Some may remember a while back I was posting about Bellway homes desire to remove part of this forest for a housing development. There have been on going battles in court to try and stop Bellway by the local residents.

last word from Cookie (talking to him now) is that they have alledgedly despite laws in place - removed an ancient hedgerow. The police and health and safety have alledgedly backed this action. Aparently the protestors lawyer has put a stop to this but they don't know for how long. There is rallying call going out to anyone who can get down there to help them.

I don't understand how companies can do this. If what I am seeing is to be believed there are laws protecting the trees and hedgerows Bellway wishes to move...why is then they just tear them up without any aparent regard for the law? I don't get it. I also remember a conversation with the lady who helps to run the Friends of Norfolk park and she told me it happens in Sheffield too...what is wrong with that? I wouldn't say I am a complete tree hugger, but I just don't get it.

I am suprised this sort of thing, hasn't made national news.

After all, we all know the Robin Hood story.

There should be a law in place saying new houses can only be built in grey areas.

It has made international news. i know Cookie was interviewed by American and Candian news organisations.

I think the local papers took an interest but only after an extremely local pagan tried a publicity stunt..complete with ritual sword and clothes (he did have a permit for his sword like)

Papers round here concentrated on the Nine Ladies Protest and to some degree Thornborough henge which again are facing similar destruction.

WTF?! :loopy:

Sherwood Forest is part of our National heritage FFS! And they're chopping part of it down to make houses?!

This really sucks.

How did Belway manage to purchase this land?

It's a well known fact that planning permission (and grade listings) is regularly ignored. Why is the council shrugging it's shoulders and saying 'well, can't do anything about it now'? That's why more and more people are flouting these laws.

I'm concerned in a link between failed planning permission and the subsequent vandalism / arson of such land. Quite recently there has been planning permission turned down for housing on the site of a school and mining workshops for the reasons that the school should become a building for the community and the mining workshops should become heritage centres.

The school was then subject to an arson attack and the mining workshops have been so badly vandalised that they may have to be pulled down.

Co-incidence?
