Insanity 06-10-2004, 10:44 PM Anyone know where The Broad Fall Tavern in Sheffield is ?
Not sure if it is actuallly the Boardwalk , or not???!!!
and its just changed names ?
Cheers!
Shafter 06-10-2004, 11:14 PM Sure you not thinking of the Broadfield?
Insanity 06-10-2004, 11:27 PM No , the reason i ask , is because its mentioned in a book I'm reading at the moment -
- I'm a big Iron Maiden fan and The Broad Fall Tavern was where the lead singer for Maiden , Bruce Dickinson had his first gig, we want to check it out!
in the book it says the place still has gigs !.......so I'm thinking maybe its actually Boardwalk? .......and they changed the name???
PaulV 07-10-2004, 07:49 PM Don't think so. The Boardwalk was the Black Swan before, for millions of years.

Shafter 07-10-2004, 08:57 PM Does it say the year or the name of the band he was with at the time?
The Broadfield used to do a lot of gigs in the late 70s/early 80s and "Broadfall" sounds like someones written down what someone said & misspelt the pub name??

doubt that very much , its written in the official authorised Iron Maiden biography, so i doubt it would be written wrong!
but I'll check out their website , just in case! : -) and thankx!

I'll check in the book and let you know!
Strix 17-10-2004, 11:53 PM Awww, this one seems to have gone dry. I was looking forward to reading the answer! Wallbuilder? Anybody else of that era?
(http://www.bookofhours.34sp.com/bdwbn/bio.html says it was summer '76)
WallBuilder 18-10-2004, 01:14 AM Just for you Strix and of course anyone else who may read this,
I've looked on the web for any mention of a tavern in the city with a name the same as or like Broadfall Can't find a mention of it anywhere I even widened my search to include Chesterfield and Rotherham and still nothing.
The Broadfield had a lot of small bands playing there and the only other close match is the Broomhill Tavern which I can't recall ever having bands on. I can only assume from this that the official book is wrong and I did find it quoted on a web site as well an extract taken from the book, can only suggest someone contacts the books author for clarification, you never know I might even do that myself just for the fun of it.
Strix 18-10-2004, 01:23 AM Cheers WB! Looking forward to something conclusive.
WallBuilder 18-10-2004, 01:50 AM Just been rooting around for a few minutes and have found an e-mail address for the site that refers to the tavern, I've sent them an e-mail so now we just have to sit back and see what develops, watch this space.
Bear in mind that essential credentials for an Iron Maiden biographer would probaly include an exhaustive knowledge of 70s/80s metal, long guitar solos and spandex but not necessarily
late 70s sheffield pubs!!
Be interested to see what you come up with...
WallBuilder 18-10-2004, 06:22 PM Guess what? I've had a response!!
A very friendly e-mail saying that the info probably comes from the 'run to the hills Iron Maiden biography' as told by Bruce Dickinson to Mick Wall.
The e-mail has promised to look into this further and will respond again when they get more info

Thanks so much for your help with this! \m/
I'm also on Bruce's fansite , screamforme.co.uk , i may ask on there also!
Thanks again WALLBUILDER , and I'll wait eagerly for the result of that email :-)
: rock :
UP THE IRONS!!!!!!
WallBuilder 20-10-2004, 01:36 AM I've had a second e-mail from the site that mentioned the tavern, they got their information off the 'run to the hills' biography apparently page 207.
I've obviously set the cat amongst the pigeons as the site designer is now keenly interested to get to the bottom of this little mystery. He'll be looking into it further and we have promised to swap any info that we discover. My plan is to send Bruce an e-mail directly or as directly as I can, also I may see if there are any leads to the other band members, this could take some time but as before keep watching this space.

WallBuilder 21-10-2004, 01:32 AM Latest update:
Have sent an e-mail to the radio station where Bruce Dickinson hosts a rock radio show, as I didn't recieve anything by the following day I decided to try and track down Mick Wall the author, with this in mind I found the publisher in question and have sent off another e-mail. I also found Mick Wall's agent but they're living in the middle ages and don't have an e-mail address. I did locate a phone number though so tomorrow I'll try ringing them.
I've also got the line-up for the band Bruce first sang in so tomorrow as well I might try a search on Friends Reunited and see if anything comes up.
I'm a sad little person who probably spends far too much time on the computer.
I'll let you know what transpires.

I think his first band was Samson!??
Thanka again!!!!
Strix 21-10-2004, 10:35 PM Oooh, this is getting interesting. Wasn't the first band something like Styx (but they didn't know about the really famous band from the states with that name)?
WallBuilder 21-10-2004, 11:26 PM Come on people do your research, in 1976 the first band that he was the lead vocalist for was called 'Paradox' it's not clear why but they then changed the name to 'Styx' apparently without knowing there was an american band with that name. Without going back onto the net I'm not certain but he then was in a further band before 'Sanson'. Still no response from his radio show so they may be getting another e-mail tomorrow, I'll give the big publishing company another few days to respond. A message has been passed on to Mick Wall's agent so we'll have to see how long that takes.
I found some pics on the net yesterday so at least now I know who I'm researching as although inhabiting places where Iron Maiden could be heard I wouldn't claim to be a fan, I'm much more into Focus, Curved Air or Camel.
WallBuilder 22-10-2004, 12:26 PM As promised managed to contact Mick Wall's agent and they hopefully are going to send on an e-mail to him.
In it I have mentioned the tavern name and asked for clarification.
Bit between the teeth and starting to froth at the mouth
Strix 31-10-2004, 01:31 AM Any news yet, WB?
WallBuilder 31-10-2004, 02:05 AM Hi Stryx,
Mick Wall sent a message back to me via his agent, he suggested the Iron Maiden web site and Bruce's radio show, I'd tried both of these avenues and hadn't got very far in fact nowhere at all. Bruce's radio show haven't even bothered to respond acknowledging my two e-mails so I'm thinking of contacting the radio station directly, after all what's the point of one of their shows having it's own e-mail address if they don't have the courtesy to respond when contacted on it?
A guy who has a Bruce Dickinson site has been in touch with me three times now he says the Iron Maiden official site aren't very good at responding to querieseither, so much for the fans then. He's in regular contact withe a band member from Sanson so may have a way of contacting Bruce directly, he's trying to find out the info on the Broad Fall for me.
Mick Wall's agent is going to get another e-mail from me and as Mick Wall is such a well known author on the rock scene I'm going to ask him to make some enquiries directly.
So in answer to your question, no news as yet but watch this space as I'm not about to give up yet-awhile.
WallBuilder 27-08-2005, 08:24 PM Told you I wasn't going to give up didn't i?
I've been quietly pestering Radio 2 staff who have worked with Bruce on his show and it would seem are still in contact with him.
After many months I've had an answer so are you ready for it?
Bruce's first public performance was in the BROADFIELD TAVERN on Abbeydale road.
All I can say after this is a big 'boo' to Mick wall for not checking his facts in the first place.
