Last Autumn we went down to Devon and I picked up a Medlar off the floor at Buckfast Abbey, I've taken it apart and yesterday I've planted 5 seeds. I'm growing them to see if they germinate or not.. just for a bit of fun :)

Anyone any experience of growing these?

No, it sounds like an exciting find. They sound like something out of medieval England. Are they similar to a quince? I wonder if they need a pollinator?

Medlar trees were featured on Gardeners Question Time this past weekend - they recommended that you pick the fruit just before ripe, then ripen fully before eating for a better taste. Very tempted to get one ourselves...

Try speaking to Richard (the guy who does the Organic Gardening course) as I know he has grown medlars.
If you want his contact number let me know.

Okies - I have GTQ to listen to this week yet so I shall listen with interest :)

I'll see if these grow if they do I'll try and tell you what I did!
