Hi

I decided to teach myself how to crochet and bought a book published via Coats which has some instructions and some patterns in it. I've also got the Stitch'n'Bitch Happy Hooker crochet book which has far more hints in it. I'm sticking with the Coats book at the moment for patterns and techniques because of the different terminology about the stitches but will be trying some of the Stitch'n'Bitch patterns after I've done a few of the Coats ones.

I did have a look in John Lewis yesterday and bought a ball of Debbie Bliss cotton DK to practice with but I am on the look out for some of the yarn/threads mentioned in the Coats book and I've some other questions to ask as well.

I am looking for some Coats Lyric 8/8 medium weight cotton. Does anyone know of any stockists in the Sheffield area or online?

What does that 8/8 mean?

How can I work out what would be an equivalent Patons or w.h.y. yarn?

Regards and thanks in advance

Lesley

Three words: The Wool Baa!

It's in Hunter's Bar just off the roundabout. Go in and ask Jill, if she hasn't got it she can probably get it, or point you towards something that would work instead.

Willow Fabrics (http://www.willowfabrics.com/acatalog/Anchor_Magicline_Crochet_Thread.html) is an online supplier of Coats Lyric 8/8 cotton. I've used this shop many times before for general needlework supplies and can recommend them.

I don't know what 8/8 means specifically, except that it's a way of classifying the thickness of the crochet cotton; 8/8 is roughly worsted/aran weight, apparently. There's also 4/8 which is fingering weight and 2/8, which is finer still.

As for replacements, the first step would be to match the recommended hook size. The Coats Lyric suggests a 4 mm hook, so on the ball band of any replacement yarn, you should look for that size of recommended hook. You should also match the fibre content. In the case of the Lyric, it's 100% cotton.

Interesting thing about the needle size. When I looked in JL's the cotton DK I picked up only had knitting needle sizes on it. But I figured it was about the right weight and I am using a 4mm needle just fine.

The knitting needle size was 4mm btw.

Regards and thanks for the info
