Hiya my little girl is expecting a litter of babies soon, am so excited, she has had a scan to confirm today, what i want to no is, when we are pregnant we can not eat certain foods, does this apply to pregnant bitches, some might think what a daft question, but i have been told to keep her off red meat, and liver is a no no, and in a morning they love pate on toast, and pate is liver based. Your advice would be great. Am going to be a nan nan, lol, She has had a good check over today and she is very fit and healthy, but i forgot to ask, about food. The vet gave me some frontline for them both and said it is safe to use on the new mum, bit worried about that, i dont want nothing to harm her.

Many thanks

doesnt' the liver filter out the nasty stuff from the blood? I'm sure it's full of things that are not good for the pups

Can't you get special foods for brood bitches too? as you can with 'large breeds' and 'senior dogs'?

With the frontline - I'd not treat her after the pups arrive, as they recommend to keep dogs apart before it dries, and it has to be applied where they can't lick it off themselves

sorry I can't be of more help :(

http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/agesandstages/pregnancy/whenyrpregnant/Liver products and supplements containing vitamin A
Make sure you don't have too much vitamin A. This means you should avoid eating liver and liver products such as pâté and avoid taking supplements containing vitamin A or fish liver oils (which contain high levels of vitamin A). You need some vitamin A, but having too much means that levels could build up and may harm your unborn baby. Ask your GP or midwife if you want more information.

I gave my dogs "beta " when she had pups...but she was a german shepherd.!

I think you should feed her stuff that is high in protein..and "beta" is exactly that.

hey, your bitch needs to be fed on a puppy food, and she should continue to be fed on it until the pups have stopped suckling. puppy food is higher in protien, oils (fat), calcium and vit D3 than adult food and she needs these because the puppies will need them and, just like when we are pregnant, if she is not being fed extra calcium, for example the puppies will take it from her. this is why we get free dental care when we are pregnant, because the baby can take away the calcium from our diet.

Personally i dont like beta, it is purinas mid-quality product, bakers is their low-quality product (although you wouldnt think it from the price), their highest quality product, Pro Plan however is not much more costly than beta, but the quality doesnt even compare. My dogs are fed on Pro Plan and i dont hesitate to recommend it to any of my customers.

Personally I think that you should avoid pate and the like while she's pregnant, although the other reason for avoiding pate has already passed. As well as the risks of harm to her or the pups from too much vitamin A, there's a risk from Listeria that can be spread through pates, soft cheeses and the like, but the biggest risk is during the early parts of pregnancy, when Listeria can cause malformations and miscarriage.

If she's on a really good quality puppy food she'll be getting everything she needs from it, but if you have to offer her treats, there's nothing wrong with a little bit of cheese (good for the protein and calcium, but fatty so don't offer her too much) or a little taste of sardines in oil or similar. I'd avoid pate and soft cheese for any pregnancy.
