My Mum's asked me to post this.... she can remember an air raid shelter being in Hillsborough Park in the war, a number of steps that went down into a long thin tunnel near to the top end of the running track. She's asking if anyone knows whether it's still there/been filled in/been closed off etc....?

Any parks department people able to shed any light on this?

I think you'll find it was dug out and then filled in.

There is definatly one under the football pitch at Norfolk school. It sounds identical to the one you are on about. I once went down with some friends, a series of tunnels with v small rooms branching of them. Very scary and dark!

Checked with my Mum. She well remembers the Hillsborough park shelter as she was in there on the night of the Sheffield blitz. Says that the whole place shook when the land mine blew up on Hawksley Avenue.

My mum now lives on Hawksley Avenue, but at the time she lived on the Sutton Estate, she remembers the blitz - it made her deaf for 3 days! It must have been scary for your mom sheltering so close to it! Mum says it was a landmine, as big as a postbox and came down on a parachute...

Thanks for that, anyway!

I remember being with Pop T in the shelters in Hillsborough Park
Just after the war.
They could have been included in the Public toilets thread ,
