View Full Version : TJ Hugues, is it 99.5% rubbish?
What a useless place... All this big shop space taken to sell crap...
Of course I suppose you get the odd bargain or two but what a waste of a good retail place...
Just a thought, all of this criticism of lack of space in the city centre but this big mess taking lots of space called "TJ Hugues" could move to the premises where BHS used to be in the market, and house of Fraser could move back where TJ's currently is!! Simple but brilliant idea!!
Their cafes are good, the downstairs one is good for drinks, and the upstairs one is good for sandwiches.
some things in tjs are ok but some things are deffinately crap job lot things with masses of only one size,
as i stated on marks cafe thread, tjs upstairs cafe have had loads of complaints about their dirty cutlery.
downstairs one is ok though.
ive had a few electrical things been ok though.
and theyve had some lovely italian leather wallets in. of late.
oh and theyve just been selling some sports clothes for a fraction of the price.- got my teenage lads some to wear for college.
all in all though i sort of like the shop.

Think house of fraser are quite happy in Meadowhell, thanks. Perhaps TJs will sell the building when new business arrives and it's worth more to them than trying to sell 'stuff'.
There's been on in Liverpool for as long as I can remember, so that's over 30years. It has it's market. You're obviously not it. I'm not sure I am either

Dont get me wrong I wouldn't want to TJ's to close down. I've bought a thing or two in there.. ( Although the electrical stuff I bought from there has been absolute rubbish!!) I just think it's place is in the market, or currently on the moor..
coopster1974 09-10-2004, 07:04 Went yesterday - bought 3 pairs of jeans for £24. Not rubbishy ones either, nice bootcut with that rusted look.
Why pay more?
I dont like House of Fraser, M&S etc for the simple fact they ask ridiculous prices for mediocre goods. All they do is appeal to the sad twits who get off on saying "I bought it from House of Fraser - look at my wad!" Its very similar to being a label freak. They think it will earn them friends and respect.
Donating the difference between goods bought at TJ's and HofF to charity will earn them respect - not buying full price Levis when they can be bought at TJ's for £20!
I agree, some of the stuff TJ's sells is crap, but then if you're in the market for some new clothes then you really cant go wrong. And it's a little unfair to write a shop off because some of the stuff doesn't personally appeal.
Even if I won the lottery I think I would still buy my jeans n tshirts there simply because I'm not a pretentious prat!!
You get what you pay for.
The reason why TJ Hughes sell Levis for £20 is because they're rejects or unpopular.
Simple as that. I've always believed in never to buy the cheapest, just in the middle.
Tj's is by far the cheapest.. All their jeans are awful:gag:
coopster1974 09-10-2004, 07:59 When you say all their jeans are awful - what exactly do you mean by that? Is that from personal experience or are you just talking out of your arse to make a point?
I'm sat at work at the moment wearing a pair I bought yesterday, very comfy, stitching is good, a great fit and best of all they dont look like they only cost £8.
Please explain to me your justification in calling the jeans I'm wearing "awful"
i buy a lot of stuff from tj hughes now a lot of the stuff in there is end of the line stuff but its still bloody good value ...:) :) :)

There's no need to be rude is there?? Just because I don't agree...
Personally I find the cut of the jeans are horrendous, and the jeans are all the same.... The layout of the shop is like shopping in a market.. Its simply not a department store, it is a market..
I suppose TJ Hugues are targeting a certain market, people who simply haven't got a clue about fashion, neither have they got a clue about quality...
Its the sort of place you buy one you get one free... And people fall for it..

Who was being rude? I asked what your personal experience was or whether you were simply waffling. I personally think you were waffling. But then what do I know because according to you I have no sense of fashion or quality!!
Hmmmm now who's being rude....................?

and insulting!!!! I Do not frequent the shop either, only ever bought a shower curtain from there or 50 pence for a house I am selling but can`t moan at that.
just not my taste...
coopster1974 09-10-2004, 09:33 Sony - you say its targetting a market - well I would say its targetting a couple.
1) People who simply cant afford to pay more than they charge
2) People who dont want to spend a lot of money on clothes because they're not label freak sheep.
What is wrong with that? Why does that mean that these people have no fashion sense? It doesn't - so feel free to retract your previous statement at any time :)
At the moment I'm wearing
Adidas trainers - £20 - Sports Soccer
Rust/blue jeans £8 Tj's
Blue french rugby top £2 Matalan
So I've achieved a look that would cost nearer £100 from "mainstream" shops and £70 in my backpocket. Now who's got no sense????
Trouncer 09-10-2004, 10:08 I don't believe in going to a shop just because it's well laid out and stylised, or for the label. I go for the look, quality and most of all, whether it looks good on me. If that happens to be TJ Huges then great. I get it cheaper too. TJ's arent that bad and I think there are a few good pieces in there if you look.
My problem with TJ Hughes is that they usually don't have my size and I've of average build. However, there's nothing wrong with having a rumage round and getting a bargin. The Jeans aren't that bad and they have named brands as well.
I bet you could get clothed up in TJ and look just as good as if you got it from House of Fraser or M&S (are these really fashionable places ?). Some of the stuff in TJ's doesn't look any different than some stuff you see in Limey's or shops on Division St. It's just not presented in a 'designer' way. If you only allow yourself to shop in expensive fashion shops, then that shows how shallow you are.
Just one last thing. Whether you go to the most designer chic shop in town, or cheapest market stall, it all depends on whether it looks good on you. I've seen Jarvis Cocker get stuff from Second hand shops (is it called shabby chic ?). Personally the best fashion is to create an individual look that suites your bodyshape and build. Someone in designer gear usually looks like a slave to fashion (ie. boring). But then if you're willing to spend tons on designer stuff that's up to you. Generally I think I agree with Coopster. Sony, I think you'd be surprised if you had a good look round TJ. I go to both types of shop and if looks good, then I get it wherever it's from ?
matsalleh 09-10-2004, 10:13 The trouble with these places is unless you are a standard size you have no chance. They think all 33 inside leg are all stick insects, all 40 waist are 5 ft tall. I am 34 leg and 38-40 waist.Tj Hughes,Primark they are all the same.C&A used to have a fair range of sizes but no style.Don`t know what it is like for the Ladies.
Cheers
No no no, you simply cant say I would judge anyone who shops at tj's. Basically my point is I hate the shop, as the staff are rude, the clothes are rubbish, the machinery they've sold me have all gone wrong but one. What I am supposed to think of tj's??
I am simply expressing my opinion- which is that it's not exactly you're fashion high street shop.
You don't have to pay a fortune to look good. H&M do nice clothes at very decent prices and the shop doesnt look like a market stall..

You could have got a pair from Primark for only half that price, (not that I'm being smug or anything)
DaBouncer 09-10-2004, 13:54 You came crawling back then slim;)

Thanks. I will pop in from time to time but am unlikely to post in the same quantity as before for a while as I am too busy.
primark's mostly good but beware of ladies jeans the cheap ones go very baggy at the waist more and more as you wear them .
some of the long sleeved tops have shrunk on a cool wash.
but i must say loads of stuff is ok there.
ive gone there for years.
i usually go in for the mens socks and end up coming out loadened up.
i bought some tops from tjs for my hols in summer £5 each and theyve washed lovely.
i dont believe that the saying you get what you pay for, applies to everything.
but on the other hand i purchaced a ladies parker from debenhams nearly 2 year ago, cost a lot but its been absolutely fantastic
it washes great and still keeps its shape.
sells cheep household (kitchen stuff etc)
Cheap work ****es
may be largely tat but very handy...
sells a lot of old TAT but does it very well so you think you are getting a bargain.. lol i love it me
The topic seems to have shifted from a general TJ Hughes thread to the specifically the clothes that it sells. so to widen the thread up a little, I bought a Viners 24 piece cutlery set from TJs for £15. £60 in house of Fraser in Meadowhall. Spoontastic.
Yodameister 11-10-2004, 10:19 People don't seem to have the critical faculties to judge goods by their quality, just seem to have to go on price and where they were bought from.
You can buy decent stuff from TJs that is cheap, just as you can buy crappy stuff from a more fashionable place for an inflated price (and in the short term they know they can get away with inferior quality and get by on reputation.

But you have to bear in mind that "fashion" has never realy been about quality and value for money, it's all about image, if the fashionable shops on Division Street started selling £8 jeans, even by a top designer, they would no longer be seen as a fashuionable shop. People expect to pay more for fashionable clothes, and they won't buy them unless they are expensive.
i went into debenhams last week to buy a balti dish as i broke the handle of mine....i do like to serve food in the correct crockery when cooking.......in debs they were 30 quid for a set of five..i only wanted one so i gave it a miss and went else where, coles,BHS,atkinsons none of them had em,on my way back to the car i nipped in TJ hughes..they had the exact same set of five that i'd seen in debenams for £2.99..i bought two sets:thumbsup:
