I don't use my battery anymore so my laptop is always running through the mains.

However, it keeps cutting out. I don't think that the problem is with the power supply.

If the plug (into the laptop) is in fully the laptop goes off. If I pull it out slightly it comes back on. It won't stay in this position though that that is no use.

Is this a job for a specialist or could it be done by someone with a little know-how (not me), a selection of tools and some help from you kind people?

If you wobble the plug that connects into the laptop and it goes iff then it's probably the connection on the main board. If you hold the conenctor still and wable the cable close to it and it goes off then cutting and resoldering the connector back on may solve it.
