A SHEFFIELD music legend passed away this week. Dave Hawley, father of Richard, Rebecca and Rachel, died in St Luke's Hospice on Wednesday night. He was 64. Dave was one of the wave of musicians who learned their trade in the city's clubs in the early 1960s, alongside the likes of Dave Berry and Joe Cocker. A much-respected guitarist and singer, Dave's early career saw him play with the Whirlwinds, when he met his wife Lynn, who sang alongside her sister and Frank White's wife-to-be Jean. Dave retired from the music scene in the late 1970s and worked as a turner at Woodhead Components in Sheffield to support his family. He had been suffering from cancer for a some time. "He died on Wednesday and it was a relief from the pain for him," said Richard. "He was a fantastic man - an unbelievable and very positive man, passionate about whatever he was doing, and passionate about music all his life. He passed his love of music on to me and my sisters. "My passion for music came from him. He was a very gentle man and very funny. He was cracking jokes on his death- bed. He was 64 but he made his mark and he gave us a lot. "He was way ahead of the rest musically when he was young. He had this three-finger claw-hammer style he learned from watching Earl Scruggs. "He combined that with an R&B influence and came up with something really original. "He was one of that generation that would work 12 or 14 hours in the steelworks then go out and play in a band at night. They did it for years, they were so committed to it. "He instilled a work ethic in me which has helped me. He was a fantastic man and I will miss him dearly." Richard wore his dad's leather jacket on stage to feel closer to him in recent performances - including on BBC TV's Tonight with Jools Holland. Friend and fellow musician John Firmingham said: "I first met Dave when he was with the Scott William Combo, playing at the Esquire club. "He had come through the skiffle group era, like a lot at that time. He had a real feel for bluegrass and rockabilly that few English musicians had. "I walked into the Esquire club with Dave Berry and we were impressed with Dave straight away. "In those days we could be a bit dismissive of musicians we didn't rate, but Dave stood out a mile. He had class. "I played in a band called The Cargills with Dave in the 1970s. "He was a great guitarist and singer. A strongly principled man but also very funny. A great bloke." Dave left his three children and his partner Frieda Schiefermair. His funeral will be at Hutcliffe Wood cemetery on Thursday at 1pm. |
