View Full Version : Mad Motorway Drivingness

Okay, so it's 2 years since I did at least 1K a week of weekday motorway driving and times change. I didn't think me and my 160mph Jag were slouches but I've driven back from York this evening and been utterly gobsmacked at the amount of traffic for a Sunday and also the speed some people were doing.

I ended up in the inside lane doing 70-80, was having trouble getting into the middle lane to overtake and was even 'undertaken' on the A1/M1 bit via the hard shoulder when the two outside lanes were busy with drivers going a hell of a lot faster than me.

Have I missed some kind of free for all being announced on Yorkshire speed limits or what?

Sunday afternoon/evening is second only to Friday for volumes: particularly when the weather has encouraged people to visit the Moors/Dales/Coast.

That bit-A1/M1- is particularly iffy as people don't like to find themselves being undertaken by the A1- bound traffic.

And basically: it's a boring 10 miles of motorway before you get anywhere at all and they like to burn it off quick.:)

FFR: there's often a bunch of speed traps around there, so don't take anything for granted.

And Sunday is the day when people who never normally drive on a motorway go for a drive on the motorway. I use the M1 daily, and see a big difference in the standard of driving at weekends than during the week. Monday - Friday yes its busy but most people follow the rules. Sundays out come the Founder Members of the Middle Lane Owners Club who are not allowed to travel at more than 58 mph and who know that the inside lane is only to be used briefly as a means of getting on and off at the slip road. :loopy:

Ugh yeah! I HATE that! I was on the M1 on a sunday a couple of weeks ago and it was full of middle lane drivers of the worst kind...
It was so busy, and middle lane drivers (and the sheep that follow them) had pretty much reduced the M1 to 2 lanes. There was a couple of women in an MG in the middle lane, doing 65mph and naff all in the left lane, so I flashed her briefly so I wouldn't have to either sit behind her for miles, or feel the urge to undertake (yes I know it's naughty). Bearing in mind, there was nothing directly in front of her, and the right hand lane was rammed.

Her & her mate gave me so much abuse and I've never seen women use so many gestures! :loopy: I must admit, it was quite funny, but she obviously thought she was in the right to just sit in the middle lane! :hihi:

I just find it unbelievable that people still do this, as it reduces the traffic into 2 lanes.

Must have been the day for it, I came down the M18 yesterday afternoon, there were a couple of middle-lane hoggers doing 70mph with an empty inside lane, so the outside lane was full of traffic trying to get past them, and then a couple of impatient arses doing 90mph insisted on undertaking everyone and then swerving into traffic wherever they could

I probably should've been clearer that the middle and outside lanes were like a Grand Prix rather than the Sunday drivers you'd normally expect. Seeing drivers tailgating at round about 100mph scared the carp out of me! :o

In what sense where they hogging the middle lane at 70 mph, the speed limit?

Because as Brunette said the inside lane was empty?
People who do not use proper lane discipline totally undermine the principle of motorways. Raahh.

In that case, I fail to see what the problem was?

Exactly what I said in my original post - that there seemed to be some kind of free for all and disregard for the speed limit - it felt dangerous!
