In todays Amateur Gardening Bob Flowerdew (he of the bum length plait) advises putting out your hair trimmings to help birds build their nests.

Its not the advice I find funny, as I often clean out my hairbrush and chuck the findings out of the bedroom window thinking the birds will use it ... its just that his plait could keep the starlings outside the cathedral warm all winter! I wonder if the editor had a chuckle when he published it.

BTW fur wool and hair act as cushions and insulation in nests but also as strengtheners when embedded in mud. Hair can also be would around the twigs and straw to held them in place. Now there are less wild animals natural sources are scarce apparently.

He may keep more of it attached to his head than most, but just think about the strengthening properties of hair that long!

I used to leave the cat groomings out in the garden, but we don't have enough wild birds and animals to take advantage of them- they're all too clever to live in our street with the dozens of cats about.

Are you sure they're absent by their intelligence or absent because they are already cat pooh?

Believe me- Baby's a little killing machine when it comes to little things that run away from her. If they were about I'd see more evidence being brought in as presents.

He might have all the women gardeners swooning over him like they do Allan Titchmarsh . He will be writing Romantic novels next like Titchy.;)

Did anyone see the springwatch program on this subject... seems the birds liked Kate humbles hair to Bill Oddies (can't blame 'em :)).
