I came in to work having been off for 2 days to find the council have cut the trees down from the side of the city hall, apparently they are going to stick some fountains there instead. The Joy! we had nice healthy trees, free, look good, a bit of green in the city centre, they cut them down to make way for more expensive fountains.. It seems to help pay for this they have increased the parking charges in the centre to £1.30 / hour. Another great plan by the council Muppets.. GGGGrrrrrrrrrrrr

For once I'd like to say the council is doing something useful!

Perfectly good reason for replacing the trees - not sure about the "public art features in glass and acrylic" though.

This council have some weird ideas about art.

Because the roots were making the path wonky and they don't want to be sued perhaps ;)

They were doing it on Sunday when i went into town, was bad for parking.

I also wondered why they were doing it, seems stupid.

The mad idea was planting trees in front of the City Hall in the first place - after all thiose whips were always going to grow up into big boys.

I'm looking forward to seeing the finished results - it looks like it should be great.

were they planted in front of the town hall or were the trees there first?

I'm not saying they were I just have not been there for a long time and cannot remember their size.

From memory, the trees are quite new - maybe 10 - 15 years old - planted in the last refurb along with those funny round planters.

I remember doing some sketching whilst sitting on the city hall steps sometime around '87, and they weren't there then - they would have blocked the view!

I am on a comittee at the "town hall" which looks at these sort of plans and redevelopments.

We have been privy to the plans for the refurb of the Barkers Pool/ City Hall area.

The trees which were originally planted were inappropriate for the area, and so, "had to go". Something about the size and type of tree.

They will be replaced, with more appropriate planting, and yes, there will be a couple of water features.

I am not over keen on the idea of the pop-up urinak, for night-use, but I suppose it'll be better than having all the idiots P'ing in doorways and entries!

It seems the trees wouldn't have had to be cut down if the planners had chosen the right trees in the first place.

If the public toilets had been replaced earlier instead of closing them down the 'idiots' of Sheffield as you call them would not have to pee in public places.

It seems the Sheffield council is intent on wasting money by not getting their priorities right, image seems to be the priority not the needs of the public.
