Our Sheffield 6 "expert" Mr Taxman, is helping me to organise a walk next Sunday from Rivelin Valley to which existing and new walkers are invited. The course and length of the walk is yet to be decided, but if there are any new people who are interested, and have perhaps been put off up to now by the length of some of the walks, then we are prepared to have a short 3/4 mile walk just for newcomers, if anybody wants us to.
The walk will commence from the Rivelin Dam cafe at 10.30, but regulars have decided to meet up from 9.30, and have a hearty breakfast at the cafe before setting off!
Comments from anyone interested in going next wee.k will be welcome

It doesn't open till 10 am?

If you ever go on a walk that doesn't involve getting up and out at the crack of dawn on a Sunday morning, and is no further than a couple of miles in a flat area, I might manage to get there :hihi:

I need more fresh air ....

Erm,scubz - the cafe doesn't open until 10 o'clock. So,shall we meet up a little later than half nine?

10 will be fine Itis, I mean, it`s not as if we have to set off bang on 10.30 if we`re still eating is it? In fact, if the weathers naff we can even spend all morning there, feed the ducks, and then go back to the caff for lunch!
Let`s keep fingers crossed for as good a weather as what we had last Sunday, a few less `Eigers`than that walk and the same great crowd who enjoyed it too (plus any newcomers of course)

Any more details yet on the length and style of walk? Also do you know what buses to catch from town to get to the cafe?

No idea on buses, but the tram stop from the Loxley Walk we did is within walking distance I think. no doubt somebody will post the buses some time though!
Regarding the length of the walk, the feeling was that we`d ask interested people how far they`d like to go, cos there are lots of options. Up the valley and back for instance is only 3 miles return, and maybe a newcomer might fancy that, then we could do what we did once before and do another walk in the afternoon of a similar length, for anybody wanting to go further. Or another suggestion is to do Rivelin and Wyoming Brook, which is 6 miles total. What do you think Nooka? We missed your company Sunday btw!

Tramstop for those who like that kinda thing is the Malin Bridge terminus. Costs about £1.50 from town/£1.20 from University stop. From the tram stop, you walk along Holme Lane (away from the tramlines), cross over and go down Rivelin Valley Road. The cafe is past the fire station - maybe half a mile? Sorry, I've no concept of distance!

Buses to Rivelin I'm not so sure about. I think if you get a Stannington bus, they all go through Malin Bridge, and certainly past the tram stop, so it's a little additional walk to the caff.

Enjoy it!

I gather the Rivelin Cafe is just up the road from Malin Bridge.
I've never been on the Super Tram, so I'll be having my first ride.
I'll be getting off the 98 bus near ( J.B.Hughes or near to where the 'Hole in't road use to be at the bottom of High Street).
Where is the tram stop to use to catch the Super Tram to Malin Bridge?
Thank you.

Well I think i can manage the 6 miles with a bacon sarnie or two inside me, and maybe a stop for lunch somewhere! As for the route I havent been to that neck of the woods for many years so ive no idea what its like now. Ill just go along with what others want or as you say Scubz what any newcomers would like.

I am having a trip to CCC on Saturday so i might be wearing new boots! So this could mean you all laughing at me when i complain about sore feet! Sorry i didnt join you last week btw but I managed to get myself so completely entwined in my quilt that I couldnt move all day! (Nothing to do with the snow honest!)

Itisnow - I have sent you a PM

Hi Albert!

The tram stop for Malin Bridge is incredibly close by; it stops at the Castle Square stop, directly over what used to be the Hole in the Road (outside the Bankers Draft).

You need to get on a tram going up the hill that says Malin Bridge on the front. At that time there will be trams going in the same direction marked Middlewood that won't get you near enough.

Hope this helps. :)

If I wasn't already busy this Sunday (and have already done Rivelin today with a pooch) I'd be up for this- it's my fave place to walk.

Can I suggest that anyone who isn't already taking one borrows a dog to take with them on this one? It's a very sociable dog walking path most of the way. The cafe even has a dog park just for them.

No- the dog park area is outside. There are loads of tables outside for you to sit with the dogs if it's not howling down too much.

I usually call in when there's a cream puppy already covered in mud, so even if they allowed dogs in I wouldn't want him in muddying everything up.

EDIT- I have been asked to point out that my idea for everyone to borrow a dog for the walk was actually a joke, and I'm not responsible for any ensuing mayhem or mirth. Thank you.

I'll be on the 08.40 no98 bus from Totley Brook arriving in town at 09.06. Super Tram to Malin Bridge and walking up Rivelin Valley Road to the Cafe for 10.00?. I hope to bring one of my ferocious dogs with me so probably I'll need a fifty yard exclusion zone around me!!.

Can you take dogs on the tram???

We may come on this. It has been discussed (but that has happened before). There is a cafe at the other end now as well, can't remember what it is called. We may leave you at the other end and walk back to Crookes via Crosspool though.

Don't think I've ever seen one Fuzzy. In fact, I seem to remember me-and-pippo having to walk into town for the NYE walk as Pippo wasn't allowed on the tram. Check the supertram website though... you might be able to sneak on Sunday mornings - it's very quiet!

I've just checked the tramtimes, and from Castle Square (Banker's Draft/TJ Hughes stop), the Malin Bridge trams are at 9.15, getting to Malin Bridge at 9.30, or 09.36 arriving at MB at 09.51.

Couldn't see owt about dogs though. :(

Meaks
15-02-2007, 15:55
Dogs can't go on the trams - I remember me-and-pippo having to walk much further than expected on New Year's Eve.

I'm afraid my attendance very much depends on my status after the Rotherham beer festival on Saturday...

To travel on the Super-tram I would need to provide a Pet Carrier for my dogs. So as I can't find a pet carrier made out of Half inch round, harden, carbon steel with a four inch dead-lock-padlock. I've decided to leave my dogs at home. So you don't have anything to worry about.

I'm equally reliably informed that the Rivelin Valley is about two and a half miles each way. The long walk group, once they get to the end of the valley, will carry on to wyming brook for a circular walk before heading back along the valley.

Yes, we wondered where you were Eclaire. We didn't actually leave the cafe until about 10 to 11 as people were still waiting for food orders etc. I walked for about an hour and then 'threw in the towel' and tramped back with lurcher, Sol, as I had to be back home by 1pm. Tess667, Mr Tess and doggie Tess had come along on impulse, just to do a short walk and I caught up with them on the way back. It was good to meet people, and the weather was really good for walking. Waiting now for the update from those intrepid walkers who went the whole course.

I did sort of get up in in time but then I had a couple of things to do and time ran away with me in the end.

But I had promised Jazz we'd go out so I took him to Ecclesall Woods after lunch and it was like Labrador World there, he met loads of other dawgs, paddled, saw his first horse and generally had a wonderful time ... except I nearly brought back the wrong dog ... black labs do tend to look pretty much the same, don't they :help: Although he, of course, was the most handsome :)

Unfortunately, I fell down in the mud and hurt my knee so we had to come back after an hour or so ... but it was such a lovely afternoon.

Had a great time today, started off by a super size bacon and tomato sarnie, then a lovely walk through the valley and on up through the beautiful Wyming Brook then on up to the Sportsman for a cracking plate of fish n chips! All in all a fab day and nice to meet some new walkers and their dogs. Thanks to Taxman for guiding us on this walk and to the others for some great company. :)

Aw, I'm so sorry I missed this one :( - Grissom's done some excellent photos though - as usual!

Looks like it was a corker... I'm definitely raring to muddy my boots at Bradford Dale next week. Fingers crossed for equally good weather.

Was a very pleasant morning, despite the struggle getting up after Rotherham beer festival. :)

Threw in the towel before Wyming Brook, but will definitely explore it soon as it sounds like we missed a treat. Still, managed to get in the Sportsman in Crosspool by 1... :)

Nice to see everyone.

Some Photos hopefully?? http://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzypurple/sets/72157594543059578/ It doesn't appear to be working in slideshow mode for some reason, i'l try and sort it.

Good walk, enjoyed it, nice to meet people. Interesting start with a scramble through the mud in the cemetry before we got to the cafe. We also went to the Sportsman but in Crosspool with Kristian and Meaks, as they caught us up on Manchester Rd (we had stopped for a fag and to have a look around).

And Mr Fuzzy is Nomme. And for anyone interested in cemeterys there is a tour in the Walkley one opposite Rivelin at 3.30 on Sunday the 18th March and 29th April.

The Video film of the Rivelin - Lodge Moor Walk has been downloaded & played.
The Video filming is up to Pro - Upper - Standard!!!
Unfortunately (Because I've never done it) I forgotten what I was told regarding, how to transfer the Video film off the tape onto a D.V.D.
So if anyone would like to do this just let me know.

Next Day - Dont all rush!!
