In Southport, my son overheard 2 foreign visitors saying what a rotten time they"d had on a night out in Sheffield. They didn"t like the drunken behavior and vomiting in the streets that they saw,so they went home and had a miserable time there instead! Son butted in: "Hey Watch what your saying about Sheffield,I"m from there!" The look on their faces was a picture!

is there something wrong with critisising drunken & vomiting behaviour? Are we supposed to feel proud of it?

The point is the majority people from Sheffield do not drink to excess.

i did that, in arabic, once.

Some Arab lads at the college I went to, who always hung about on one of the corridors, blocking it, would always call after the English people, insulting them. They thought it was a great joke as the "goras" didn't know what was being said.

One day they shouted after me, not realising I had learnt a bit of the language. I knew what they said,

So I turned round on them, and told them exactly what I thought of them in their language....

And, like those lads, in your incident, sazk, their faces were a picture, too.

The collective "thud" of eight or ten jaws, hitting the flooor, simultaneously was about a 4.5 on the richter scale! lol lol lol.

They took me seriously, after that!

I know, but if that's what they saw, that's what they saw.

But I live in Sheffield and struggle to find a civilised night out in town

Even if you try to do a restaurant-theatre-drinks afterwards night, you have to share the streets with animals :(

Anyway, to get back on topic....

I was working in a project team with many dutch and belgian colleagues. The language on the project was flemmish

a bunch of americans arrived, and it was very easy to tell that they were the subject of derisory flemmish conversation (long story, but I was inclined to agree)

I have 'betting shop ears' - I can listen to two things at once, processing background chatter without thinking about it

an engineer came in asking about one particular part of the plant and it's problems, and without thinking I answered - 'Adrian was working on that about 20 mins ago, ask him'

Cue about 10 shocked faces :D Cue the dawning realisation I may have been able to understand everything they'd said in Flemmish for the past six weeks :D

They'd forgotten that Flemmish has adopted english labels for most of the engineering plant, so it was easy enough to follow that bit, tone filling in the blanks :hihi:
