I'm making a debbie bliss pure silk bolero (the blue one - but i'm not actually making it in silk as it was faaaaaar to expensive)
It tells you to make stitches by knitting into the back and front of the stitch - but it doesn't look right. Looks like I've got a purl on a knit row and just not very tidy.
Am I doing it right and this cold has got to my brain making me doubt myself, or have I screwed up?

It does look a mess when you do it right but it is the easy way of increasing and the one that everybody knows. That's important when you are writing patterns so you don't put people off. You don't have to do it that way if you don't want - she isn't going to come around and check on you.
The lifted bar increase is easy enough and looks better (well it does to me). You need to think on that you're not making it in a stitch but in a gap between stitches so you would need to think about the pattern. If it was k2, inc1, k2 you need 5 stitches when you knit front and back but only 4 when you do a lifted increase. I generally do the make 1 left and make 1 right from here:
http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/increase.php
They are shaped increases, they slant outwards like the k2tog and slip one, knit one pass slip stitch over (or ssk) slant inwards so if you are increasing at the edges you can get them to slant the correct way (the same was as the decreases on the top of a sleeve slant in, the increases at the edges slant out)
This might be totally useless for your pattern because I don't know what the increases are used for. If you do change them and Debbie comes around and wants to know why just tell her that Caroline said it was ok.

This is the badger (https://www.ramwools.com/images/image/puresilkInside.jpg)
Third from the left, top row.
I can't work out which way the panel will go as it doesn't seem to make much sense. Might just keep going as I am because its at the end of the row and I can always sew it together away from the increased stitches
Will get some spare yarn out and have a go at the other methods. I'm determined to be an expert knitter.
You could always ask the woman at your LYS for some one-to-one free advice and tutoring.......hope you are feeling better today. missed you yesterday - non-appearance at the crochet meet and then a medical related no-show at night!!!!

Trust me - you didn't want my anywhere near you yesterday!
I hope to pop up on Sat and might have to bend your ear ;)
I'm so sorry I missed yesterday but I didn't feel that it was fair to make all those other lovely people poorly and subject them to my coughing and snivelling.
YOU'RE STUPID! (you said to call it you!):hihi:
