View Full Version : Hendersons relish
I have only been on this site a short while and in no time at all I have been feeling homesick after nearly 40 years..and one thing that I miss the most is a big cow pie with a thick crust soaked in Hendersons relish..so I rang up Hendersons and asked "Can I have some relish by mail order and pay by credit card??" The telephonist said no?? we have not yet got the technology to do that, but if you send a Postal Order or Cheque to us for £10 we will send you a litre bottle full (postage free)
so anyone who misses the Relish just give them a call, you can find them on google...also Abdul has promised to send me a bottle as well.
Somehow a lack of technology seems ok in this case.
An old wordly feel.
Timbuck, have u seen the interview with the Hendersons guy on this forum?
Deffo worth a read.
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=959
Yes I read that one last night..
About three years ago Hendersons suddenly apeared on the shelves alongside Lee Perins sauce at Asda in Stockton on Tees
But after a short trial period they stopped selling it due to a lack of intrest..I've tried to introduce people around these parts to the delights of Hendersons..but they just don't seem to like it much
(strange people).
Help! Where can I buy some quickly?
I have promised Timbuck some, and Somerfields are out of stock (no surprises there  )
I've had the same experience as Timbuck. A majority of Non- Sheffielders do not take to Henderson's Relish but most displaced Sheffielders would die for it.
Whether it gets in the blood at any early age or it is simply a Sheffield thing that evokes such memories of days gone by I do not know.
One thing is certain the old 'Mucky Rash' and the Meat and Tater pie are not the same without the old Henderon's Relish.
In the past I have smuggled it out, shipped it out and even exported with the companies machinery.
I've also tested all the other relishes and believe me there are quite a few and none come up to the old Henderson's.
I ought to be on the sales team, didn't I?
Bushbaby 23-03-2004, 10:46 There is now a chain of Cornish Pasty shops (there's one on Pinstone Street) which has Hendo's at many of its outlets nationwide. I came across it at the National Beer Festival at Earl's Court a couple of years ago. They even have their own labels.
sweetdexter 23-03-2004, 18:06 I left Sheffield in 66 ,for Canada.
On my infrequent visits back to the old sod I usually buy a couple of bottles.
Last summer my sister came to visit me ,she asked if she could bring anything over.
of course I said I was out of Hendersons.
She brought me a gallon jug.[Bless her heart.]
I have my son addicted to it ,and have sent some to another ex-pat over here.
I think PopT is right it gets in your blood.
There is a recipe book put out by Hendersons.
One of the contributers served it to President Clinton
The book is available at the Sheffield shop beside the Town Hall
If my memory serves me right I think it used to be called "Hendersons Yorkshire Relish"
I have a 150 year old recipe for "Convent Yorkshire Relish".
Supposedly made by nuns
MissEllie 23-03-2004, 19:25 I have it brought over from England when anybody comes. My husband (a Yank) hides it from me so he can have it.:D
Haven't given it to anybody here yet who doesn't like it.
left sheffield 22yrs ago no one dare visit without a bottle, but now my son lives in Heeley where I was born(he was born in Norfolk)Funny how the world turns round!
little malc 25-03-2004, 10:50 Living in Scarborough, I missed Hendersons relish, but have now found a shop in Brid which stocks it, great!
We also visited Knaresborough for a day out, we found a very posh shop selling up market produce, they had Hendersons on a shelf with other "exotic sauces" cheaky beggars were charging £2 68 for it!!
mojoworking 25-03-2004, 12:02 I've still got a bottle of the Wednesday special edition relish with the blue & white striped label, although it must be reaching its use by date.
My cousin, who's a United fan, claims the red & white version tastes better! :)
I've just got back from Tesco's with 2 LB of stewing beef, One turnip, some carrots, and spuds..in the Larder (Kitchen cupboard) we have the flour cooking fat, salt and all that sort of gubbins and tomorrow the wife is going to make a "cow pie" cos' tomorrows the day that the Relish arrives, thanks to Abdul Too suns..My family up here, Son, Daughter & Grand children and spouses have all been informed and they are all coming round to tuck in..also they will bring bottles to take away a small ration of relish....It sounds like Christmas "dunt it ehh"
I've still got a bottle of The Blades special edition which my neice gave to my sister when she visited Sheffield some years ago. My sister has the Wednesday one. My Sheffield United one still sits proudly in my kitchen cupboard and I use the Hendersons relish from another bottle which I just happen to have and cant remember how I came by that one
someone told me hendersons was closing down, after realising it was a sick joke i patted my head down and celebrated with a meat and potato pie and mushy peas armed with my bottle of relish next to me not worrying about how much i use cause i can just trot off to the shop when i need some more.
reading your stories brought a tear to my eye ha ha relying on visits for a bottle of hendersons.
for the best sob story i am willing to post a bottle of hendersons to you !!
Bushbaby 19-05-2004, 09:12 For a lovely quick snack, lightly toast a pitta bread. Open it up into a pocket. Two slices of Cheddar, a few jalapenos, loads of Hendo's, then back in the toaster to melt the cheese. Mmmm. Tasty but cheap.

Bushbaby 19-05-2004, 16:20 Just use "Good to Yourself" cheese slices

You can now buy Henderson's online from the website of local design agency theWorkshop - http://www.theworkshop.co.uk/shop/
I must hold up my hand and declare my interest at this point - I work for them - but I thought people out there would be interested to know!
kingfisher 25-06-2004, 18:15 I recently went to stay with my son in London with strict instructions not to forget his 2 bottles of Hendersons relish which took my mind back to the days in the 1930,s when i went to Wellingborough to stay with my grandparents, and always took a couple of large bottles of Hendesons. I believe in those days the small bottles were one penny and the larger twopence with like a sealing wax cover on the corks.

Hi Timbuck... I get the relatives to bring the stuff over to Australia in their baggage. God knows what the customs think when they arrive rattling bottles of Henderson's rather than duty free.
Of course, a fight then ensues between the family members as we all stake a claim on the much loved and missed condiment.

Hey, I thought that this was great until I tried to place an order. They wanted £7.50 postage for a litre bottle of Hendersons priced at £4.99. No way.
Bushbaby 30-06-2004, 07:15 You want quality - You gotta pay for it!

Postage has now been revised - it's £5.50 for UK delivery (registered post) for the litre bottle. It weighs a kilogram so it's a fair price.
"Because you're worth it!"
Good News folks, you can now get Hendo's in "The Weighouse" in the North East..Maybe it's on sale in other Areas...Only it's a quid per 10 fl oz bottle.
do all the ex-pats miss it or can you get hold of it,if i had to have meat n tatty pie without mi hendersons i'd go mad
I can buy it in Sainsbury's at Southport. Like you, I can't imagine life without it. It is "in the blood"...
craigmason 08-10-2004, 07:19 who prefer's lea & perrins instead of hendersons relish ?????
i think hendersons relish is bloody awful. If it was made somewhere other than Sheffield nobody here would rate it.
Dick_Turpin 08-10-2004, 08:10 Oh I love it. I like a bit on pie and chips. Obviously its nice in stew.
I used to work with a fella that used to pour it on his crisps.
The 2 condiments tend to be used with slightly different dishes. If you live in Sheffield then it's mandatory to put Hendersons Relish on Meat and Potato pie! Mmm lovely. However if I want to spice up a mug of hot oxo drink I find Worcester Sauce works better...

Moon Maiden 08-10-2004, 08:52 I know someone who has a bacon and bean sandwich and pours hendersons on it
I use it in my stews and casseroles....never used the other stuff what is it again?
Captain_Scarlet 08-10-2004, 09:06 Henderson's relish rules !
On cottage pies, shepperd's pies & stews, mmmmmmhlicious
I love the sign on the side of their building
"Hendersons Relish - Made in Sheffield for over a 100 years"
Priceless...and if you look in the window there's faded pics of t-shirts and other such clothing goodies for sale. I wonder if anyone's ever bought one?

carcrash 08-10-2004, 11:15 I have to send bottles of the stuff around the country and the world for people who miss it so much.

Hell no - Henderson's Relish Rules!
RELISH RELISH RELISH BABY!!!!!
pitsmoorlad 08-10-2004, 11:31 Hendersons is wonderful. On pie & mushy peas it's a must, but I have it on yorkie pud & gravy, in fact anything involving gravy. Wife has it on egg & beans. But have you ever added it to Spag Bol while the Bol is cooking. It adds a great extra taste. Does anyone have Hash? Not the druggie hash, the mince- meat, veg. taters and everything else in a big casserole dish. Hash without relish is like Morecambe without Wise. Unthinkable.

Great response to that one!
Ive just found out that the "Henderson family" used to produce Machine Tools in their early years..particulary a small engineering lathe called the " FAIRCUT"..if anyone has got one of these if might be worth a bit of money to collectors.

muddycoffee 05-12-2004, 09:17 I can't believe I've only just found this Hendos thread. For Half a decade I have been running the Un - Official, Un - authorised
Henderson's Relish - Fanclub. Where you can join in with the myth and mystery of Leavygreave Road's Worst kept secret.
Over the years we've had feedback from all over the globe. Latest news is that since 9.11, you can't supply it to the USA with out a special licence, which is far too time consuming and expensive to obtain.
Learn about the strange and unfathomable uses that people are putting "south yourkshire's nectar of the gods" to. And regions where it is on trial..
just follow the link

when we used to live down south we used to stock up on visits back. Meat and Potato pie is just not the same without it....
Albatross 05-12-2004, 16:09 I have just moved from Sheffield to Surrey BC and because of the rarity of Hendersons outside of the Sheffield area I brought half a dozen bottles with me (meat 'n' tater pie aint the same without it):P
I also did a search online and I have found that Hendersons now have their own web site with recipe's and info etc.
http://www.hendersons-relish.co.uk/
Well worth a visit just for those but it also has a link to order online and have it shipped out to you.

Tali5Man 07-12-2004, 12:41 I have reservations about the fact that it contains saccharin. If it is such a classic recipe, wouldn't it contain sugar instead?
This makes me believe that perhaps saccharin has been adopted instead of sugar to cut costs. If this is the case then I think they may well be shooting themselves in the foot, as there are many who wouldn't buy it.
As well as the health scares(it has been dogged by suspicion that it causes cancer), artificial sweetners tend to leave a bitter aftertaste. Not what you would normally put in a product that relies so much on its taste!
Hmmmmm
somebody trying it on?
