Hello,
It has been over twenty years since I have been in Sheffield and I will be visiting in August. I will be traveling from the US to attend a wedding in Sweden and will be stopping in Sheffield for a couple of days and need to price out this leg of my trip.
I am hoping that some friendly Sheffield Forum users may be able to assist me.
Any advice on the cost of a taxi and bus as well as what a train would cost from either London or Manchester would be most appreciated. If anyone operates a bucket shoppe, I would also be interested in the what is would cost to fly to other parts of Europe from Manchester.
Thank you in advance!!! :)

If you know what dates and times you are arriving, you can get special tickets from transpennine express for manchester airport to sheffield (called airport getaway) for around £22 return, but they are only released for sale around 11 weeks before the date of travel (website: http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/tickets/fares.asp), otherwise there are lots of cheap deals to be had by booking trains well in advance (check out thetrainline.com).
buses are pretty expensive (1.60 for a single journey of around 2 miles) but there are saver tickets available for multiple journeys (http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/).
Taxi's for the same distance journey are around £5 in a black cab.
hope this helps (and enjoy your trip!)

Joeyannie thanks for all your wonderful advice. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry...It just struck me that the last time I took a bus in Sheffield, I only paid 10 pence. Suddenly I feel quite old...
If you're using public transport the advantages of using Manchester Airport are huge. There's a train that runs directly from the terminal into Sheffield Midland Station at something like half hourly intervals.

the train runs about every hour and a half to sheffield. if youre coming in from the states im imagining you will probably be on the first train of the morning. it will get packed while you travel through manchester but it will ease up after 2/3 stops.
cabs from the airport will run you about £60. £40 if you pre-book (pm for a great local manc cabbie)
id also sign up for transpennine express email. it will let you know about sales and specials. though the last time i bought tickets online with them i had to get off the train at manc picadilly because the airport didnt have the technology to print my pre-booked tickets. if you buy the tickets day of its only £22 for an open return
