View Full Version : Bradford curry in Sheffield
crookesey 05-02-2007, 10:06 Has anyone tried this?
www.realbradfordcurry.com
I saw it on TV being endorsed by the top guy at Harry Ramsdens who I think has an interest in the company.
Delivery to your Sheffield front door, good quality, prices look reasonable but as the minimum order is quite high I just wondered if anyone has used them.
The_Boy_Hoy 05-02-2007, 10:14 i saw this on look north or caledar, cant remember which, the harry ramsdens bloke came up with it and has the money behind it, but, i'm sure they said the delivery was like £17 or sommat stupid, the food looks ace and i'm sure its top notch but everyone must have a good curry house near em, is it really worth a massive delivery charge.

Yes that is where I saw it but thought that I heard that delivery was £7.00 which wouldn't be too bad if the food was as good as they say and if you are placing a substantial order.
However I can't find a definative delivery charge on their web site, can anyone do any better?

http://www.realbradfordcurry.com/custo_info.asp?cust_men=1956
"There is a delivery charge of £6.95 (Tuesday - Fridays) which is shown separately at the end of your order. We can arrange a Saturday morning delivery for an additional £10 supplement."
Minimum order of £25.
It is not really designed for one-off orders.
More a case of getting a big order in and freezing it for future use.
Correction:
ALL orders are delivered frozen!
MuteWitness 05-02-2007, 10:50 I would like to know if it is as nice when youve warmed it up as it is eating it "fresh".
crookesey 05-02-2007, 10:59 I would like to know if it is as nice when youve warmed it up as it is eating it "fresh".
As with anything frozen it needs to be naturally defrosted and properly reheated. As they currently have a £5.00 discount this more or less takes care of the delivery charge so I think that I will give it a go and of course post my findings.
Bradford has the best curry houses, and the cheapest, if you know where to go.
TattyBear 05-02-2007, 15:54 Im thinking of ordering this this friday to eat on saturday for me and my partner with a nice bottle of wine.
Anyone know anyone who has tried it?

Agreed. Sigh I miss North Leeds.
SORRY!! Just a momentary lack of loyalty.
I love Sheffield!!!
pauly1664 05-02-2007, 19:23 why not just go to mangla at pitsmoor????? excelent food
crookesey 06-02-2007, 08:51 why not just go to mangla at pitsmoor????? excelent food
I'm sure that you're right but when you live at the other side of the city a take away would be a bit tricky. That's why I thought this Bradford set up might come in handy, apparantly they factor out each type of meal to specialists instead of preparing everything under one roof.
Someone once told me that an average Bradford curry is far better than the very best in Sheffield so I am quite looking forward to trying what is marketed as Bradford's best.
pauly1664 06-02-2007, 20:02 im guessin from your name u maybe from crookes..i live in woodhouse and they deliver to me..also i got mates in killamarsh and they go to him to..anyway give mangla a try i dont think u will be dissapointed..go and have a meal one night they dont sell alcohol but u can take your own.
Its my mums birthday in a couple of weeks and we are having a family get together and it has been mentioned to order a few dishes from them and see what they are like, so unless anyone says otherwise watch this space......
They do sound rather tasty and you cant go wrong with a curry from Bradford, unless you go to India itself.
Another point, why oh why can I not find a good Indian takeaway, I try one, and its ok so I order again a few weeks later and pants! I dont mind paying a little bit more so long as its turns out consistently good food.

First of all an Indian meal is not the same as a Pakistani meal and there are very few genuine Indian outlets in Sheffield. I daresay that all of us that have only experienced Pakistani food in Sheffield have never tasted the very best as is supposedly the norm in Bradford.
I have high hopes of this Bradford set up as my experiences of local curry houses are about the same as yours. Unfortunately this can be expanded to most restauraunts and takeaways in Sheffield irrespective of their ethnicity, I am convinced the few good experiences are accidents and the garbage that we usually get served up is the norm.

You could just get a curry from the Aagrah in Leopold Square (takeaway or eat-in, they don't deliver). They're a Bradford company and the recipes used are the same. I've eaten in the Bradford one for 14 yearsish and the Sheffield one is great too.

Not made in bradford...but made in sheffield ....by a guy from bradford !
There may be a reasonable explanation why one restaurant has better food or better atomosphere but surely simply linking it to Bradford isn't going to make it instantly better still is it?
Manchester and Bradford do have more restaurants but quality in some of Sheffield places is just as good. The new place being done up on West Street just behind the Walkabout is something to look forward to though. Nawaab Bufet restaurant chain are opening up there and if it's anything like the one in Manchester then it will give likes of Akbars and Aagra some serious competition I hope, and put Sheffield up with Manchester and Bradford for offering a good veriety of high standard curry houses.

I genuinely think Aagrah is rubbish.......not worth the price & the quality of food is err sh:(te.

Apart from Mangla I can't say I've found a Sheffield curry house as good as ones in Bradford and Keighley. There's one in Keighley which I go to fairly regular and it is lovely - it's run by the cousin of the bloke who runs the Balti King in Broomhall but that is no comparison - fresh spices rather than Pataks, wide menu, hot but really flavoured as well - over there it's a run of the mill curry house, in Sheffield I'd kill for something like that this side of the city. As it is we've a couple on Eccy road that manage to make curry bland, quite an acheivement really...
Will have to follow up the Curry Canteen, we poked our noses into Aagra but it looked a bit too posh.
most takeaway curry is rubbish regardless of where it comes from , if you get irendly with the chefs / owners of curry houses they will let you have 'staff curry' i.e. actual real subcontiental food ...
nefertari 23-08-2008, 16:25 Used to go to Mangla all the time years ago but I think it's gone way down hill to what it was. It was certainly better before they tarted it up in IMO
I guess this thread should be in the 'going out' or 'eating out in Sheffield' threads. Oh well
for what its worth, check this out, its our 'Currylovers' website, only just revamped so not uploaded with many reviews etc yet

Our favourite restaurants in the South Yorks area are:
Flouch Balti House, Penistone (our Restaurant of the Year 2006)
Jinnah, Chapeltown
Aagrah, Leopold Square
Ackbar's Rotherham
Royal Spice, Darton, (our Restaurant of the Year 2007)
Saffron Club Sheffield
Nirmals, Sheffield
also recommended;
the Balti, Matlock Bath
The Kashmir, Sheffield
In terms of 'Indian' curry, Nirmals is your best best, restaurants vary greatly in ownership, front of house staff and, most importantly the kitchen, although I am led to believe that Bangladeshi chefs are the mainstay of 'Indian' restaurants.
whatever, without them where would we be eh?
I also love Kebabs, both Middle Eastern and Mediterranean, and would be interested to hear people's favourite, mine so far are Kebabish in London Road and Woodseats Kebab House, in, er, Woodseats
nefertari 23-08-2008, 19:20 Nirmals same as Mangla in so far that it used to be good years ago then went so far down hill and very overpriced IMO
Try Akbars at Rotherham on meadowbank road 2 mins from meadowhall i've been once or twice it's really nice.... lovelly setting ideal for families too. There's also another big place further down the road called 'apna' nice food there too and nice interior, aswell as being far cheaper than akbars.

Ummm Bradford city eh...someone once asked what is the differance between a bradford city goalie and a taxi driver?
Taxi driver only lets in 4 at a time !
SYorksDeano 26-08-2008, 18:45 . There's one in Keighley which I go to fairly regular and it is lovely - it's run by the cousin of the bloke who runs the Balti King in Broomhall
Shamila Spice is the one I think you are on about in Keighley. They have one in Shipley as well (Just between Bradford and Keighley)

That's the one! Their fish pakoras are right nice, and due to slight inebriation preventing me from eating the curry on the night on my last visit, I can assure you that it's still top quality served cold for breakfast :hihi:

They certainly are not tight on their portions either and the food is always top quality. I've not tried the Shipley on yet, but I assume it will be up to the same grade. As for this one in Broomhall, going to have to try that one

mralchemy 17-10-2011, 19:07 I was in Bradford last week and had a curry at the legendary karachi , Neale street
£6.00 main course with chappatis, starters around £1.50
best place I have ever eaten a cheap curry :-) - with amazing ramshackle atmosphere and dodgy toilets.
best posh curry is zouk cafe bar in bradford - wonderful - tandooried liver and fresh fruit smoothies + the lightest wafer thin nans and superb pickle tray
Ive yet to have a great curry in Sheffield, the Bombay Spice takeaway on Woodseats is pretty good......
