hello lesley ! yes i too have a underactive thyroid .....it can take quite sometime to get the level of levothyroxine that you need correct ! you should go for regular blood checks to see if the amount you have been given is enough ......and even still the the battle with the weight you have gained can be really hard ......i know this too ! good luck sweetie your not alone in the battle of the thyroid !

lesley1967 13-02-2007, 23:58 yes ive just had a blood test and it has to be repeated in 3 mths so yes its going to take a while:(
HappyHoosier 14-02-2007, 04:09 I go in Tuesday for a blood test... been on thyroid medicine since October. No weight loss yet... I am supposed to be exercising though.:(
I definitely have more energy. Good luck.
Lesley - 100mg of Thyroxine is only a moderate dose, so dont expect miracles fast. As HappyHoosier says, exercise and diet are also important...an underactive thyroid gland does indeed slow down metabolism leading to weight gain, but other factors i.e. consuming more calories than you're burning off will have an equal if not greater effect.
My mum was diagnosed as underactive and wanted an easy fix with Thyroxine. When it didnt happen she used to stop taking the drugs for about a week before each blood test so that it appeared that she had very low levels of thyroxine and the doctor upped her dose each time - in the end he realised what she was doing and wasnt very happy with her!

exsercise is the bestthing to bring an underactive thyroid back up, plus good foods like green veg which has alot of iron in them
see i suffer from the other way round mine is quiet active and find it hard to relax.....
Hi yes, I have an underactive thyroid. I have been on thyroxine for about a year.
I have always had a problem with weight, but this last year it has just got ridiculous. I think I made my thyroid problem an excuse for not bothering.
I have recently started eating healthier, rather than dieting, with a focus on feeling better rather than losing weight. I am now losing about a pound a week .. its not much, but I feel well and am not struggling with a diet as such. I am eating smaller portions, and have cut out chocolate and ice cream.
sheffchick 14-02-2007, 08:28 Yes I have it too, Ive had it for about 4 years now. It affects my weight too if I let it. Going to the gym a few times a week helps tho. I can usually tell if my levels are low as i become sleepy alot, have little energy and my voice goes croaky. One good thing is you get free prescriptions or rest of ur life!!
:)
yep dicky thyroid here too and approaching 18 stone, I really need to exercise more
oh one thing I learned the hard way which is probably blindingly obvious but I wasn't thinking straight, take the supplements in the morning and not at night, I used to lie awake all night thanks to that until I woke up enough to figure it out

If the underactivity is due to chemical issues, excercise will do no good at all - the relevant drugs are needed to supplement what the thyroid isn't supplying.
Once the Thyroid Hormones come back up then excercise is more likely to help weight loss.
deelightful3 14-02-2007, 17:37 been on thyroid tablets for about 12 yrs now, took quite a while to sort dosage out, been on 150-175 for a few years, but had blood took in december and its not right again so have to go back on monday for blood taking again
lesley1967 14-02-2007, 19:04 has anyone taken trimmers aswell as thyroxine? is this dangerous?i thought it might be ok due to the fact that trimmers speeds up the metabolism
little malc 14-02-2007, 19:26 Hi! everyone, as it seems the only fella on this subject, would love any comments, I went to docs suffering from aches and pains rather like arthritis, and often very tired. He took blood tests. the result was my thyroid readingwas 5.5, which he says is just on the cusp, no treatment, but to be monitored with another test in 4 months.
My cholestrol level also was up at 6, have any of you also experienced extreme aches and stiffness, is this a typical symptom, or am I likely to have something else?
whitewitch 17-12-2008, 22:01 Just done a search and found this thread. I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid in September, Ive just been back for my first 3 monthly blood test. Ive only put a couple of pounds on in weight so Im still slim, I still feel tired but not as bad as I did, and my brain fog appears to be better, my problem is my nails are like tissue paper, my skin is excessively dry and my hair has thinned and lost its shine. My colleague was reading about Sea Kelp tablets, it improves skin and encourages growth and weight loss, I was wondering if any of you who have the same condition have taken these alongside your levothyroxine, if you have, have you noticed any difference :)
I was diagnosed last month but have yet to start treatment because my TSH reading wasn't high enough for them to start me until they have another reading showing that it's persistently low.
My nails and hair are really thin and weedy too- but I have the advantage that the chemo I had a few years ago damaged my follicles and so my hair is now curly- the curls cover up all the thinning spots on my head!

When do you have to go back med? in another 2 months? I said my hair was thinning but I dont think I meant that. Ive got straight fine hair, but alot of it, over the past few months Ive been losing hair, so It now looks limp with no body. I also retain fluid in my ankles and feet so have to wear those sexy support up to the knee stockings for work (as I do 10 hour shifts and spend alot of that time driving) Ive read that Kelp used to be given to people with thyroid trouble, just wondering whether I should try it or not
lesley1967 17-12-2008, 22:33 hi,well ive since had a course of reductil which i lost a stone and a half and loads of inches i was feeling great......then my weight seemed to stay the same so my doc took me off them, slowly i started gaining weight back having the contraceptive implant didnt help i think this was the real cause of my weight going back on,so i had that out! lol still weight going on so doc let me try another month of reductil but although i hardly ate anything on them my weight stayed the same!!!! doc refered me to endocrinologist in which they told me my thyroid level was great so im still here dont really eat a lot, weight still a problem im at a miss to why i never lose even a couple of pounds lol anyone whos tryed anything whos had the same problem please tell me about them....x
