Hello all,

I may have an opportunity to move to Sheffield with my wife next September and work at the University of Sheffield as part of a job exchange. I'm quite excited and would love to make it work.

The trick is, I will continue to get paid in measly Canadian dollars, but obviously my expenses would be in UK pounds. Given the currency exchange rate at the moment, this is a somewhat daunting proposition. I've read that Sheffield is one of the less expensive cities in the UK, but have been unable to find anything that gives a reasonable estimate for overall monthly living costs.

We would be looking for modest, clean, furnished accommodation with one or two bedrooms somewhere with public transit access to the University. I estimate our budget for housing would likely be no more than 500/month. Is this even possible? We are not students, but are fairly young and could handle somewhat of a student lifestyle, but we wouldn't want to be in a totally student neighbourhood.

Can anyone give estimates on other monthly living expenses: groceries, public transit, etc?

Obviously this is fairly subjective and depends on where you live and lifestyle choices, but what would be a reasonable "low-average" month.

I'd sure love to be able to make this work, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Finding accomadation shouldn't be too much of a problem if you're able to spend £500 a month. Last month a friend I was helping with a £300 maximum found several places within her range,
There's a huge range of shops in Sheffield , several supermarket chains, Morrisons being one of the better ones price wise but then there are the cheaper shops Aldi and Netto, which if you're not unduly concerned with brand names are remarkably cheap for weekly groceries.
A lot of Sheffield estate agents are also letting agents and most of them have web sites updated frequently with available properties, If you see anything and need further info on the area it's in I'm sure someone on the Forum will be able to help you.

Send a PM to a fellow citizen of your country here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=2022).
She should be able to give you some advice since she and her husband made the jump from Canadian shores to Sheffield :D

Good luck with it
