Hi was wondering if anyone knows of any dressmaking classes or of a dressmaker who would be willing to give a few lessons? I am not a complete novice but not far off! Thanks

Have had some success - a lady called Joan Howson runs a class in Chapeltown. It's on Thursday evenings 7 - 9 at the Methodist Church on Nether Avenue, at the bottom of Burncross Road. It's an informal class - everyone is working on their own project and Joan helps out with everything. Cost is one night you pay £18 (cost of room hire) and other nights you pay £5 (ie everyone takes it in turn to pay cost of room hire). Haven't been along yet, but will be giving it a try. Her phone number is 0114 2847110

I'm really interested to know how it goes. I'm an uber beginner so I'm not sure if this would be the right class for me. I feel as if I might end up taking up all the teacher's time. Let me know how it is if you go.

Looks like I missed my calling! I used to run a small dressmaking/repair business and taught some of my neighbours to sew! If anyone is desperate and cannot find a place to go, I am quite happy to do a bit of teaching!

As I was in the Fabric Shop in Hillsborough at the weekend, I noticed they have some adverts up for classes, near the doorway.

That fabric shop is like Aladdin's cave! I've started dressmaking recently and as I did GCSE textiles ooh, about 10 years ago, I guess I could be considered a novice too!
There are some good books out there but nothing beats having someone to show you how it all works so if it all comes unstuck I may need some help!

Hi, im also a qualified dressmaker and after reading your thread interested in how many people out there would be interested in attending a course?

I could do absolute beginners from pattern selection to cutting out and making up the finished garment, regardless of dificulty. Anyone interested?

What kind of price is anyone expecting to pay for a couple of hours tuition per week - A) in a class situation, or B) in your own home for a personal lesson?

please post back replies.

I am absolutely interested in lessons. I prefer in home day classes if possible since I have a toddler but would be open to others coming along and holding the classes at mine (S11). I could also do night classes. I have no idea about money. I like the idea of trading services (knitting lessons, DIY, babysitting) but could pay if that works best.

I am a very beginner having never sewn a button. I've worked as a knitwear designer for years and know essentially how to make a garment from wool but other than that I'm clueless. In truth I'm a little scared of my sewing machine.

Thanks

I would still be interested in a group class - wherever and whenever. Have started dress and cut out the material but that is as far as I have got so far!

Group lesson I enquired about was £5 per person per session.

hi i'm really interested too. My new machine arrived this morning and i haven't
much of a clue:confused:
Would prefer home class as i don't have transport depending where you are plus need help on my type of machine.
So could you pm me with details thanks.

I am definitely still interested in dressmaking classes. Evenings and weekends are best for me.
Would £15 for a 2hr private session be considered reasonable? Obviously for a group session I would expect to pay less.

Where would your group sessions be held? I'll need a case for my machine if I'm going to start carrying it around!

I look forward to your feedback!

I'm an art student in sheffield but have always wanted to do dress making. Also, I have just been robbed of my dream dress on e-bay by some crafty other bidder (*shakes fist*) so I think it's about time I learned to make it myself! Has anything been decided on classes? I think spanna2005's pricing seems fair, but I'd prefer to learn as a group as I think it'd be nice to meet new people and also I will be diabolical so I need other people to be rubbish with me! Evenings are best for me. Please post back if anything develops of this because i am very, very interested.X P.S I live at Hunters Bar so seems we are all pretty near each other.

I have a sewing machine, I made my hubby buy me for christmas 2 years ago, and I've yet to use it - it scares me!! I live in Totley, and would be happy to travel a little way or for people to come here, I have a dining room that could probably fit 4 - 6 sewing machines on it. As a complete novice I would like to learn with other people of the same standard as me. Daytime or evening is best for me. Cheers - Vanessa xx

I'm in Greystones and still desperate to learn. I got my sewing machine for Mother's Day two years ago and haven't used it yet as I am also scared. We should set something up soon! We do all seem to be nearish to each other we just need a teacher.

Jane that sounds great, with 4 kids it would be great to be able to sew. Especially with a little girl, all those fancy dress outfits I could make!

I really want to be able to make clothers for my kids but secretly I want to get good enough to make clothes (really decent clothes) for myself!

I keep checking on this thread for details of classes! I bought a pattern and some fabric to make an evening dress for a ball I'm going to in July and could really do with some lessons and/or support to make it properly. Too scared to even start cutting into the pattern at this point!

I would be interested in classes and have been looking around for some. I would be happy to do a group session, as I would like to have a chat with other people and nosy at what they are making :hihi:

Thought I'd share my first dressmaking attempt:

http://photos-990.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v81/168/52/523616468/n523616468_161990_6054.jpg

Unfortunately I don't think I got the measurements right on the dressform (bargain of £30 from ebay :) ) so the dress fits well on the dummy but not really on me :(

Would welcome some feedback from the dressmaking teachers please!

Which bit are you stuck on Helen? I was using an old pattern for my attempt so the darts were in the wrong place for my shape and I tried to make it up!

Hey Ladies,
I am a friend of Jane's, she told me you needed a teacher. I make my own clothes and have did a Dress Making and Sewing course to intermediate level a couple of years ago to get the basics. I could offer you introductory classes covering seams, zips, pattern reading, etc. We could possibly run it so that everyone has an on going garment to work on and then we learn one skill on top of that a week?
I think i would need to chat to people a bit before we set anything up to see what everyones needs/skill level is. I would be happy doing day/evening/individual/group class. Please get in touch and let me know your thoughts.
I will be away for a month from the 10th of july but am fairly free until then so could do a few lessons before to get people going?
Cheers Ruthie

I'd be really interested in something like this too! I have no clue about sewing machines but I'm 'borrowing' my mother's one for the summer, and I figure the best way to get to grips with it is just to play around with it and learn as I go, but some actual lessons would be great! I'd prefer a group class to a one on one though! Will keep an eye on this thread to see if anything gets sorted :D

Hi,

I'd be interested in having lessons, your suggestion about having an ongoing garment and just having someone there for when we get stuck sounds like a good idea. I can use a sewing machine, cut out a pattern and tac but that's about it, anything more complicated and I need help. Evenings or weekend are best for me. Hope we can get something sorted :)

Hey guys,

Ruthie has helped me start to sew (I threaded the machine!) and she was fab. I think we should consider group lessons. I live between Hunters Bar and Banner Cross and would love to have people come here and bring their machines. I could set up my living room as a sewing room for when people come and Ruthie could help us all. I suggested 5 an hour for group lessons (15 for private). I know *vanessa* redtammy279, shadybrady, and a few others said they would be intersted so PM me or email me janemurraystringer@gmail.com and I can call Ruthie.

Cheers!

i would be very interested in sewing classes, ive been making very simple patterns and fixing clothes for years but am kind of stuck wher i am unless i get some tuition. i got my overlocker a few days ago and want to make full use of it.

if there is going to be classes or a course id love to come. id prefer a few people in a class as i seem to work better in this enviroment. but private wll obviously be good too.

i hope this gets off the ground high street clothes are just too boring for me nowadays.

I would really like to get some dressmaking and textile tuition. I have basic dressmaking skills, but never quite manage to get that professional finish to the clothes I make. I love painting silk, but would like to learn batik, machine embroidery, felting etc.... :help: Is there anyone out there who is already running a class I could join or who would be willing to give one to one tuition? I checked out the Hillsborough College course details, but they just seemed to be for complete beginners. I live in Hunters Bar and can do evenings, weekends or every other Friday in the day.

Just looked at the Choices prospectus and find it very dissapointing in the textiles classes area, for such a large city, one class, one night a week for two hours?

All the Part time courses are 7 - 9 pm, which I can't attend anyhow.

Wish they did part time classes during the day!

Seems like there is some real interest in having classes, surely there must be someone wanting to start up a new venture?

I know one lady who runs a few course in Sheffield a few times a year, £90 a day!

hi again,

i am now living back in sheffield and setting up a small studio on bank street, just behind the boardwalk, near castle market. I won't be properly up and running until at least late november/early december but i would like to start offering basic sewing classes from the studio.

Once i am up and running i could do classes from one on one up to about 3 people at a time priced accordingly.

I don't know if people are able to get to the studio? I will be in there most days from 8 til 8ish which gives quite alot of scope for time slots. Please let me know if you are interested, what you would want to learn, when would be good, how much you could pay and what you think of the whole idea!

i'm working in london for the next 2 and 1/2 weeks but will have email access.
Cheers, Ruthie

Oh if you find anything will you pm me? I'm also in the S8 area. I have a very old sewing machine that I have used to do basics on tablecloths/ throws/ new hems, I would love to learn more though. I did make a dress years ago but if I remember it fell apart after a couple of washes

Then again if you have to take the sewing machine along with you I think I'd have to get a new one as it very very heavy :)

Direct Sewing & Knitting on Attercliffe (near the stadium) do some classes. I picked a leaflet up yesterday, the day courses for dressmaking are about £75 I think, and they cover all sorts, from tailoring to bra-making

They also do various other sewing classes, which are cheaper.
