At that time all the locals used to think it was just for dossers and none of them would go in despite the meat and potatoe pies being on display in the window and looking very appetising. I eventually went in about twenty years later and it was still full of dossers. kirky 21-10-2004, 13:15 Originally posted by extaxman I I eventually went in about twenty years later and it was still full of dossers. :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: classic:hihi: Ned Ludd 21-10-2004, 13:36 My boss was a typical middle class professional of the type who was never comfortable in a pub. He was in Butlers once a week for 20odd years and he never complained about the clientele which included tradesmen and lorrydrivers. The pie was superb. Butlers served up quality food in unpretentious surroundings, mainly for the working class. extaxman must have grown up to be a yuppie!:P rincewind 21-10-2004, 13:57 I used to use Butlers too, and I once heard that when the pie was alost gone, they just came and put a new crust on it! It was bloody good anyway. beckb 21-10-2004, 14:00 My uncle used to work in Butlers for years! Best meat & potato pie ever! sparky2 21-10-2004, 14:21 Wonderful meat & potato pie with relish and dont forget the squares of yorkshire pudding. At the time I went in old Mrs Butler would be serving with one of those sun shades on her head to keep the sun out because all the shop front was glass. Those were the days I would give almost anything for some pie right now. Ned Ludd 29-10-2004, 08:39 Stephen Butler died this week. For anyone who never got chance to dine out in this famous eatery there is an excellent article in today's Sheffield Telegraph which gives the flavour |
