View Full Version : Some company for long dog walks
teknodiva101 12-02-2007, 21:23 Hi, I have just got a puppy and am wondering if there are any people out there that would like to share some long walks. No funny business & it's not a try at pulling, just want some intellectual chats in some nice scenery with the new pup. None of my mates own dogs, so it would be nice to meet some dog loving people out there.
Hi Teknodiva!
What sort of pup have you got? Remember that until it's old enough, you won't be able to go for any long walks. The pup needs time to grow, it's joints to develop and bones to strengthen. It'll need plenty of time as overwalking at a young age can cause lameness as they get a bit older. (and I mean, 2 years, not 14 when it's expected!)
I'd be quite happy to meet up for a walk though, Eddy won't be up for it (he's 12 and not too tolerant of pups) but Takara my young dally will be!
Mind you, how much chatting you'll be doing when you're watching what the pup's doing is another matter!!
We need piccies! Do you know how to put links to photos on here? If not ask and I, or someone else will help
teknodiva101 12-02-2007, 22:10 Hi lotti, she's a heinz 57, placid as anything and really playful, i just thought it would be a whole lot easier to meet up with other dog lovers and do some great walks in sheffield. It would be great to meet up, although poppy is only 7.5 weeks old. Let me know if you think she'd be up for it, I know lookin at her now she'd be up for anything.
TattyBear 12-02-2007, 22:17 Hi,
She shouldnt be allowed out yet as she wont have had her injections.
She is too young for long walks, she is like a baby a 10min burst of energy and she will be shattered.
You need to build her up slowly, on your garden first and then 5 minute walks and build up.
When she is big enough there will be plenty of people who would walk with you, including me and my 2 labradors.
xx
KATIEB_23 13-02-2007, 10:49 Hi teknodiva  & welcome!
I'm sure you will get to meet up with plenty of forummers for walkies once your pup is old enough ;)
Lottie - wasn't there a rule of thumb for length of walks for puppies... something like 5mins per mth old?? I cant remember.
I know it might seem like your pup is up for anything, but it would be bad for her bones & joints to over exercise her right now :)
Piccies pleeeeeassseee!!!!!
Hi Technodiva
On the whole you'll find we're sensible pet owners here on Pets, so if you ask for company on a dog walk, you're likely to get a volunteer who is more interested in their own dog than pulling you ;)
Once your dog has had her injections, it would be good to meet up with other dogs for 'socialisation', basically to give her the opportunity to find that other dogs don't need to be barked at or bitten, and aren't going to do the same to her, so as she gets older she will be easier to walk :)
Which part of Sheffield are you in BTW?
Brude :love:s puppies :D
jediwarrior 13-02-2007, 18:47 where in sheffield are u as i think tia will like a friend to walk with when ur dog has had its injections and grown a bit
Hi teknodiva, Takara can't meet your pup yet as she's not vaccinated yearly so it would be dangerous to put them together until your pup is fully vaccinated.
has she hard her first injection yet?
If not, get her booked in for about 8 weeks old for her first injection, then 10 weeks for her second injection (and microchip) and then 10 days after her second injection she should be ok to go out.
Katie, yes the rule of thumb is 5 mins per month of age, but some people don't even take them out that long. It really does depend on the pup, Takara had longer than that because she was too young to concentrate on training/playing in the house and the only way to tire her out was to walk her. Others won't need that long.
teknodiva - book her into a training class as well, it doesn't have to be a puppy class necessarily, as I find that introducing them to adult dogs is a good idea, prevents pups winding each other up and training going out of the window ;)
All walks and training classes will provide much needed socialisation and if you know anyone with a vaccinated dog, do ask them to come and meet your pup, get her meeting dogs asap. You shouldn't allow her onto any common ground though, just the garden and house and don't let any unvaccinated dogs in.
If you can get her thinking in the house it'll tire her out much quicker than running around until she's tired!
teknodiva101 14-02-2007, 19:55 cheers for all the advice guys, i'm gonna book her in for jabs next week and investigate dog training classes, i live in burngreave, anyone know of a good place, i have a car & able to travel.
TattyBear 14-02-2007, 20:44 I like hilsborough park and bole hills (as I think Lotti does-bole hills that is) regarding training in your area im not sure. Good luck and hopefully we can meet for a doggy walk xxx
