
As more people scanned their old photos, the site gained more and more pages, and as a free site, which is just for fun, we invite everyone who is interested to send in their own pics or send a link to us, of any other website with relevence to rock in Sheffield or near Sheffield.

That is the story so far.

Tommy (Bass) 28-11-2006, 00:17 Ahhhhh....so as my picture appears on there several times without my permission which one gets to pay me my royalties? ;)
WallBuilder 28-11-2006, 08:42 Royalties?
The main problem seems to be people claiming compensation as they'd done themselves a mischief laughing so hard at the hairstyles, clothing fashions and general look of youth and innocence and that's when they're looking at pictures of themselves.
Just out of interest which one are you, I can remember a 'Tommy' who played in a band but I don't think you can be him as I don't think I've seen his fdace. There again I'm getting older and the grey natter is now severely on the decline.
muddycoffee 28-11-2006, 09:32 Ahhhhh....so as my picture appears on there several times without my permission which one gets to pay me my royalties? ;)
Royal - ties ?
Well If you want, we can meet you on the steps of the old Wap with a bottle of newcastle brown and a broadsword. Baptise tour brow you with the brown, and knight you into the brotherhood of aging rockers.
But then we'd all be even more tragic. :hihi:
muddycoffee 28-11-2006, 09:42 Actually I have just consulted the Rock Reunited Legal advisor, and it turns out that £0.0002 is not legal tender so you are going to have to wait a further 98 years before I can pay you your penny. :D
Tommy (Bass) 29-11-2006, 02:59 Royalties?

Russ or Roy should know that I would NEVER waste a bottle of dog, which always came in handy when I won the Newky Brown drinking competitions. I remember some bird giving me a blowjob on the fire escape cos she thought the Tshirt I won (as well as the free Dog) was a Newky Tshirt and she wanted it. She was a tad dissapointed when it turned out to be a K Cider promo shirt hehehehehehe and I still didn't let her keep it...infact I think that was also the night that Olga caught us?
I miss the Wap....I miss Ken the DJ playing the TISWAS version of Bright Eyes for me or anything by AC/DC then all piling back to his house for more beer, pizza and sitting up all night watching comedy videos...I miss wading through the flooded toilets. I miss Felix buying me beer cos I was always skint. I miss the pinball machine and Soldier always stealing the plug off it when someone beat his high score....I miss all the birds in short skirts.....I miss the Xmas eve pissups.....and most of all I miss you scarecrow....oops....just for a moment there I was in the Wizard Of Oz ::hihi: It was bad enough when they stopped selling chip butties at dinner times around the end of the 80's.
Russ or Roy if you read this PM me and we'll go for a pint and just so we can remeniss about old times I'll even let yous pay for them just for the nostalga element and if you still see Chris Denham....bring him along cos he's a top bloke
DenadaInnit 29-11-2006, 17:33 Ooo fond memories. I remember about 1979 ish being friends with 5 girls called Julie.
Also remember that the Wap closed on Saturday after lunch and reopened at teatime. Our lot used to go to the Wimpey bar and then either go to the pictures for a bit or to the peace gardens for a mooch. One afternoon .... a lady with flat black shoes wandered over .... didn't much like what was in our fags which resulted in two of us getting a fine for £30 quid!
shefftenner 27-12-2006, 11:37 can remember running into the wap to fight a hippy(me a cardboard mod)came face 2 face with the biggest biker ever **** me self!
Aww these pics bring back some great memories all young and care free what a way to be.i remember the twins and bob the dj off the photos but dont recognise anyone else, god the hair styles are wicked ive just been showing my daughter she just laughed when i told her that is how her that my ex"s hair looked like that hes now bald lol.
WallBuilder 27-12-2006, 21:53 If you ever see your ex you can tell him he's not alone. there are a few baldies around nowadays. I'm of course putting this down to loads of bike riding with a crash helmet on. The balding thing then isn't a problem but the middle aged spread and the over whelming desire to start rubishing todays music as being noisy rubbish is almost overwhelming. I'm sure my mother used to say the same sort of thing when I was barricaded in my room with Rush blasting out.
I often wonder what happened to the twins and those poor old long suffering b/f's they used to have.
muddycoffee 27-12-2006, 22:01 If you ever see your ex you can tell him he's not alone. there are a few baldies around nowadays. I'm of course putting this down to loads of bike riding with a crash helmet on..
Rubbish,
Crash helmets ! :o
baldness is entirely down to drinking too much cider. :hihi:
I saw one of the twins a few year ago had"nt changed much just had a few more lines on her face lol i have seen bob the dj on a few different occasions he lives at low edges and hires out a mini bus now still a nice guy.yer my hair was always in a tangled mess after a run on the bike, but those days wer great and ive got very happy memories of them.I bet i know you then scary eh?:)
WallBuilder 28-12-2006, 11:41 The twins were really nice though could be slightly intimidating to some of us feeble men folk if they wanted. They had a similar sized friend whose claim to fame was winning a wet t-shirt competition at Rebels.
Oh and Muddy not wishing to worry you but quite a few of the bike crowd who used to go tomatlock Bath are now well on the way to becoming baldies and most of them drank newcastle brown!
Now come on Rosie give us some clues or better still contribute a picture or pictures to the site and then we'll know who you are. Lots of people knew me and [and this is scary] they still recognise me today.
I got engaged in the Wap, and I mean properly engaged........bluddie Olga never got me a drink though:o
WallBuilder 28-12-2006, 21:52 I've heard of some stunts to get a drink out of Olga but asking her to marry you......... marriage????
I bet you just liked the way she looked in that grey uniform
evamermaid 04-02-2007, 11:23 My mate used to out with Brian with the pythons, wasn't he a coalminer? She met him on the top of a bus. I remember the Wapp with its swimming pool style floor (probably precaution against all the beer swilling around). Plastic glasses, terrible beer, loud music... found the Nelson a bit more cosy.
fox20thc 04-02-2007, 14:47 I had a flashback when I was in the Corp the other week and treated myself to a bottle of Newcastle Brown.. and they even trusted me with the bottle..:P
monkeypox 05-02-2007, 13:19 Being 15 at the time, my pocket money didn't stretch to leather! The suede boots were knee high and we wore them on our glam nights. Most of the time we were in doc martins or para boots, so it wasn't a problem on them nights.
I think the puddles were from the mens that we used to jump over!
I celebrated my 16th Birthday in the Wap my friends had bought me a 'happy 18th' card so as not to look suss although only one of us was legally allowed in there.
Went along to the Casbah recently on a trip back home and had a moment of nostalgia followed by a feeling I really did not belong there, probably far too old now.
steadiman 05-02-2007, 14:34 Moved down from the Buccaneer when it closed and the wap became the second home from home for us. Remember George DJing, Dave Prout and Petal
Paul Royston Terry and Kath, Gerry and Audrey( who always wore her Afghan coat). I was married then and myself and Lyn used to frequent the place most evenings. Cheers to all the old Buc and Wap crowd
Apparently wearing colours or patches and pretending to be Angels would of
annoyed true Hells Angels somewhat.
It's pretty obvious to me and others on here that you know diddlysquat
regarding biker politics with that statement. I guess you think the Sheffield
Blues were Hells Angels as well eh?
Hells Angels and Outlaws were two completely different entities back then,
nowadays it's a little different. How can you make those sort of comments
if you don't know anything the lifestyle, or have never been in a bike club
yourself?
Just one other minor point if the Druids were a motorcycle gang then how
come some of them didn't own a motorbike and relied on the buses to get
around?
Back in those days most of us ran Pre-unit British motorcycles, we built
and repaired through the winter ready for the summer runs, any idea how
rare and expensive parts were for our machines? Have you any idea how
long it takes to build a motorcycle from just the frame up with only half
the available parts?
I personally used the Sheffield busses regularly during the winter to ferry
up to a hundred weight (on one occasion) of various old bike parts down to
D&H Motorcycles on Abbydale Road to trade or sell, just so I could get the
bits I needed for my own motorcycles.
Luckily a lass named Sparrow who was married to the Druids second in
command I think saw what was going on and warned the prospects off.
The President of the Druids wife was 'Sparrow'. To be honest, prospects
were a pain in the butt most of the time, most didn't stick around for long
anyway, lucky she was around to bail you out.
Later on one of the prospects did become a full fledged Druid and he was a
nasty little man name of Deano if anyone remembers him.
He wasn't really that nasty, he was one of the more sedate members
of the group.
Unless they either took off their colours or hid them under another jacket.
No Hells Angel would have ever done this.
Untrue. like Outlaws, Hells Angels only wear their colours when on club
business.
Most of us weren't 'Unpleasent louts'! We loved motorcycles, the lifestyle,
the women, the music, the beer and the camaraderie. There is far more
unpleasentness in pubs and clubs nowadays than way back then.
WallBuilder 08-02-2007, 15:40 Hi Zinc
I may not of been a member of any biker clubs or been up to speed with biker politics but I am very aware through personal experience of how some of the druids used to behave and how they were thought of by plenty of people.
I could of sworn Gren/ Greg [sorry can't remember exact name] the president rode a suzuki.
A couple of the more unpleasant characters took offense at one of my friends at a party and stubbed their cigarettes out on his face and that's just one example of what a lovely bunch they were.
They were asked not to come into the Wap, the Yorkshiremans Arms, The Sportsman if they were displaying the druid logo on their backs amongst others.
I know they used to go in the Underground and the Foresters but they weren't popular in the Hornblower after a nasty moment when the one in the duffel coat [animal?] took offense at a student .
You have your memories and I have mine so we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Hi WallBuilder, thanks for your reply.
I may not of been a member of any biker clubs or been up to speed with biker
politics but I am very aware through personal experience of how some of the
druids used to behave and how they were thought of by plenty of people.
Well, things must have gone downhill after I left. I personally had a lot of
friends outside the bike club scene both in and around Sheffield, when I
was with the Druids we were all allowed to drink in the Wap.
I could of sworn Gren/ Greg [sorry can't remember exact name] the president rode a suzuki.
Greg did ride a black Suzuki and a Kawasaki for a while, I think he got
completely miffed with the constant roadside maintenance and repair
old british bikes require every 70 miles or so.
If I remember correctly, he straight swapped a Triumph for that Suzuki with
another club member who owned a couple of bikes.
A couple of the more unpleasant characters took offense at one of my friends
at a party and stubbed their cigarettes out on his face and that's just one
example of what a lovely bunch they were.
I can't comment on this WallBuilder, I think these events happened after
1981/82 which was about the time I left the Druids.
They were asked not to come into the Wap, the Yorkshiremans Arms, The
Sportsman if they were displaying the druid logo on their backs amongst
others.
Again, when I was there we weren't banned from any of the pubs/clubs
around Sheffield.
I know they used to go in the Underground and the Foresters but they
weren't popular in the Hornblower after a nasty moment when the one in the
duffel coat [animal?] took offense at a student . You have your memories and

I'm not disputing that the events you mentioned didn't happened, the
reason I posted initially was just to correct some of the details which were
incorrect in your post, but please don't tar every Druid with the same brush.
I'm not denying that there were 'some' members who were completely
'off the rails', some of them were just normal bikers who loved the scene.
If only some of you guys who drank in the Wap knew exactly how much
trouble we prevented coming through those doors in the early days, most
of you were completely oblivious as to what went on upstairs.
Finally repatriated my scanner and got my pics online (some of them) have a look at the wap/rebs/mailcoach pics see if you recognise anyone :P
