View Full Version : Substitute Yarn
dhender746 13-02-2007, 08:50 Hello Everyone
My name is Debra and I live in Oakland, California in the United States. I hope to make friends within this Knitting Circle :|
My reason for writing is I have a serious problem where I can not afford the number of yarn that I must purchase in order to knit a beautiful sweater I found on the internet. Here is the complete break down of the skein of yard:
The name of the yarn is Berroco Softwist (sorry).....
Fiber: 59% Rayon, 41% wool
Hank Weight: 1.75 oz / 50 g
Hank Lenghth: 100 yds / 92 m
Gauge: 5 sts = 1"
20 sts and 28 rows = 4" (10 cm)
Needle Size: 8 (US) / 5 mm
If its at all possible would or could someone please help me find different yarns with more yardage.
Thank You
Debra
Hi Debra,
What is the name of the yarn? Also, what pattern is it that you want to knit? Finding a substitute yarn is very often possible but you need to consider how the knitted fabric will hang. If you could let the forum have those details then I think one of us should be able to help you locate an alternative.
Jill
Wool4brains 13-02-2007, 13:58 Hello Debra, you're probably asleep right now, time zones being what they are.
Is it something like Berroco Softtwist?

I would have thought that whatever you substitute will need to have the shine of the rayon to make the item look anything like the model in the pattern. There are lots of yarns out there that will work to 20 stitches to the inch but if you substitute something that is all wool (or microfibre or whatever) it isn't going to look the same. If the sweater pattern is calling to you because of the styling that's one thing but if you are loving it because of the drape and sheen then you're going to need a yarn of similar composition.
As both JillM and Wool4brains have your question well in hand, I'll stick to saying hello and welcome to the Knitting Group  . You certainly win the prize for the most far-away knitter in the group! We have members up in Scotland, on the south coast, in the Midlands and up near Durham, but you're the first from over the Atlantic.
dhender746 13-02-2007, 20:01 The name of the yarn is: Berroco Softwist (sorry)....and the name of the sweater is called (Terra) which is located in the Berroco Yarn Free Pattern... Its purple and the bottom half of the sweater is zip zag and cable. You would also love it.
dhender746 13-02-2007, 20:19 Hello Wool4Brains, thank you and JillM for your quick responds, your right it is Berrcoco Yarn, and its shines so I do agreed with you that it should have the same texture as the orignial yarn. Also, the name of the pattern is Tierra, which is a free pattern. The color of the pattern is purple.
One more thing what time is it right now in your country.
Thanks again ladies
dhender746 13-02-2007, 20:27 Hi Hecate,
Thank you so very much for welcoming me into your knitting group. Yeah, I guess its kind of funny seeing that your right since I am from the United States. But I love meeting people from other places. Have a super day and I hope to hear from you all soon.

When you posted this, it was 8.19 in the evening.
Debra - I saw this yarn at $3.96 which doesn't seem too bad for this kind of yarn. If you need something cheaper then I think you may have to take a look at it and wander round a few stores such as Michaels, A C Moore or Jo Anns and see if they have anything that feels similar with a similar yardage. There are so many yarns in the US that we don't see so regularly here that it is hard to suggest a particular yarn. Yarns I could suggest are actually more expensive than the original!
dhender746 17-02-2007, 19:34 Hi JillM
Sorry it took me so along in responding but am having problems with the internet. What was the name of the yarn that you found for $3.96?
Have a super weekend.

I think Jill meant that she saw the Berroco Softwist yarn for $3.96 :) .
This (http://www.yarnlove.com/catalog.php?item=48&new=yes&ret=catalog.php%3Fnew%3Dyes) shop has it on offer for $3.75, but it looks like they only have the one colour left.
dhender746 17-02-2007, 20:03 Hi Hecate
Thank you for the information, I truly appreciate all the help that I have received from everyone. I have been having problems with logging on to the internet.
But have a super weekend.

You're welcome, Debra :) . As Jill mentioned above, we only have a fraction of the lovely yarns in the UK that there are in the US. We were only moaning the other day that KnitPicks don't deliver to the UK :( . The stuff they sell is gorgeous.
Hope you get your internet problems fixed.

I don't understand why they don't deliver to the UK. Their stuff is so cheap compared to some of the stuff we have here. And considering that Knitty.com patterns seem to use their yarn fairly often you would have thought they could make a killing by posting here. *sigh* I must admit when my other half mentioned the possibility of moving to Canada the other day my first thought was 'Ooooh yarn shops!'.
