View Full Version : System restore & increased used space in C drive!
Hi
Recently i've had to install & uninstall Bluetooth software & some of the software couldn't be 100% removed so i did some system restores.
My pc has small Hard drive on 7.01GB as i only use it for internet & email.
Before it was half full, now it's 5.85GB used & 1.15GB free!
Could this be because of all the restore points over last 2 weeks.
In System restore, on the right, it says i can only remove last one!
How can i remove more?
This increase in used space has happened since restoring a fiew times, i haven't added any progs etc
Any help appreciated
Rom
if your happy, and your sure your happy with how your pc is set up, right click my computer, and go to properties, in there there's a system restore option..
Disable it, (or decrese the space used) and then restart your PC..
if you disabled it, go back in, enable it, and set a % for the space to use, and restart again..
also, go into C:\Documents And Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp\ - and remove the files in there... (some of them may be un-removable as they may be in use... dont worry about this)
sugarcube 12-02-2007, 20:30 use treesize freeversion (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml) to check what exactly is taking up all the space first before removing system restore if your not sure.

Is this the same as the 'cookies' folder contents?
'Temp' is not listed on my PC following your route, and I would be interested in getting rid of some crap.
FORE - You need to show all files (Go to my computer > Tools Menu > Folder Options and in there select VIEW at the top, then select "Show hidden files and folders"
and no, the cookies folder is different, thats usually C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files (for IE) - FireFox Stores them in a cookie database..
But cookies can be cleared via the browsers options...
dardandec 12-02-2007, 22:01 To delete restore points-
Go to my computer,
Right click "c" drive or whatever it is on your computer,
Properties,
Disk clean up,
More options,
Then click the "You can free more disk space by removing all but the most recent restore point" at the bottom.
After you have done this click cancel then cancel to close the boxes. If you dont you will start binning some windows components, I fell for that once LOL.
FORE - You need to show all files (Go to my computer > Tools Menu > Folder Options and in there select VIEW at the top, then select "Show hidden files and folders"
Got 'em now - millions!
But is it safe to remove them ALL?
Everything in the Temp folder, yes
basically, when you download something and run it, It 'extracts' the install files and dumps them in there whilst it uses them, Windows doesnt always remove everything......
some files could be in use, its where firefox puts temporary information, and other programs use it, so if you get a message saying it cannot be removed, then dont worry about it, somethings using it.....

I just turned off SR & it deleted all my previous restore points & freed up a hell of a lot of space.
In documents & settings i get user & all users!
I can't find my name!

Control panel,
Internet options,
General,
Delete-
Temporary internet files,
Cookies,
History,
Form data,
Passwords.
Does the same job without faffing about
This is on ie 7, very much the same on ie 6
This also bins 99% of the stuff that spyware programs pick up too :)

I just turned off SR
Excellent idea remind me never to do it, I like my reserve parachute when I’m free falling.
