The only certainty is death, but having had premonitions of two of those now I'm gettinga bit freaked out. Titian 10-10-2004, 10:58 Yes , I do believe in fate and destiny. Here is why: http://www.anthroposophy.org.uk/book/chapter2.html Anthroposophy a philosophy that I can understand and relate to. saxon51 10-10-2004, 12:05 If fate exists, then free will and conscience doesn't! Sorry, couldn't help that. Fate, you see. Jamie 10-10-2004, 12:17 I would perhaps take it one step further ... we are fate ... hmmm ... interesting ... gulp! StarSparkle 10-10-2004, 12:37 [Originally posted by bonny Yes , I do believe in fate and destiny.] Like Bonny, I believe in fate and destiny, in that I believe that certain things in our lives are "meant to be". I feel the major events in people's lives are pre-determined but that we do have choices to make on a day-to-day basis. StarSparkle PS Sorry, Bonny, I've made a bit of a mess of quoting you there - apologies! JoeP 10-10-2004, 12:37 I believe in Fate in a 'big picture' sort of way. I don't believe in minute to minute pre-destination, but I do believe that there are times, places and people in your life that are pivotal and that set your life off in particular directions. If you're having a 'bad time' in your life, I believe that it can be sometimes caused by you not following the direction at that time in your life that you should be. Anyone see Sliding Doors last night? Joe Snook 10-10-2004, 13:28 believing in fate is a good way to stop worrying about all the mistakes you have made. saxon51 10-10-2004, 13:32 Originally posted by StarSparkle [Originally posted by bonny Yes , I do believe in fate and destiny.] I feel the major events in people's lives are pre-determined but that we do have choices to make on a day-to-day basis. StarSparkle Taking it that a major event in our lives is predetermined, such as the birth of our first child, or even our time of death (can't think of a more MAJOR event than these), but day-to-day choices aren't down to fate, then couldn't we freely choose to take precautions such as birth control to stop the major events happening, or if my destiny was to die of old age, couldn't I choose to get drunk and die whilst driving my car at aged 52? THE WORD destiny above should read choice StarSparkle 10-10-2004, 13:43 Originally posted by markham ....... or if my destiny was to die of old age, couldn't I choose to get drunk and die whilst driving my car at aged 52? ??? In that case, your destiny would have been to die whilst driving your car at age 52, wouldn't it? saxon51 10-10-2004, 13:53 OK, destiny was a bad choice of words, I meant 'choice'. In that I would have chosen to die this way, and therefore cheated fate. And if you can cheat fate, then fate doesn't exist. venger 10-10-2004, 14:30 Originally posted by markham OK, destiny was a bad choice of words, I meant 'choice'. Jamie 10-10-2004, 14:48 What happens when ... what fate has in store for you is something you find wholey unpalettable ... do you just 'accept your fate' !? venger 10-10-2004, 14:54 I have just consulted my therapist/ I mean Doom Lord/ I mean Clair Jones and she said that it all true some person did write this for me. :o How About That :o saxon51 10-10-2004, 15:00 Just wondering. If our lives are determined by fate, and everything is predetermined and can't be altered by free will, why the hell do I waste valuable time and energy looking both ways before I cross the road? venger 10-10-2004, 15:04 Originally posted by markham Just wondering. I wouldn't be the person I am now if my mother hadn't died when I was twelve. I had to become a mother and housekeeper due to my father's incapable state for many years. I became a strong person and also a very understanding person. Whether I was predestined to be like this anyway is debatable. Things, be they good or bad happen to us for a reason. What we get from it is up to us. What will be will be.... Jamie 10-10-2004, 16:00 Originally posted by mitziwillow Fate we cannot control. In that I mean people who we love that die. Only thing left is to become stronger and tuffer ... and value what you have. What will be will be :-) Titian 10-10-2004, 17:19 Have you ever had something really bad happen to you in your life? If so, can you find something positive that came out of it? That is fate/destiny. If you can't then the reasons behind it may not have revealed themselves yet. I can think of quite a few examples in my life of this. JoeP 10-10-2004, 17:46 I have to say that I agree with bonny's last comment here, with regard to fate / destiny being a teacher. Sometimes I've worked very hard at something and found every thing I do confounded by events. Then a change in direction and it's smooth as silk. Well, sometimes - but I do find that some things are easier than others, and also and I've found that the 'easier' things have been those that have seemed to work best for me. Going with the flow of life, rather than constantly banging your head against a brick wall. I guess to quote Al Stewart - 'nothing that's forced can ever be right, if it doesn't come naturally, leave it'. Or, that other philosopher of song, Mary Chapin Carpenter 'the wrong things aren't supposed to last'. Joe Jamie 10-10-2004, 18:04 Originally posted by JoePritchard I guess to quote Al Stewart - 'nothing that's forced can ever be right, if it doesn't come naturally, leave it'. Yes Yes Yes ... J totally agree with you there Joe. Where did the quote come from ? JoeP 10-10-2004, 18:12 Originally posted by Jamie Yes Yes Yes ... J totally agree with you there Joe. Where did the quote come from ? The Al Stewart quote came from a sonmg called, funnily enough 'If it doesn't come naturally, leave it'. On the 'Year of the Cat' album. The Mary Chapin Carpenter one comes from a song called "This is love" from her 'Stones in the Road' album. Both on my current playlist at the day job - God bless multimedia PCs!! Joe |
