I was thinking of moving into Walkley. I am living in Crookesmoor at the moment and was wondering what the town is like. Are there many students, elderly. Whats the crime like there. Are the shops any good. Are there many take aways and pubs. Is it mainly resedential?

Crime = worse as close to upperthorpe (unless you go to northen end)
Locals = Quite a few h8ing wingy basterds that can't stop complaining. I heard some complain about the fact they had nothing to complain about
Bars = very cleeky think wild west. all jukeboxes are set to stop and go quiet when someone walks in.

You could do worse, but I'd either stay in crookes or goto hillsborough.

Crime -less than around Crookesmoor road- the higher up the better.

Mix-decent-mostly locals in pubs. Freedom and Flourist are good pubs. Springy just round the corner.

Nicer than Hillsborough-Not as nice as Crookes but less noisy

Lots of good take aways (see Walkley take away thread)

Have a walk on South road and see what you think. Netto is good and cheap. Morrisons down the hill/COOP up the hill....I prefer it to Crookesmoor.

Must alert you to save you time, money and aggravation that we suffered. Tried to buy small house in WALKLEY STREET in row of about 4 for our student son. The vendor led us to believe that our offer was viable, with negotiation, so we had an initial survey (£430) which showed up damp + dry rot + lots of other defects. We needed to get another more extensive quote for the work but at this point the vendor stopped answering calls from their estate agent.Got them after a week had lapsed but they said no our man could not have access as the boyfriend ,who was there during the day did not want the hassle of seeing people round! The saga strung out for 2+1/2 months. eventually they let him in but then did not return calls again for another week. At the last moment, the boyfriend said he had a friend interested in buying it at the asking price.(107,000).We had offered 105 having been told it was worth 103 by three professionals. I see the house is back on the market and they may be renting. Do be careful as these people were thoroughly underhand. It ended up costing us £430-surveyor, £239-solicitors fee + 2nd surveyors fee(£89).
REMEMBER BE EXTRA CAREFUL IN WALKLEY STREET!
Good luck with your search as other than this , the area seemed ok.

never had a problem with crime, don't go to the local pubs very often, not many students, not noticed that many old people, morrisons is convenient, take aways good, it is mainly residential and if you're on walkley lane it can be a little noisey on a friday/saturday night.

I lived in Walkley for about 3 years and have only recently moved. In my opinion it is a great place to live, as long as you don't live on the main road (Walkley Lane) because of the noise of the traffic. The top end (closer to crookes) is better than lower Walkley, which is similar to Hillsbrough.

South Road is a bit of a dive and could do with a revamp. There are some good local pubs - The Florist and Freedom aren't much to look at but are very friendly, cheapish and have liberal opening hours!. The Walkley Cottage is better quality and serves some nice beers and food.

Never had a problem with crime, but a neighbour was broken into once.

I've lived in Walkley for 6 years.

Nice mix of different housing, with lots of families. Not much crime as far as I can tell, though we had an attempted burglary a few years ago.

South Road seems a bit run down, but new businesses are opening up.

Its convenient for public transport, with regular fairly frequent buses, plus the tram further down the hill.

Close enough to the city centre and local hospitals and other amenities to be convenient. Streets are very steep - it's built on the side of a valley.

Not a good place to park your car, due to lack of parking space - if you get a house here try to get one with off-street parking.

Overall I like it here. I'd like South Road to be a bit smarter though.
