*Twinkle* 05-02-2007, 04:37 PM I'm spending this afternoon researching places to do my legal practice course... I've always been certain that I'd complete all my legal education in Sheffield, however I now wish to spread my wings and see where else there is.
I've been looking at Nottingham Law school and I wondered what kind of a place Nottingham is like to live in? It'll be pretty central as its university...
Can anyone shed any light?

I spent the first half of my life in Nottingham. It's a fine city to live in.
Strix 05-02-2007, 05:01 PM My sister used to live in Mapperley - I liked Nottingham :)
Just make sure you steer clear of the red light district, an area known as 'St Anne's', and the main road where they introduced traffic calming to stop kerb crawling - Woodborough Rd (only the town end ;) )
squeakyclean 05-02-2007, 05:06 PM My OH is from Bobbersmill in Nottingham, and I don't think he would go back now. Alot has changed in the last few years, but I guess that applies to most areas.
I think he still prefers the town centre to Sheffield though,as it is more compact, with 2 indoor shopping centres.
The pubs etc used to be ok... but that was a long time ago:)
*Twinkle* 05-02-2007, 07:02 PM This is so exciting, I know nothing about it!
I'm gonna hop in the car and go and see in the next couple of weeks... Might extend it into a girls weekend so I can check out the nightlife and talent at the same time :P :D
Any tips would be appreciated!
(Thanks for the red light warning)
Tarquin 05-02-2007, 11:21 PM Do Nottingham have a forum like this ?

Nowhere in the world has a forum like this......
weenireeni 05-02-2007, 11:29 PM nottingham is nice for shopping, not huge choice, but a better range than sheffield.
ive heard lots of good things about the night life but not tried it myself.
id say go for it! i dont think anyone should stay in the same city all their life - need to try new things!
and if youre at uni it will be sooo easy to make new friends - plus your current friends will want to visit!
does birmingham offer your course? thats the best place for shopping imo :hihi:
BobbyBunny 05-02-2007, 11:35 PM Notts is a nice place but scary.. Don't want to put you off, but it has the highest guncrime rate in England.
Lol. :hihi: Its a fun place though, If you have the energy to walk all the way up the city center when your rushing.. :hihi:

It's not scary! My little brother lived in the Meadows and St Annes for ages and never got shot once.
fozzybronze 05-02-2007, 11:37 PM I grew up in Nottingham. Moved there when I was 7, until I went to college at 19.
I moved back there when I was 23 and didnt move til Sheffield until I was 30....5 years ago
Nottingham is home, so I am biased, and is a fantastic place to live and socialise. Lots of pubs, wine bars, restaurants, night life, shops, sports facilities etc.
There are dodgy areas, like the Forest, Hyson Green, Meadows etc...but there are some really nice areas too.
Beeston is to the west of the Uni and a decent place to live...and The Park is really posh right in the centre.
Wherever you think of going, I will try and give you my honest opinion of the place.
TBH, as a city, Sheffield is not a patch on Nottingham, however, the people of Sheffield are far friendlier IMO.

I have NEVER seen any trouble whilst out in Nottingham City Centre - and that includes punch ups. The (gun) crime that makes the papers is restricted to certain areas.
BobbyBunny 05-02-2007, 11:50 PM I've had a lot of trouble there, maybe that's because I'm 'Different'. In the daytime its a nice place, but I find big groups of men (be they black, white, wearing 'hoodies' or not) intimidating. Especially when they walk around with their hands in the pockets looking suspicious.
ToryCynic 06-02-2007, 12:53 AM Do Nottingham have a forum like this ?
No.
Avoid: St Ann's, parts of Clifton, Bulwell, Strelley, Broxtowe, Bilborough and Sneinton; Bestwood Park (Estate), Top Valley, Aspley, Forest Fields, Cinderhill, Hyson Green.
Go with: Hucknall, Beeston, Wallaton, West Bridgford, Cartlon, Netherfield, Mapperley, Gedling, Kimberley, Arnold (the part toward T/V is a bit grim), Rushcliffe, Chilwell, Bramcote.
Their tram service is to be extended - one line to Clifton and the other to Beeston.
sauerkraut 06-02-2007, 09:12 AM I went to Nottingham Law School (well, actually it were still the Poly in them days - but if I say that it will give away how long ago it was!) I loved it, and found Nottingham a great place to live. Though not as good as Sheffield of course!
I lived near the University, near Lenton (the Hunters Bar of Nottingham perhaps?) and never had any trouble - though I was a bit wary of Lenton Boulevard. A very convenient location for getting into town and all the studenty stuff though.
kitty123 06-02-2007, 08:41 PM I recently moved to sheffield from Nottingham, the city is great loads of good shops and bars. Be careful where you live, I lived in Beeston (ok) Mapperly Park (beautiful but surrounded by dodgy areas) The Park (lovely but entry price very high) I could only afford a shoe box, West Brdgford (lovely more family but great links to city and good locals) The city is great very different to sheffield, not got the nice hills and countryside, and the people are a bit more em less friendly.

If going in the car watch out for these http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40567000/jpg/_40567447_specs_cameras203.jpg They seem to be everywhere, But then again you`ll not be speeding one hopes:) .Nottingham has good bits and bad bits just like everywhere else.:)
*Twinkle* 07-02-2007, 09:34 PM I've got the prospectus for the law school in nottingham and I think it will be my last reserve choice. They take anyone with a 2.2, and most law firms demand a 2.1, so I dont really think its the right one for me... It may encourage me to stop working so hard, which isnt good! However I fully intend to visit, get a feel for different cities.
It'll be well weird moving away, I wish I'd gone away for uni now... That is my biggest regret in life, I should have followed my head, not my heart. But I think it will open up new avenues for me... Stepping away from my safety net of having my parents 15 minutes away from me.
kitty123 07-02-2007, 09:44 PM Go for it and enjoy, but do be careful one thing i would say it's not as safe as Sheffield;)
sauerkraut 08-02-2007, 08:55 AM Maybe things have changed since I was there but the law school in Nottingham always had a very good reputation and I think it's always been rated "excellent" when it's been assessed. The accounts lecturer when I was there consistently had the highest pass rate in the country for his students(it was Law Society Finals in those days) - well he must have been good to get me through with honours!! I can assure you there was never the slightest temptation (or opportunity!) to stop working hard :P
That's my two pennorth in favour of Nottingham for you anyway - and I'm happy to admit it could be different now as it's over 15 years since I was there.
Have fun deciding
*Twinkle* 08-02-2007, 12:26 PM Argh its so scary! But I shall be dragging my best mate around with me to find somewhere suitable... Road trip!
I may infact live in halls, which will be an entirely new experience for me...
I guess I feel a bit less trapped as previously I always thought I would finish my education and get my job in Sheffield... But really I should be spreading my wings a little further.
Neverata 08-02-2007, 05:28 PM I moved from Nottingham in November 2005, and i still miss it!
Its a nice place to live in, if you know where you're going and once you're a student there, there is always someone who knows it well
I'd say go for it, i moved to Sheff without knowing it AND without knowing anyone. Its character building!
Good luck

Oh I'm brave enough, trust me! :P :D I'm on the prowl for a new satnav so I can find all these places! :P
Oh, and do you know if there are any halls of residence near to the law school?
Strix 08-02-2007, 07:21 PM Perhaps the thing to watch out for more than gun crime is the street racing ;)
Don't get in the way of it - let the idiots get on with it - and make sure you know how to use a rear view mirror to stay safe ;)

Indeed, I'm hearing all sorts about different areas too. However Sheffield does have horror stories of its own!
I'm quite liking the look of the college of law at York... But I should imagine theres something undesirable about there too! :P
Strix 08-02-2007, 08:25 PM Nope - York's nice ;)
Mr Strix has lived there twice. The second time was when we were relocating but plumped for Sheffield in preference to high property prices and the severe risk of flooding :D
Renting is different though, and he did have a flat well above the highest flood line ;)
Stevie G 08-02-2007, 10:27 PM I'm from Nottingham + moved to Sheffield.Mate of mine actually went to Nottm. Law School and really enjoyed it. There's alot of students there, just like in Sheff the uni's in the centre of town and if you can think of what Sheff will be like once all the roadworks/building/redevelopment has finished then thats pretty much what Nottinghams like. Lots of new flats/redeveloped areas. It's not as bad as some people think, St Anns is to be avoided if possible though and also maybe the Meadows.
*Twinkle* 08-02-2007, 10:31 PM Stevie G,
Did your mate stay in halls?
rbos123 10-02-2007, 09:36 PM Nottingham does have a forum. The URL IS:nottingham-forum.co.uk/
