After over 30 years has a TV weatherman Michael Fish has retired.

He is best remembered for the blunder he made when a woman called up earlier stating that she had heard a hurricane was on the way. Fish said on air "Well, don't worry if you're watching, there isn't.

The next morning Britain woke up to a trail of destruction left by the worst storm in hundreds of years.

Believe me it was a Hurricane... winds up to 100mph in October 1987 causing devastation...

Not sure if you had it up North but we certainly did down South i have pictures of uprooted trees... Damaged cars / houses / fairground rides etc...

It was a scary experience... Nothing like they have abroad but even so for England it was pretty nasty...

We had another.... Not sure what year... around 88/89 i think... anyway... I stood and watched my parents shed being blown apart... along with the fencing being blown all over the garden... It was far too windy for me to do anything about it...

This second one during the day so you could see all the damage that it was causing...

It wasnt as powerful as the first one in 1987 but was still scary... defo with being home alone too!

So yeah Michael Fish in October 1987 got the weather forecast WRONG!!! :nono:

I remember it well... Luckily we only had a few fence panels missing along with a few tiles off the roof of my parents home...

Couldnt believe the size of the trees that were uprooted... didnt think it would be possible... we got some good pictures...

It was one big nightmare!

Must be awful for him tho to be living with that guilt of getting it wrong knowing that peoples worldly goods/lives were lost...

Bet no one thought about that...

To be honest i hadnt thought about it until now...

But like they say we ALL make mistakes... unfortunately his was made in front of millions... :?

Happy Retirement

Fish says he was not talking about the UK when he made the comment and the repeated misinterpretation of his remarks angered him for a long time.

Now he is hoping to turn it to his advantage.

He says: "My remarks referred to Florida and were a link to a news story about devastation in the Caribbean that had just been broadcast.

"The phone call was a member of staff reassuring his mother just before she set off there on holiday. I did broadcast saying 'batten down the hatches there's some really stormy weather on the way' - if the full clip is used all would be revealed.

"It has been the bane of my life until now, but I'm hoping to cash in on it if any clever advertising executive wants to use me in a campaign for insurance or such like."
